Dr. Son Pham, CEO and Chief Scientist of BioTuring:
Son's bachelor thesis with researchers from Saint Petersburg and INRIA (the French research institute for digital sciences) led to several factors of running time improvements for the Google web page ranking algorithm. During his Ph.D. with Pavel Pevzner at UC San Diego, he invented the notion of paired de Bruijn graph, a theoretical framework for using read pair in genome assembly. He joined built SPADES genome assembler, later being cited more than 20 thousand times. He also co-taught the first bioinformatics course on Coursera with Pavel Pevzner and Phillip Compeau, which enrolled 20,000 students.Son then studied Neuroscience at Salk Institute with Fred Gage and contributed to a finding that detected mitochondrial abnormalities in young neurons from patients with bipolar disorder. He now dedicates most of his time to tackling complex computational challenges alongside the next generation of scientists to build the next AI system for Biology (aka BioMind). He finds inspiration while walking and meditating on difficult problems, constantly seeking innovative solutions.
