I grew up invisible and devalued. I was mocked and abused. I had no hope and saw no future for myself. I believed it all. My ethnicity is irrelevant. I don’t have a culture because I was not invited into it. But I got my college degree with no help or support. It was because I achieved what I did 100% on my own. I had no one else to give credit to but myself. I stretched out my own legs and carried myself through all that and now I have confidence. I teach that to my children. They get all my love and support. I’m putting 3 good people into this world. And I did it all with Autism. 🧩🌻

This sister’s internal voice is sooooooooo pure, wise, and simply amazing!!! She’s an ENTIRE vibe. I could listen to her for hours and hours. The sound of her voice, in all of its melodic beauty is distinctive and always clearly identifiable, and her talent is unparalleled! I too idolized Ms. Cicely Tyson, and rank her as one of the THE best actors I’ve ever seen. My beautiful mama was her biggest fan, and ensured that as a thespian I saw each of her phenomenal works, may they both Rest In Paradise. I remember the very first time I saw Viola on screen, immediately I called my mama, at work, to tell her about this PHENOMENAL black woman I’d just seen who was “the next Cicely Tyson!” May GOD continue to abundantly bless, guide, cover, and keep her?

    Oh how I love Viola.
3:30 On another TH-cam channel I just posted a comment on this very issue. I grew up in the Midwest and sans the immense poverty Viola experienced, I share her pain maturing in a world where I was forced to assimilate.
Wasted years of making sure I looked a certain way. Spoke a certain way. Acted a certain way for fear of verifying negative stereotypes society has about Black women. Surpressing my anger, because to show even the smallest degree of it, resulted in being painted as the angry Black women.
Assimilating too well because it resulted in being defined as "one of the good ones". Years of not being authentic, wasted. Even now as an old lady, I find myself sometimes in mixed company, censoring my behavior.
I can't wait to read the book. I always respected and admired Viola's beauty inside and out. Now by way of her book I can understand the formative years of her life that created this woman I adore.😘

Thank you Viola. A lot of us needed to hear this truth. It is beautiful and goes far and beyond what any of us can ever see or ever experienced. Thank you again. And I'm so sorry for that little girl that had to go through all of that messiness. I am a mother of three grown up women and I did everything to protect them and keeping them save and for that I thank God.

Viola Davis really endured extreme poverty, Sunny Hostin did not. That comment she made about being from the South Bronx projects in no way shape or form compares to how Viola Davis grew up. I also grew up in the south Bronx projects specifically millbrook projects in the 70’s and sunny was born in 1968. I NEVER endured poverty, my family and I consisted of 6 people of Puerto Rican culture and we ate 3 meals everyday and never were homeless, hungry or barefoot. I also went to catholic school while I lived in the projects and so did many of my neighbors. The housing projects back then were not how they are today and even today living there your not experiencing hunger. They may be dangerous but extreme poverty is a whole other level that sunny can’t compare to.

Such an inspirational woman and a living embodiment of the old saying of the spiritually victorious, "I don't look like what I've been through". When I see Viola, it's always been the vision of the glamourous, extraordinarily gifted and educated actor of stage and screen- lauded, applauded, awarded... but to hear her testimony of personal life triumph is awe-inspiring beyond words❤‍🩹.

I like conversations like this as a black person. I also hate that conversations like this are needed. Just like in "Fences" the black man has also suffered and struggle right along side the black women. Yet, now that our women are moving with momentum, It feel as if they are separating from their male counter parts. It's more of an independent movement for black woman and not black family.... I love Viola and all the achievements of my sisters, cousin, auntie and mothers... But, I want to see more attention placed on family, that's where we are losing our wealth...

She always makes me cry. In shame, in happiness, in sympathy. Viola is one strong Black woman who is finally owning her personal story. We are highly privileged that she has chosen to share it in her words, her acting and her commitment to furthering the black female experience.

This lovely woman has to be able to tell her story, even the horrible stuff, and if people can't listen to it, then they are losing out. Her story is powerful and I respect her so much.
