Il Volo - Soaring into their second decade

- Just like other performers, the Italian group Il Volo has to postpone their concerts while the world aims for more control over COVID-19. The young trio was originally going to perform shows in Europe this month, but those shows are now rescheduled for late 2021. The bel canto singers are excited to connect with their audiences once again, performing Italian classics and original material with their powerful operatic voices.
Spotlight producer Paul Larson invites us back to a simpler time, when "social distancing" was not a common term. His second interview with Il Volo happened on January 30, 2020, backstage at Place Bell in Laval, Quebec. No one was talking about postponing shows back then. No one was wearing a mask. Larson and the Italian lads sat less than six feet apart and chatted about their 10 year career, and their sixth PBS special, shot in beautiful Matera Italy.

The interview with Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca was primo. I love that Piero is wearing a CANADA hoodie, and enjoyed the interview with all 3 members of IL VOLO. They are humble even with all the fame they have achieved over the past 12 years. They are truly a class act … 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼.

I am a very proud Italian/American woman (61 years "young"), who grew up listening to Italian music. Especially on Sundays when the whole extended family came to my house to have Sunday dinner (at 1PM). My late dad would have loved these young men. And, I also love their versatility. Especially since English is not their first language. Italian was my extended family's first language but we were not taught because "little pitchers have big ears." we kids knew when the table reverted to Italian it was juicy adult stuff, lol...

My husband and I saw them February 2020, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. They were phenomenal 👏 👏 👏 and are the BEST ITALIAN SINGERS I’VE EVER HEARD! And I can’t wait to see them again, when they begin touring again. I LOVE ALL THREE OF THEM ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

I am glad I saw them at Radio City Music Hall in 2020. They were excellent! They have matured as artists and vocalists.
They are great. Il Volo are my favorite singers ... after Dimash Kudaibergen.
I loved them too and still do! They were fabulous and still are. 💝
I have been mind-boggled by Dimash check him out and have attended his concerts - and I wish they’d sing together. It would be the new concert of the century after the Thee Tenors in the last!
However, Dimash is, I feel, currently going into the kind of pop songs that will destroy his voice. It is already showing strain on his top notes, which are no longer very pure and he goes into falsetto so much now, when he never needed to. He needs to have lyrical music, bel canto, international classics, to sing, be they operatic, quasi-operatic or pop. He wants to be Michael Jackson and so, I’m not a fan of this. And I know I speak for many.
Dimash has signed up with the wrong promotions/artist-management company and I was very disappointed when I saw that. MTV is not the right place for him to aspire to. But that’s where their mentality lies. So they push him to these avenues. He is SO much better than that.
However, because of these choices, Il Volo will probably outlast Dimash in terms of consistency and voice preservation. They are always magnificent with amazing harmonies. Look at them, listen to them, even with maturing voices.
Dimash is starting to sound like other pop singers. Dwelling more on production. He needs to stick with Igor Krutoy, Piergiuseppe Zaia and people like that. And his wonderful Kazakh songs. I can’t imagine Dimash in his mid-thirties with a Michael Jackson persona.
IL Volo, These guys, give you a concert of themselves - pure singing and personality. Real singers. Dimash has all of that, but he imagines that he has to be a Michael Jackson styled artist, which is what he thinks younger people want. We don’t. We want Dimash without the humongous trappings.
So, I’m sticking with I’ll Volo. Thank goodness their path is so clear. They still have three of the most fabulous voices on earth!
