I’m in my second season of training my snowball viburnum. This was so helpful! As soon as I finished the video I went back outside and made a few more cuts to mine!
Jim, you have so much good content. It would be great for an editor to piece together multiple videos to see the process over time in one video. For example, all of your hydrangea tree form videos. Or, for your plant specific videos, how they look in spring/summer/fall/winter.
Okay ~ I just re-watched this video... crying because I will need to go back to my tree and cut the way you did. It has to be done since I am trying to make my Snowball into a tree for the space it is in. It sure does seem brutal but it MUST be done. You are an excellent teacher but I must follow the teacher for the same success I am trying to achieve.
Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciated this video. I bought the hydrangea with this idea in mind. Granted, mine's only 2 feet tall. BUT she'll get there! Thanks again. I look forward to seeing more of your creative endeavors.
These pruning videos are so helpful. Second year in the ground for my native fringe & serviceberry trees and they have exploded with new growth this spring. I’m keeping a multi trunk form with both but now I know where to focus my pruning. Thank you!
Hey Jim, I have one that I did that way but the flower heads get so heavy that the stems hang almost to the ground after Summer rains, how can I stop that from happening? Mine is Limelight
Thank you for the tree forming video. I want to tree form a panicle hydrangea. It’s already single trunk with three branches. I just hope it gets some more height on it.
Jim, thank you! Do you have a video of making a shrub like the ones you showed into multi trunked small trees while they are still young? I’ve seen the Lilac video but hoping to find a video for a shrub/bush to multi trunk small tree starting off in a three gallon pot. Plant is snowball viburnum.
Second the motion. I have an Amelanchier alnifolia that I want to train into a small multi trunk to keep in a container. The container I have it in is about 3 gallons. I planted it in there from a one gallon nursery pot last spring but I haven't started training it yet.
Great video! I have wanted a snowball viburnum for a while and decided where I was going to put it and wanted to tree form it so this video was perfect! Thanks!
When the branches are so thin and weak, would you consider removing the flower buds for the first few years, to avoid the branches breaking when rains soak the big flowers.
Love watching these and the topiary. Definitely something to try as I gain more confidence in my gardening skills. Love the explanations along with the visuals.
I just planted a Temple of Bloom Heptacodium that will be tree forming into a multi trunk so this video came handy. I also have young viburnums and hydrangeas that I can do this too as well but I need to make sure that I don't end up turning every shrub into trees 😁
I have been wanting to ensure my newly planted cornus florida stays single trunk tree form. Its only 6 ft tall. I figure let it grow more then prune. I dont know. I see alot of multi trunk dogwoods here. I am in control you say, but i sure have given several shrubs some pretty bad "hair cuts". Thanks for the video, will save to try your method. Need to tree form my eastern snowball viburnam.
Hi Jim, can you only limb up fairly young shrubs, especially from the bottom? I have a Chinese snowball that is a few years old. It’s quite big, but I’d love to under plant it. Thank you so much for the detailed explanation as to why you are cutting it the way that you are!
Hi Jim, is it advised to do this with an older hydrangea? I have a phantom that I planted maybe 4-6 years ago so it has some good height but obviously thicker stems/trunks at the bottom.
Hi y’all! I would love an update on the small Japanese Maple that you wired up to make curves up the trunk (the video I believe is few months old & you shot it in your screened porch) Thank you! 🪴🌳
I’m in the Netherlands and started tree-forming a paniculata, inspired by your earlier videos. I pruned some dead wood at the top of the main stem and as expected it branched into 3. However I would like to raise the main stem a little more, from about 2 feet to 3 feet. To achieve this, should I stake one of the 3 outward branches and make it a part of the main stem?
I’ve started doing this as well on several shrubs. I also have a serviceberry that has an awkward shape. How much can I remove to help it grow straighter?

this was encouraging to see you are following Jim also. Thanks

Thank you Jim and Stephany. 🌷💚🙃
Love it! Next to the fertilizer slinging, the pruning of the tree form hydrangea is a video I look forward to each year. It’s looking great!
Just the encouragement I needed to tackle a young smoke bush!
Very nice! Thanks!! Also, congratulations on 200K subscribers. 🎉😊
Working with nature is a win-win situation! 👍

I want to do this to a desert willow, hopefully it will turn out. Thanks!🌸

Jim, please show us these lovely "trees" later this summer. So fun to watch!
Thank you for the info! Linda Vater talked about this video in her video a couple of days ago! Love your channel Jim!
The art of pruning beautifies the garden. Jim, do be careful when you say you are in complete control. Mother Nature has her own plans.

Is it possible to do this with a older (15 years old) snowball?
This was so helpful. T takes some bravery to wrangle a tree form shrub. I’ve got a tree form miss figgy that has been bossing me around. No more!
Excellent video. I really want a Snowball Tree. Please keep us posted
Awesome way to teach us how to control and promote growth pattern on hydrangea! Mine are wonderfully shaped after learning this from HortTube 🪴🪴🪴
Great video! But unfortunately I will not sleep until I get one of those 3 pole stakes that you used on the second plant.
Please let me know if you find one!
It's a type of tomato cage.

You simplified treee forming thank you . I am going out and check mine im training. Thanks

Any idea on where to find that type of stake?

So helpful!
Hi, Jim! So do you recommend we get our specimens to grow about 4 or 5 feet before we start shaping into tree form? Thank you!
Yes, I’m curious wha’s the rec size before you begin taking the bottom branches off?
What does the snowball look like this year?

Jim, those clipping that you cut off-could they have been rooted?
What type of tripod stake did you use for the snowball viburnum?

Woohoo congrats on 200K followers! Even though 199,999 is just as important, something nice about those round numbers. 🎉
I’ve started doing this as well on several shrubs. I also have a serviceberry that has an awkward shape. How much can I remove to help it grow straighter?
Can you please do a video on how to take care of a lilac bush?
I am also training a viburnum into tree form but I haven't done any pruning - the deer have been doing it for me. ☹
Thanks for this. What is that stake called? It looks useful for a lot of things.
Would ivy grow on that chain link fence?
Have you heard of putting cinnamon on the large cut you sawed off? Wondering if it helps to cure.
Love your channel…….any training tips to get the deer to prune my hydrangeas?🤣
In bonsai and niwaki (Japanese garden tree) and in Japan, they prune to 2 (bifurcation).
Mind tree is 5 yrs old. But it want grow.
667th like 👀😁👍
