One sharp rap with a hammer and the grease jacks the bearing or sleeve out. That might be a faster way than using a dremel to cut through the sleeve. Thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge!

Squatch I have been thinking a lot about your remarks regarding scarcity and even irreplaceability for so many of the parts on those old machines.
It occurs to me that since SpaceX builds virtually entire rocket engines from exotic alloys that way even the bigger castings that comprise and old tractor or whatever can probably now be replicated by 3D printing.
At least one startup called Relativity Space is developing 3D printing technology which is approaching the ability to create an entire reusable rocket the same way.
Equally important is that the technology will undoubtedly not only enable reproduction of currently unattainable parts like gears, cylinder blocks, camshafts, heads and so forth but it could be achieved more cost-effectively than ever before.
Combined with NC machining I don't see why virtually any part you could possibly encounter a need for could not be replicated cost effectively by modern methods including relatively complex castings.
What are your thoughts in that regard?

i see an issue that was back in episode 13 at 17:12 there is a bearing spacer missing. that may or may NOT have been in the parts manual.. its easy to miss. it goes between the Outer race of the forward bearing and the inside of the seal retainer to lock the outer race in place and stop it from spinning. removing excessive end play from the splined counter shaft that caused the probable kicking out the PTO randomly as the countershaft and front bearing slid forward.. you might be able to measure without tearing the countershaft out.. how much end play there is... so youc can machine a spacer ring to pinch the outer race tight into the bearing holder 4B3424 this removes all the end to end slop in the countershaft thermal expansion can be handled by the roller bearing on the rear. this might require some shimming or different thickness gaskets for between the bearing support and the seal support to hold the bearing OD tight in the housing.

It is hard to think of a reason that fork was so messed up. The ONLY 2 reasons I can think of (I used to work on cars a bit, but never touched anything like that...) is...
    1. that the detent spring broke a long time ago or the detent gummed up and stopped working. So to make sure the PTO stayed in the right position they strapped the level with bungy. The detent did not stop the fork from pressing on the coupling all the time and wore it out. They then serviced it, fixing the detent, and to make up for the wear on the fork they added the washer... and that chewed up the input shaft. I am kind of surprised there is no form of throughout bearing on that coupling either (like a clutch on a car has).
    2. I would think there should be something to make sure that coupling does not move on its own, like a spring behind the coupling to keep it engaged 100%. When it is disengaged by the level the detent just needs to hold the spring back and it should not need a lot of pressure to keep it engaged do to the square coupling teeth. The coupling might have drifted so it was riding against the fork and causing the wear.

@@squatch253 Thanks for the reply. Yes could definitely see the dogs coming in contact at times, as that clearance would have been reduced, both by the washer and the extra play in the fork. Not a good idea on their part putting the washer in there to keep the dogs engaged, without adjusting for the reduced clearance. I would think there must be something that limits that free float otherwise it could just float right back into the PTO input, or am I missing something. BTW the PTO on my D2 when disengaged still rotates, varying speeds, but can be stopped by hand. Likely due to oil between the shafts causing friction.
Really appreciate all your hard work, on all these videos. Excellent work. Has helped me understand and adjust my D2. One can read all the books in the world on D2's, and not get the information one can get from one of your videos.
Not uncommon for me to order parts from the US, and have to wait a week or 2 to get the parts. Unfortunate the machine shop is not getting to your pony motors. The spacer washer if needed should go between the pto shaft and the coupler not the live feed shaft and coupler! If you fix the play in the fork , moving the dog into the coupler is correct but moving the coupler closer the the pto will take away the disengagement clearance. Also the shimming spacer should be brass! Because that is the rotational wear and thrust is. So you will just re-mare up the pto shaft and coupler, if put bushing shim at live feed shaft!

    • @KG-yn9qi
      @KG-yn9qi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@squatch253 All of that is what I took in consideration. Who ever put the spacer between the counter shaft and coupler, pushed the coupler back into the input shaft. The rotation with disengagement between coupler and input is what marked up the end of the shaft and the inside face of coupler. Also I was taking in that in repairing, fork ware, and moving the engagement dog forward. With moving the coupler backwards. You will lose the safe disengagement space, between coupler and engagement sleeve dog. If have an oil feed hole that will be blocked by spacer. Then can drill or cut grove/hole ( like in water thermostats spacer) that will still allow flow. Also if spacer is put at counter shaft what will hold the coupler up tight to the shaft ,not to let it drift back against input shaft? Maybe when make the new bushing cut it longer so will stand proud and contact the input shaft at the spline shoulder? To hold coupler forward and allow disengagement spacing. Was just thinking. Know you can make the proper repair, just old man putting too much thought, into some one else business. But that kind of problem solving (what, why and how to fix it) thinking is part of what I have done all my life! Hard to stop doing it!

Do I remember correctly only two of the three starting motors make their way to the shop. That means one of the “tri-build blocks remains with Squatch. I wonder what is in store for the next component for rebuilding.

Ah, I bet those salesmen are more like, "We finally get to clear out some more old stock that's just cluttering up the shelves". I've actually worked at a hose/gasket company where each square of shelf space had a price. If some part wasn't selling, it got chunked after a couple years and some part that would make us money filled its spot.

Be prepared to find that wear on the dogs will be trying to push the engagement out against the repaired fork. I am tempted to suspect that was why all those other problems had been created. This will only happen under heavy load and will be hidden from view.

Since you need to make a spacer to tighten up end clearance on the coupler could you put the spacer in the bore under the bushing. The bushing would keep the spacer tight so it couldn't move and create any excessive wear.

I thought the same as Tom. You have built up the fork to move the collar towards the shaft and if you put the washer at the other end you are moving the shaft towards the collar. Could this cause clearance issues.

That shift fork looks to be about a quarter inch thick. With the age of that steel and how much work its seen in its life, do you think the weld might have weakened the steel? It doesn't look to be a hardened piece? I know thos machine isn't going to see the life that it once did, but do you think that fork could be weak enough to break?

Squatch, since the engine has been sitting for months since you built it, ¿will there be issues of surface rust on the cylinders or even gunk on the injection pump?, or everything just has a coat of light oil waiting for the final fluids?
