Currently studying Arabic in Egypt and want to begin studying a madhab next year when I have better arabic, found this series very insightful. In sha Allah i will begin with the hanabali madhab. Ustadth , do you know any teachers you would reccomend ?
-Matn Abi Shujaa -Yaqut an Nafis -Zubad by ibn Raslan (full title is Safwat az Zubad, it a 1000 line poem) -Umdatu Salik (there is English translation of this book) -Minhaj by imam Nawawi(first intermediate book in Shafii fiqh) Then advanced books.
The early Shafi'iyah were united with the Hanabilah in creed. Scholars like Al-Bawayti, Imam Al-Muzani, etc are early examples and were students of Imam Ash-Shafi'i. Then came later Shafi'i scholars in the 3rd and 4th century like Imam Sabuni who wrote Aqeedatul Salaf Wa Ashabul Hadith and Imam Lalaka'i who wrote Sharh Usool Itiqad Ahlul Sunnah Wal Jama'ah. The Asharis came into the picture after the Shafi'i madhab had begun. Imam Ash-Shafi'i died in 204 AH which was about 100 years before Abu Hasan Al-'Ashari developed the 'Ashari school in the 4th century. In fact all of the 4 famous Imams died before Abu Hasan Al-'Ashari was even born, included Imam Ahmad who was the last of the 4 imams. He died 19 years before Al-'Ashari was born and Al-'Ashari was originally Mutazili and did not start his own school until his 40s in the middle of his life. Muhammad Abu Mansur Al-Maturidi who started the Maturidis was also only 3 years old when Imam Ahmad died. Neither Abu Mansur Maturidi or Abu Hasan Al-'Ashari met the 4 Imams. The Maturidi and Ashari creeds entered into the 4 madhahib later in time.
