Neil Shicoff sings "La fleur que tu m'avais jetée" (the flower song) from Bizet's "Carmen." This is from a live performance of the opera with Emily Golden and Lucia Mazzaria in Chicago on December 15, 1990 with Eduardo Mata conducting. Shicoff is fantastic here!
Many thanks to my friend for this recording!

People talk about his acting ability, and yes sure he was a great actor. But to my ears he had one of the most beautiful tenor voices of all time. Listen to those blossoming overtones every time he opens his mouth. And it was a good sized lyrico spinto with ample ring and projection. His legato line was impeccable, and the rich vocal quality was equal throughout his range.

@@redgrapeskins It was sensational, I was there almost every night he sang, but missed once--even better then it sounds here!

The free and open throat produces wonderfully bright and brilliant tones, often at the cost of more precise pronunciation, but who can argue with such beautiful singing?!

After listening to this many times, I finally bought the entire opera. Even so, I still come back to this, rather than going in to put the whole thing in my stereo--Thank you for this posting!

Thank you for posting Shicoff in this role and live--very impressive; a remarkable singer who is still a very effective interpreter.

I remember Troyanos being out long before the Carmens started. When I had run into Neil in the fall of 89, Troyanos was already out due to illness and I believe that Emily Golden was already cast. I went to Chicago for one of these Carmens (and it was fab), got to hang out in his dressing room and he invited me to the Flute dress the next day before I went back to NY. He then cancelled his Met Toscas and didn't sing in the NY again until the 97 Onegins. Boy I miss him!

this aria is so elegantly done here, I love Jose Carriaris' version, but this is so dear to heart! Deeply touching, how solid and honest the artistry of Neil Schicoff! No push or extra twists, Bravo!

I believe this is the correct spelling "Carreras" He was Magnificent in his best years, I saw him early singing in Tosca, in 1974, wonderful voice and I only really judge singers I saw in house, as for being most accurate. Some sound much better and some not at all better in the house.

@@道-p2e I attended and taped basically the same concert program selections he sang with Terfel in August 1998, but at the Hollywood Bowl Calif. in a concert, that I flew into LA for, but also my sound quality was perhaps not even as good as this, the Bow also is Outside and really huge, but I remember a great version of the Pearl Fishers duet they sang that was a great success of the evening, it was really sensational, and in fact this Tosca aria was Neil's first selection and he was in wonderful voice all night. Thank you for mentioning this one.

Dawn was making her Lyric debut and the patron's dress was the day after the Carmen. It was so much fun to sit with him with our feet hanging over the seats in front and his reading the surtitles too. Jerry Hadley was Tamino. I don't remember the rest of the cast. I hopped on the train back to NY after the rehearsal. A lifetime ago . . .

@@shicoff1398 I cannot even see the video, let alone live Carmen by Neil.
Do not like Domingo's film version, this is a great role for Tucker and Neil S.
I love the video posting of Mario Del Monaco's carmen final scene...so mad. I also read some writings of female partner "complained", scared of his eyes, they thought he was going to kill in real time...
Met's new production of carmen is horrible, they still used Robert Alagna's cracking voice, and pretentious acting. I saw him live at 2006, dried voice already back then. I was lucky to see the old Met Carmen production, gorgeous, that was 20 years ago. The leading soprano was sick, the famous american black carmen, but the tenor was fantastic, I love his voice, Argentinian MARCELO ÁLVAREZ.
Acting and singing, Neil Shicoff was way ahead of those current stars on Met stage.

He was one of the last to realize that opera is an excessive art form - big throbbing sounds and extroverted dramatics. (Also the last tenor to my knowledge that had a tone very particular to the Central European cantorial tradition of his father.)
