John Duffy, one of the best bluegrass voices I’ve ever heard, a high lonesome sound
The Scene came to my home town fair. They had Tony Rice on guitar. Holy moley! They came out of the back of the stage where I was sitting to speak with them. They came over and sat down on some old wooden bleachers. I tried to leave. John Duffy said, stay a spell young man. What a conversation. Never forget that. Thanks Jan for another classic.
Saw them every Thursday night at Birchmere for many years and Tony Rice unit too...many festivals....great fun back in those 80s and 90s days😍.
they were / still are one of the friendliest down to earth bunch of guys you'd ever want to meet. spent much time always talking about something...and the humor was unmatched.
Along about this time I went to a one afternoon show with the Scene at the park by the river in Ft. Myers Florida, and yes it was one he'll of a show, Lou Ried was in his vocal prime, I'll never forget it.

Brilliant Winterhawk shows in 90's. One player said to Duffey 'where'd you get those pants? look like they're from a couch!' Duffey- 'i never let anything go to waste!'
God...most of them are gone today. They were genius with their instruments. I got pretty close to the group from the late 1970's thru 2003, with a last one being of Ben Eldridge and one of his last on road tours lconcerts, performing as SCENE, in New Bedford, Ma, 2003. Mike Aldridge, also was a friend to me, met him several times along with Duffy at the Birchmere, in Alexandria, Va....1982.
Fastest 30 minutes in bluegrass. Saw them in the 70s and still enjoy hearing John, Ben and Mike playing as part of the original lineup.
Anything John Duffy & any of the fine gentlemen musicians that got to play with him. Couldnt even beg for better

I remember the day i found out all these guys all had "day jobs" these legendary musicians) entertainers.... should have been able to just focus on music.... they are so incredibly awesome

I'll always be a fan of the original Scene, but Lou Reid was a great asset to them being so talented with vocals & different instruments. T. Michael always held the timing so well while tastefully showing off at times on the bass. Great video!!

I've been watching some recent videos of the Scene & Ron Stewart has really impressed me with how well he's fitting in!!!!!!!
Replicating Ben's banjo playing is no easy task!!!!!!! Ben would break his roll on something & tie it all together so well that you never knew it. Everything he did with the Scene was intricate, yet when he played powerful, it was never overdone. He always complimented whatever the vocals were doing. A true master musician who never got the recognition he deserved!!!!!!!
I imagine Ron did a TON of listening & woodshedding to learn Ben's playing style in & out. I'm sure Ben is proud of the way his banjo legacy is being carried on!!!!!!! The Seldom Scene is probably one of the longest running bands in BG music history. I hope the band legacy will continue to be around for MANY years to come!!!!!!!

doesn't every BG fan? what a voice and he sure knew his way around that mandolin. you never knew what going to come out of his mouth at live performances. great entertainer, great band.

I remember in college (I went to Georgetown) when the people I was sharing a house with in Arlington said "Let's go to the Birchmere." I said "What's the Birchmere?" Well, I found out. Alas I wasn't into country and bluegrass as much in those days, and I think I only went twice while I was living there. (For those not aware, the Seldom Scene were/are the house band, and I think one or more members of the group own the venue.)
Miss John, all these years,he was the Greatest showman ever graced this earth, plus he could sing

this a excellent set executed by a most excellent band. i miss tom grey's stand up base but lou reid is a great replacement at lead vocals. i sure miss the ole scene. wish i had the song list. thank for posting.

The Scene picked up the Song Say You Lied from a JD Crowe recording, and it is indeed written by the incredible Russell Smith lead singer for the Amazing Rhythm Aces, very prolific song writer too, and played in a bluegrass band of his own for while.

In the early 70's around D.C. when we were in high school and college we'd frequently see The Seldom Scene, the original band. John Duffey would always knock us out with his playing and razor sharp wit. They'd blow us away with tunes like I Know You Rider, which as Deadheads, we loved. Their connection with Emmylou, Linda and Lowell was well known to us and we felt very lucky to have them as our own.

OK...Jan 08/17!...I met a guy, 1978, in Grande Prairie Alta., named Barry Richardson who showed me this tune and we had a wee 3 pc. band and played this ditty too many times. He claimed that he wrote it. Is this true?...'cause it's a goodin' by these gents anyway! haha

Hi Jan, again, I just looked up the author of 'Say you lied' because of your query and it was author Howard Russell Smith, no date but obviously before 1978 ! Thanks for the inspiration to look it up...Hail the Scene!!
Drummer for The Amazing Rhythm Aces I think. George McKnight used to play it all the time in Prince George B.C. on his Uptown Bluegrass radio show. The Old Fort Jug Band also played it around P.G. in various venues.
