Grooming - Visit the regular barber for a haircut. So that you don’t miss your favorite cut or pay more in a different place. Security - If you live alone - Don’t shop online b4 the trip, as shipments lying outside your door can be robbed or indicates an empty house (Prime target for robbery). Stop regular online supplies like dog/cat food, etc. Have at least one outlet or light source connected to a smart home system, so that lights can come on automatically at sunset & switch off at sunrise. Communication - Activate global roaming on your SIM, so as to receive important SMS’ like 2 factor authentication pin on your home cellular number.
Reduce the hot water tank temperature to vacation. Shut off the water valve to the washing machine. Some people shut the water off. Turn off the garage door so it cannot be opened by a remote but can be used by only the switch inside. Lock the outdoor perimeters (fences, sheds). Charge all surveillance camera batteries and have extra for friends to change.
Use scented small thin bathroom trash bags for shoes. Use a scented kitchen garbage bag to line bottom of suitcase then as a laundry bag. Put them in your suitcase well ahead of time and your bag will smell so nice when it’s time to pack and throughout your trip. Bon voyage!
I learned a long time ago that you should travel with things you wouldn’t miss if they were lost. This lesson came from older generation relatives who survived the evacuation of Manila during the invasion of the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. They had to leave with only the clothes on their back. Having said that, I thrift shop clothing and luggage. Being in a large metro area, I have found once used REI travel luggage and clothing at local Goodwill stores. I keep one bag packed for summer travel and another bag for winter travel, that way I don’t have to worry about finding something around the house. Great TH-cam channel. Some really good and interesting advice
I learned that you can buy toiletries where I’m going. I work for the airlines and always have my travel chargers and such as I have a set for my need on board bag.
If you wear glasses take a spare pair. Trying to get frames fixed in Cusco the night before heading off on the Inca trail taught me that one. The optometrist ground down my lenses to fit new frames.
Bug repellent. Needed that when I traveled SE Asia. However! The Off I packed was like nothing to those mosquitoes. It was only the local stuff that did the trick. Buy bug repellent at your destination.
I have duplicates of everything in my toiletry bag (razor, toothbrush, even extra contact lenses). I restock it before every trip to make sure I have enough of everything (as they are often travel/trial sizes). The one thing at the top of my list though is my eye glasses as I'm often using them right before I leave and they're not packed. Also, don't forget a belt(s).
Yeah same here. I also have an extra phone charger that I use for travel so I don’t have to worry about forgetting to pack one at the last minute. And then if I’m at home and my cord breaks or something, I have that one as a spare until I can buy a new one.
I take a Sea to Summit inflatable pillow and use a t-shirt on it as a cover. In this way, I’m adjusting to only one pillow. I leave AC on Dry at 72 and set-up two fans…no need to inconvenience my friends or family.
I book my pet sitter as soon as I know the dates of my trip. This is the most difficult part of planning for longer trips since my dog can’t be boarded 😂
Don't forget that most basic things can be purchased when you get there. We have toothpaste and sunscreen on the other side of the Atlantic, too, I promise! 😉
Yeah but who wants to go toothpaste shopping on holiday? Makes sense for long term travel but i think some of these are about time management as much as about money or life convenience.
In some countries sunscreen is hella expensive so I get some before I go. And never buy bug spray before you go because it's not guaranteed to work on the bugs in a different country
The best tip for charging items short time before you leave: put the item on your luggage/purse. You remember easily on your bag and so you don’t forget your gear too 🤓
I’m going home to Seattle in 2 days, so this helped, a lot. We almost forgot our phone charger last time, when we came here for a month to California, so you helped me remember! And, we’re dropping off our pets tomorrow, so we don’t have to worry!
Y’all should look into testing base layers for cold weather. You’ve got merino and synthetic materials to pick from. They extremely packable and are crazy warm for their weight. For me, winter travel would be uncomfortable without one.
After 3 years, finally traveling again. Thanks Packhacker for all the great tips and reviews over the last couple of years. I'm finally able to use all the new gear I got, based on your recommendation. Very excited and can't wait to apply all your tips finally :)
You guys rock and helped me alot with down sizing my items to travel I'm still downsizing and I am down to 2 backpacks now I'm trying to get to just one backpack
How dare you call my tablet and headphones “nonessential” !? Haha But I guess I get the point lol Great video guys! Using it as we speak, doing a 4 day weekend at Vegas starting tomorrow.
Videos like this are depressing with all the corona restrictions ... anyway great channel! Hope i will use this tips more frequent once this madness is gone ...
If you’re going to be renting a car at your destination and will be relying on app navigation, make sure to grab your phone charger and phone mount from your car! (And grab your sunglasses from your car if that’s where you keep them, too).
Check the expiration date of your passport. You won’t be allowed to travel if your passport is due to expire within 6 months of your travel plans. Also, make an extensive checklist and go through it a week or so before you leave so you’ll have time to make last-minute purchases.
One thing I would put as a travel tip on 1 week out, 2-3 days out, day before and day of is to hydrate hydrate hydrate. Especially day before and day of. For long haul flights especially. But if you are on the dehydrated side already, which most people tend to be, then starting to drink lots of water with occasional electrolytes will help replenish all systems. This gives you a leg up from the get go. It can help you feel less crappy on the plane for many reasons, but this will so help combat jet lag and allow your body to adjust easier to your destination time zone. Staying hydrated especially while traveling can help your body be more resilient while it is experiencing things it doesn’t regularly. (Sitting for long periods of time on planes and trains, trying new foods that might disagree with you etc.) It’s not like it solves everything but certainly it makes a big difference and I would rather limit the negative effects of jet lag and illness or inactivity as much as possible.
Check weather and if possible stay with friends in the area! What can I get when I get there! Yes I hated fraud calls I got working bank when customers forgot to do travel updates. I use Groupon to find unique places to eat. I have friends pick me up !
@@blondecomet2002 Same. I keep packets of toothpaste, a travel toothbrush, and so much more in my travel dopp kit. It stays fully loaded with duplicates of home grooming faves and lives in my carry-on bag.
