These are excellent value on the second hand market now. A friend just picked one up last month and I had a go in it last week, it’s a very competent, attractive and fun vehicle to drive. Would also pick one up in a heartbeat. Well done Jaguar!
Jaguar X-Type wasn't a failure in my eyes. It was very successful and still is a very reliable car even 20+ years later. It marked several of Jaguar's firsts - Jaguar's first all wheel drive car, the first Jaguar entry level executive saloon, the first Jaguar estate, the first Jaguar diesel - were all X-Types. It took them the X-Type to see what was wrong with Jaguar and why it almost went bankrupt, and it took them the X-Type to make further innovations which ultimately culminated into the XE we love and cherish today. I've owned 4 X-Types and an XE. I still look back at X-types - they have so much character and grace. As far as I'm concerned, Jaguar X-Type is alright.
The X-Type a 'colossal failure'. It was in production from 2001-2009. It reached peak sales in Europe in 2004 at 38K cars. In America 33K in 2002. Jaguar have never sold a car since that has bettered those figures.
The X-Type was nowhere near as successful in South Africa, instead it hurt the brand and the perceptions. Dealer networks and running / maintenance costs (thanks to the weak Rand / Pound exchange rate) left a foul taste in many a fan's mouth. [Chad]
In australia if you pit this against a holden VF commodore or a ford falcon the aussie cars would destroy it with performance but in terms of everything else the jag wins

Funny because in the us they're offering the xe cheaper than both the 3 series and the a4.
