Usually when schools transition to new conferences, their uniforms change. That won't be the case with SC. That would CRUSH the b1gs playoff hopes, I think. 😂
Edit: that is why the SEC wont do it without more money. Just more injuries, more chances to get upset. The more games you play, the more talent that is healthy becomes a problem. It'll kill cinderella teams' hopes.
Idk, it sounds good on paper...and if every other league did it, sure. But as a UT fan, while I really liked round robin scheduling...it really caused us to eat each other up when the b12 was good.

As someone else said Oregon and Washington have in state rivals outside the conference. Iowa too with Iowa State. No other league will go for it either. Florida State and Florida and Miami wont all end up in the same league. Florida State is going to play Florida and Miami every year. Making it sound like the B10 did this for OR &WA out of goodwill is deceptive. The B10 saw a fire sale and knew they has OR & WA over a barrel to accept less money. The B10 schools are getting more money, or they would not have voted for these additions. If they felt goodwill they would have taken Stanford & Cal too. It was all about money, with logistics being a bonus.

Not necessarily, footprint matters too, and leads to more money in the future. As well as competition.
I don't think the SEC will expand, except for a few schools. Notre Dame, FSU, perhaps Clemson...that's about it.
Splitting money more ways isn't the greatest thing. But having a large footprint on the west coast is good for advertising. Idk, we will see how it works out.

It's gonna be weird to not see Cal, Stanford, Wazzu, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Arizona State, etc on our schedule anymore, but I'm sure we'll have plenty of good games against B1G teams in the coming years.
Curious to see how football scheduling is worked out, but I think the four the west coast teams should all play each other annually to help cut down on travel. It'd guarantee one or two shorter road trips for all four programs every year in addition to reducing the number of times existing B1G teams will have to travel across the country. Plus we're all familiar foes to one another, and I'd argue matchups between Oregon/Washington/USC/UCLA are pretty much always highly anticipated games that draw big crowds and solid TV ratings.
Looking forward to meeting fans of existing B1G teams and welcoming them to Autzen! I'm certain it'll be a sold-out madhouse when the big dogs come to visit, but hopefully attendance and ratings will be solid for the medium and small B1G teams as well.

Winner with automatic bid to play for a chance of national championship. If they can get the other conferences to fall in line with same format that would be awesome. Remains to be seen if there are 3 conferences or 4, but my gut says by 2025 will be just be the big 12, Big 10, and the SEC. 20 to 24 teams per conference. You fill in the remaining spots for the playoffs for the natty with remaining highest ranked teams. Basing off record and strength of schedule. Welcome to the big 10 from THE Ohio State fan base. Bring in Cal and Stanford to the Big10.
Big10 would have 4, five team divisions. And a 4 team "playoff" to determine the champion.
North Division: Washington, Oregon, Stanford, Minnesota, Wisconsin.
South Division: UCLA, USC, CAL, Nebraska, Iowa
Central Division: Northwestern, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Michigan St.
East Division: Michigan, Ohio St, Penn St, Maryland, Rutgers
8 game Conference schedule. This gives each team 4 Division games, and 1 game against each other Division. 1 permanent cross Division rivalry for each team to maintain rivalries.
Conference game 9 match ups are determined based on divisional standings (North v South and Central v East) with the top teams from each division matching up to determine who plays in the championship game.
This balances out travel issues as every school would have at least one long trip.
Also because game 9 will be determined based on divisional standings, you will get a balanced and competitive final game.
For other sports, like basketball, you play everyone once, and your natural rival twice.
    20 is the magic number.

There's a super convenient way to schedule an 18-team football league:
Ten games make up the conference season for each team. Each team gets three protected rivalries, who they play every year. Each team plays the remaining 14 teams every other year. This allows each team two non-conference games per year, three geographic or historical rivalry games per year, AND allows players the chance to potentially play against each B1G opponent home and away at least once over the course of 4 years.

But to try to preserve anything nostalgic/traditional in this environment is pointless. That ain't what it's about anymore. I wonder how this will impact the 2024 schedule, which was already released. They will obviously scrap that now. How many "locks" does each team get now (it was going to be 3)? And what will they be?

    • @bmlong137
      @bmlong137 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The math before was 3 locks + 6 rotaters + 3 OOC = 12 games each season; that gave every team a game against every team every 2 years.
Now it might be 3 locks + 7 rotaters + 2 OOC = 12 games each season with similar results
Or do you go with 5 locks + 4 rotaters + 3 OOC = 12 games; play every team every 3 years?

@@bmlong137Going to a 10 game conference schedule essentially eliminates any marquee non-conference matchups. If a school does a home-and-home series for a non-conference matchup with 10 conference games, that will mean that one of those two years they will only have 6 home games instead of their typical 7. Iowa specifically will resist this change because they have a priority of maintaining a 7 home game schedule every year and they also want to keep the annual Iowa State rivalry. The same could be true for Oregon-Oregon State and Washington-Washington State now.
Especially for the schools in the smaller college towns (ie Iowa City, Eugene) losing that 7th home game every other year would have a significant impact on the local economy of the city. Many small businesses make a lot their annual revenue during those 7 weekends each fall.

Think about recruiting too. Years ago my nephews were on a San Diego HS football team that had a top tier recruit, and he was looking at some Big 10 schools, but in the end, he didn't like the idea that if he came here, none of his friends and family were likely to ever be able to come to any of his games. Now, a kid from the west coast who comes to the Midwest can be sure of at least some games out there every year.

They won't be now - that's why adding these schools will help. I doubt that these western schools will get sent to Rutgers or Maryland often, but the flight to the Midwest is not much farther than a lot of the flights within the PAC 12. For example the flight from USC to Washington is only about 1 1/2 to 2 hours shorter than the flight to Michigan State.

Sure they can - these schools charter jets, they don't fly commercial. There are no direct flights from Lansing, MI to any Big 10 towns except Minneapolis and Chicago, but there are airports in all of them.
I actually got to fly on the team plane (basketball) once because my wife's uncle was a friend and assistant of Tom Izzo. When some booster had to cancel last minute, Gary asked if he could invite my wife and I to come on the trip to Penn State and then I got a call saying that if we could be at the airport within an hour, we could make the trip. I forget the airport we landed at but it wasn't too far from campus, and my wife and I got the full booster treatment.

It’s really silly when every analyst says that long travel is being “alleviated” by adding two more west coast schools. You can’t play a team (depending on the sport) more twice in a season. Also, it’s not a short flight from LA to Seattle. It’s 2 1/2 hours. I think the reality is that non revenue producing sports are going to have a rude awakening in the future. As a further example Michigan plays W soccer at USC and Pepperdine this year. Last year W tennis played at Tempe, Seattle, San Francisco and Berkeley. M tennis played at Tempe, San Diego twice, Seattle, and LaJolla and USC traveled to Ann Arbor twice . The point is that travel to the west coast is nothing new for most Big 10 teams. Granted in the past the west coast teams traveling to the Midwest wasn't nearly as common.
