Marilyn got savaged by the mainstream (even though he achieved major mainstream success) press and by religious groups etc much like heavy metal bands in the 80's did such as W.A.S.P., Twisted Sister and even Judas Priest for being corrupting to the youth. But few realised how much in touch he was with the disillusioned youth and those of alternative subcultures at the time and most of all, how articulate and ahead of his time he really was. I'm pushing 40 today but even today since the 90's, his influence on me is still mindblowing.
