Thank you, Michael. I do so miss the old Yonkers Public Library. I read every single fairy tale book there was in that building.

Thank you for sharing Mike. These are great! They brought back beautiful memories. I grew up in yonkers and then in 1985 moved to Los Angeles at the age of 16. I love Los Angeles, but my home will always be Yonkers, New York. I went back and took my daughter and niece with me. My daughter fell in Love with New York and later went back to visit with friends. What ever happened to Landi's wedges? When i went back i looked for the place right before we went to the airpot, but to my dismay it was gone. They made the best sandwiches!

Thanks for sharing. Born and raised in Yonkers. I see a lot of changes even after me leaving in 2007. I use to go to Galaxy restaurant in Getty Square that I see now is a Dunkin Donuts. Other changes I’ve noticed.

My only wish is that there was another photo of the former Loew's (Brandt's) Theater on South Broadway between Vark and Herriot Streets. The one at the 1:30 mark (with Louie's Italian Restaurant at the corner) gives you an idea of the size of the theatre but does not include the entrance and marquees.

The then/now format does not work well with what is gone completely, but SoYo Sunset does reproduce a photo such as you describe:

01:49 holy craps, that's the barber shop that my father apprenticed me to and tried to make a barber out of me back the '60s (i sucked at it, and I just did my homework and shined shoes). the lumber yard across the street is where i scrounged discarded pieces of wood that the barber made into rubber stamps as a side business. the building next to the lumber yard was a funeral home. and next to the barber shop is a gas station (Gambardella i think is spelled). if you go straight ahead, on the left you'll pass a Chinese dry cleaner, then a stationary store where, at 13, i bought my first pack of "True" cigarettes, a few blocks down the street you'll merge into south Broadway.
If the car parked in front of the barber shop is what i think it is, then this photo is from a few years before 1970. the owner of the barber shop drove a mid/late 50's model (the parked car). the daughter didn't want to be taught driving in that, so the Father upgraded to a 5- or 6-year-old, used '63 valiant.

Michael - I have a picture of a church/chapel situated somewhere in North Yonkers in 1967. I've searched high and low, but have not been able to identify it. It's just the side view, and it could have been razed.

A lot of time spent well done. I would like to know if the photo archives have specific collections based on building use or licensed intent ? I am researching a cold case from 70 years ago in Yonkers. I lived in this diverse city from 1967- 1972 unrelated to my current research project. RS

The tax assessors maintain an address-based archive online of photos of the properties, not sorted or sortable as far as I know. In addition to more current photos, for about half the properties they include a low resolution photo from their 1954 survey.
