- NATHAN CHASING HORSE (Nathan Lee Chasinghishorse) Speaks at the 2013 Avi Kwa Ame - Fort Mojave Nation Pow Wow in Bullhead City, AZ. Nathan discusses the meaning and use of the Eagle Bone Whistle, the responsibilities of the Whistle Carrier, and how his own mother was cured of throat cancer.

Short answer: I hope to begin again in 2023 in Oklahoma.
I left the Calif Powwow Circuit, where I had places to stay when filming, people knew me. Then Covid came along, that was a game changer for me.
I miss it all, even standing on my feet all weekend filming LOL
driving 12 hours solo, etc.
I don't miss the GON security Harassment haha. Small powwows were funner, people were always more relaxed.
I love all the songs, all the styles.

It was a Tribal Executive Board, not a tribal court. And it was their Education Committee, so he could not claim religious discrimination.
Basically, they were saying that he could not have "meetings" on tribal land where he was the instructor.
FPS had sex abuse cases before, by their medicine men. They got locked up.
BIA has criminal investigators there... I want to know if anybody contacted them directly. The one female FPS Tribal Board member says "The Feds dropped the ball".

@@fernandotrujillo7683 Yes, I've smelled his pachouli "medicine" at powwows when I was filming and we wound up near each other. But, ten years of filming, and not 1 word between us, I never chase after people.
My documentary style was just get the footage, let the viewers have it ( I avoided whistles, private moments, some prayers, etc).
Since this is an active criminal prosecution, I also want to prevent anything posted here from being used as a reason that Due Process rights were denied, I am using caution.
When Deb Haaland was appointed Secretary of Dept of Interior, I wondered if scrutiny of BIA cases would happen.
Deb used to attend powwows on Navajo Rez when she lived in Holbrook, I think.
I'm no stranger to this problem, had both a long career where I interacted with perpetrators, their victims, and courts.
Many cases I can never comment on, but some came out in the press, such as a hostage case where traffickers from Mexico were holding Central American Mayan women who mostly spoke their K'iche or Itzah" Native tongue.
Traffickers were trying to extort a higher smuggling fee from the family inside USA, and beating the women while on cellphone, so they could hear their screams. They threatened to rape the women if the money did not show up.
Teaming with local Sheriff, we located the stash house, rescued the women, arrested the crooks.
As much as we wanted public awareness, this press story also made the other bad guys change their game plans.
I've seen the numbers of arrests, and known victims inside certain systems. Which only means there is much more out there.
Sheriff Grady Judd of Polk County, Florida on TH-cam does Sting Operations where he arrests dozens of the creeps trying to hook up with kids, teens, etc. Does Polk county rep the whole USA? Uggh.
I've personally known victims, still affected by abuse decades ago. Then, it makes me wonder how many perpetrators are reliving their own abuse (no excuse).

Yep...I've seen this dude take money from elders for ceremony. He tells people bad things will happen to them if they don't pay him or if they leave his circle. I know a lot of people who have told this dude to hit the bricks for doing all sorts of disrespectful stuff to their families and friends.

Quite a few years ago in Las Vegas...I'm not sure if there was a pow wow at this particular casino that Mr. Chasing His Horse was at but he was surrounded by a couple of traditional dancers.
When I came around the corner, I knew who he was. Then for some reason.. I had look right into his eyes but as soon as he made eye contact he just kept looking down at the ground. I get this a lot from people as if saying that they're not an honest person or they're up to 😒 hmmm

Fort Peck Sioux Tribal Executive Board's members voted 7 to 0, with two abstentions, to pass the Education Committee’s motion to ban actor and Lakota “spiritual leader” Nathan Chasing Horse from the Fort Peck Reservation.
Before the board voted, Councilwoman Firemoon asked Chairman A.T. Stafne to recognize the Chasing Horse supporters. Chairman Stafne said he would only recognize one, because it was a meeting of elected officials and the supporters had never come into a committee to voice their opinions.
The group elected to have Fort Kipp elder Jackie Perry speak on their behalf for Nathan.
Perry said she has known Chasing Horse for 15 years and during that time there was nothing but love shown from him toward her family. He taught them to pray and love and he never charged for ceremonies, she said. Perry said she didn’t know who was saying these things about him but they weren’t true and Chasing Horse would never hurt anyone.
**Lilda Christian, another supporter of Chasing Horse, said they were forced to seek out the actor because there are no legitimate medicine men around the reservation, and the local ones have served time in prison for sex crimes.
“The federal government fell asleep on this but I’m not,” Roxanne Gourneau said before the vote. “Will I protect our people from that? In a heartbeat,” Gourneau said.

No "charges" have been filed.
Certain members of the Fort Peck Sioux Tribal Executive Board claim they "heard" things.
The TEB is not Tribal Court, but they do have banishment power.
So, TEB members feel in interest of "safety", they moved the motion against N.C.H.
The TEB cannot be sued, even for federal civil rights violations of religious persecution!
N.C.H. cannot get a hearing, cannot question accusers, cannot see if there is evidence. How is this Native justice?
A Native woman was allowed to testify for N.C.H. at the TEB meeting. She spoke positively.
In the past, there have been local "medicine men" locked up for sexual abuse, after criminal court.
It makes more questions, but no real answers the way TEB did this.

I walked with him on the Walk Across American for Mother Earth 1992 to protest 500 years of genocide. I also walked for Leonard Peltier. Nathan Chasing Horse gave me his staff and he told me that the Lakota spirit would always be with me. He was very kind and loving and amazing. I will never forget him.

It's a big rodeo arena, the powwow is up in the front end.
So, nobody sat at far end.
The years I filmed there, this powwow only filled-up one time.
It was south of Laughlin, Nevada, kind of remote area.
It was in February, then they moved the dates around.
Too cold at night to camp, and the AVI Casino next door wasn't big enough.
The Mojave Crossing Events Center charged admission on Everybody, which many dancers did not like.
And vendors weren't doing too well there, hard to get them to come back. It's still going, now in January, but I haven't filmed there in many years now.
