As a hive mind bees can spend up to 3 weeks searching and discussing locations for a new hive. As a true democracy they communicate until a decision is unanimously decided amongst the entire hive. That's really cool a sunflower can act as temporary home for them I wouldn't have thought it!

To my knowledge and experience, when i'ts like that as a swarm it does have about 3 days before it needs to find a new home, they have for about 3days worth of food in them so they need to get settled quickly to get back to foraging.

Bobka is a very patient kitty haha. I hadn't commented on how you hold her cos she didn't seem to mind too much, especially because you put her down when she squirms (which is far more important than any hold technique - respecting the cat as an individual living being is something that a lot of people struggle with, but putting her down when she squirms shows you do respect her individuality), but yes there are better ways. give their bellies and feets all the support you can. the best way is to hold them like you're burping a baby. All my cats are ok with hanging over my shoulder like that. three of them I can carry with one arm, the fourth is a bit more skittish and needs more support.

🌱 I'm in zone 7b and got my second greenstalk tower a few weeks ago (from Epic Gardening! Thanks Kris for your help with Customer Service!) and so I decided why not, let's just toss in more green beans even though we're at the end of June. I was overall late with planting this year but I thought it couldn't hurt to try. I absolutely love your trays and 6 and 4 seed cell trays! I thought they were so expensive and that maybe the whole 'reusable' thing was a bit of a marketing gimmick or something but then I decided I want to support you guys anyway so i bought a bunch and I've gotta say... I was so wrong! The quality of these is amazing and they really are trays and cells that will last years and years! They are *nothing* like the ones you buy off amazon and at home depot or wherever. Those ones really suck in comparison and are a waste of money. Anyway, love your products, thank you for making them!

This year I’ve been succession sowing determinate tomato plants so I’ll have multiple large harvests over the summer and into the fall to make sauce.
I also just planted my second round of watermelons because my first round is putting on fruit now. Flowers and basil get direct sowed all throughout the summer.
I feel like I’m finally figuring out how to optimize how much I can get out of the space I have. Having a long growing season here in NorCal definitely helps!

So far, I’ve germinated Sunshine & Sunset runner beans, red noodle & mosaic yard long beans, Greek gigantic beans, autumn zebra beans, greasy grits beans, India hybrid & India white hybrid bitter melon, and kajari melons. Some curious creature ate my cucumber and torpedo melon sprouts! 😩 Whyyyyy?! Could you do a video on when to harvest dried beans? Do I let them dry on the vine? Or pick them and dry them in the house? Thanks for these encouraging videos.

Growing in Zone 6b, but man it's been a weird year for gardening up here in the Pacific Northwest. I'll consider myself lucky if we're harvesting our first tomatoes by August; normally I've got heaps of Sungold tomatoes in June but it took until the solstice for the sun to finally show up!
And word up on the yard-long beans from Kitazawa! I have some Akasanjaku in the ground that I'm trying to grow in between my usual varieties of bush beans, hoping for giant towers sticking out from the crowded sea of hobbit beans below. Tried to get some scarlet runners started but the slugs and earwigs just went to town on them in our wet spring.
I vow to start anything and everything indoors in February next year, so I'm hoping that I can swoop up some of those colorful trays along with some domes and 1020 bases before then. Keep up the good work, lads, the gardens look amazing!

I’m living life on the edge in Kansas. I’m gonna succession plant! Sort of. For the first time in my gardening life there are tons of insects (I’ve never heard of) that have been devouring my garden. Some massive, demonic beetle thingie from the abyss was absolutely murdering one of my sunflowers! It was so crispy and huge I was timid about removing it.
Plus our region is hotter and it seems to stay hot much longer than when I was a teen… Some of my plants died off or bolted much sooner because it hit 100 in MAY, instead of July. Oops.
My old house never had so much as an aphid so this was a shock to see colorful little armies having the munchies on my best efforts.
The soil I had before was brown gold! Anything I sowed flourished without amendments.I didn’t realize how rare that is haha!
So I started some compost and this fall it will be ready soon. The first loss is so hard, Kevin. Stay cool out there and thanks for the regular morale boost.
Hi Jacques, fellow hermit! My favorite episodes are when you are with Kevin and cracking jokes. I love you too!

I'm sowing a bunch of stuff atm. Herbs, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, and some flowers. I live in a apartment in LA. I garden on my balcony and it has proven to be a challenge to get right. It also doesn't help that my previous tomato seedlings got severe sun scald during june... I hope they recover but if not I got ones I'm starting up. What sucks is that the sun doesn't hit every part of balcony during the summer due to it being directly above me. I have to wait until September for the sun to lower and have it hit most of my balcony. That's my prime growing time plus it isn't as hot.

You 2 are a blast to watch together, seriously! Yes, I’m starting another round of seeds now of plants that are basically the same as you 2 were suggesting. Everything popped so much faster this time, I’m about to up pot or transplant outside already. My biggest reason for failures & having to have a bigger mid season seed starting session is because I went crazy in the beginning & planted too many seeds and way too many vegetable plants, and everything got neglected. Hopefully I learned a lesson that will stay with me forever.

There a few different species of strawflowers sometimes called paper daisies. Some are short lived perrenials or biaanuals and depending on your climate you can be having blooms all through winter. I have a couple of locally native species where I am in Australia and they are absolute pollinator powerhouses. They are known to be important plants for native butterflies and other pollinators here.

I'm definitely doing a second sowing, not because of any failures so far, but because I don't want any unproductive space. I planted carrots back in May, and will be sowing more soon (and still more later on), I have the last of the long-season onions I started a couple months ago to go into the ground, and then I have a number of different shorter-season onion seeds which will be sown here and there throughout my garden. Also "regular" and Japanese cucumbers, I started them indoors some time ago, but I think I'm going to try sowing a couple of seeds directly, to see how they do with that method.

Here in Alabama, or at least in my garden, powdery mildew starts shortly after I transplant my cukes and zucchinis. I immediately use my grand grandmother's remedy. I grab a container with Ash from the fireplace and sprinkle it all over the leaves of the plants. Usually one or two applications is plenty. This year, so far, I had to use it only once.

I’m growing luffa too. I snipped the edge of the round side with nail clippers and had 13 of 14 seeds germinate. I started them in February and am just now getting them moved outside due to the over abundance of rain and low temps in Oregon this spring. I’m hopeful that they will work out, I harvested the seeds from my brother’s plants so I do know it’s possible for them to grow here. I’m excited to watch them grow! I’m also giving the Clancy potatoes a try, keep us updated on them Jaques!!

Definitely starting a second sowing for summer. I was away in Hawaii (like you) for about a month for work, and have some extra space that needs filling, and a few plants that didn't quite make it.

Those bottom tray 10x20s look legit and if they're the same quality as the 6-cells I'm sure they will last a lifetime. Speaking of which I love the color options, those pink cells look awesome! Now that we are in the hottest days of CA summer I am curious to know just how much cooler the soil temperature in the pinks are.
BTW suggestion to make your store more user friendly, is consistency with how you select size, color and amount. Personally I prefer how you did the 4-cells, it's less clutter in the entire store just having the one 4-cells button, instead of one for each color like there is with the 6-cells (Which BTW the photos for the new colors are still the original black). The only confusing thing is you select the color of the 4-cells under a tab labelled "size". So if you're going with the default amount you might never see that option.
A single button & page for each type of product, where you can further select all options regarding color, depth, and amount, makes the most sense to me.

Shasta Daisy leaves are edible. I usually add them with other greens. Just give them afternoon shade.

No second sowing until August. Too hot here in Dallas, Tx (101 degrees). Tomatoes are about to fizzle out. Taking suckers to plant up and keep inside - then wait for cooler temps. to plant outside. BTW. - love the chemistry. Ya'll make me feel like I'm included in your garden friends circle.

You can cut suckers off a tomato plant and root them to a new plant?! How? Do you put in water first?

    • @MariaSanchez-zf9cs

@@cathysteele924 you can plant immediately if you want. I have mine in water. I’ll pot up as soon as I see some roots form. Lots of videos on TH-cam about it

if you want some super easy to take care of flowers that buttlerflies, hummingbirds, and smaller pollinators absolutely love, I recommend some verbenas. i planted some like a year or two ago and they not only come back every year but they spread like no other plant ive ever seen. tall clusters of small purple flowers

Definitely verbena or lantana (which is in the verbena family). I have lantanas in my yard and the butterflies are always ALL OVER that bush.

I’m also going to start a second sowing because my cucumbers and okra got fried in the heat wave and I went on vacation and didn’t use a shade cloth. The same thing happen to me with Shasta daisies and purple coneflower. I got them as starts at a nursery and maybe it was mislabeled or I was confused. Now I am planting more purple coneflower and sunflowers as well.

As I was looking at your table of contents list, I was wondering about the Skyscrapper Sunflower ... "Is it a tough, shorter sunflower that scraps with the tall plants?" But when you said it and it was listed on the video, the extra 'p' was gone. I just thought I'd give you a heads up (or down, when it's going to seed ;D) about the type-o in both table of contents (list and videos below that) in the description. I hope you got a bit of a chuckle out of how I interpreted the possible name - I'm not familiar with various kinds of sunflower seeds, so it could have been with 2 p's. :D
Thanks for your videos (actually, this is my first time on your homesteading site, I usually watch the epic gardening videos). Even though you can do a lot more in your climate than I can in mine, I still learn from your videos. I'm in central BC where the winters get as low as -40 C/F for a week (or colder) each winter, and this year the snow came & stayed on 3 Nov & the last bit of snow melted in mid April. However, I do love the sunlight hours, currently from about 5 am to 9 pm, a far cry from the winter days in Dec (as short as 8:20 am to 3:45 pm) so I much prefer the summers here!

I just started a second round last week. This year I got off to a late start (due next month with our first child and I did not have the energy for a garden after teaching all day 😴) so I bought some starter plants to tide me over. I started pole and bush beans, marigolds, thyme, basil, tomatoes, squash (winter and summer), peppers (hot and sweet), mint, he butterfly peas, lettuce and spinach for some of my shady areas.
We're hoping this kid loves to be out in the garden and will feel free enough to just go out and grab a snack whenever he likes 😂

I'm in Newfoundland and our last frost was only a couple weeks ago, but we're now sitting at around 25 degrees celsius in the day. There's just no predicting what the weather will do here. So I literally planted my first beans today, meanwhile the peas I cold sowed in April haven't set a single flower yet. Just got all my summer squash transplants hardened off and set in the ground a couple days ago, tomatoes same. It's the very beginning of our warm season here.
