  • From the Festival of the Bluegrass, June 7, 1996...
The Scene's penultimate number on this evening set-(they were later called back for an encore)-was the great classic from the Stanley Brothers, "How Mountain Girls Can Love." The Stanleys recorded this number in September, 1958, on King 615, a "must-have" LP for all bluegrass music fans. Carter and Ralph Stanley, with Bill Napier and Al "Towser Murphy" Elliott, had first publicly performed the song in a live show at New River Ranch just three weeks earlier. (See all the details in Gary Reid's wonderful book, "The Music of the Stanley Brothers," University of Illinois Press, 2015.)
This high-energy video clip of the Seldom Scene was captured by the talented Kentucky Educational Television crew directed by Russ Farmer. It features Ben Eldridge (banjo), John Duffey (mandolin), Ronnie Simpkins (bass), Dudley Connell (guitar) and Fred Travers (dobro).

Great post Tom. With Duffey, McReynolds and Stanley we has some unreal and unique high harmony voices. So special. Thanks.

Dudley was so good as a Johnson mountain boy but he absolutely sucks a a Seldom Scene man. Way outclassed by the rest of the band members.

Wow, that is incredibly rude. You might not like him in that role but to say he sucked is just entirely off base. And the fact that he had Duffey and Eldridge's approval to fill that spot for the band speaks volumes.

@@JasonHannan he played in band less than a year before Duffey died. Watch the sunrise video. Duffey puts him in his place.

@@Bascomblodge he doesn’t fit in. Even in The book about John Duffey. Connell explains how intimidated and weak he was/is. He should re establish the mountain boys really. He can’t cut the mustard with TSS
