Javier Fernandez I agree man. He has become one of my favorite players. I saw him in montgomery Alabama not too long ago as a trio and they blew me away. I’m 22 but I have an old soul and his sound is straight Woodstock 69’ I love it. My gf gets tired of me playing his songs because I can just play them back to back haha. But I do love how he’s not into changing just because the terrible music industry that we have today is changing. Much respect for Doyle. I hope to play on the same stage with him one day!
I'm not saying he hasn't done well, he's great, and I'm a fan, but like Philip Sayce (who I'm a huge fan of), he isn't really marketable in any way that would attract music industry predators. That's a compliment, not a negative thing.

Just came back to this for the zillionth time, for anyone else that geeks out on this guys tone like me, at 3:36 when he says he's showing his tone straight in, he's actually going through the Zonk! You can see the light on compared to other shots of the board while hes playing. Great example of a Zonk tone.
Awesome! Love Doyle's playing and sound. He reminds me of Rory Gallagher in the way he handles the music industry. He is one of the best but you have to seek him out and once you do, you feel like you found a gem.
Great look at Doyle's pedals, he has the sounds down. It seems like yesterday when Doyle Sr passed, Doyle II, love that, I'm not a Jr, I'm a II myself, love to have some of these, it takes decades to flesh out a sound like this & lots of money. Reverb really did a great job on this video, Doyle is a Texas treasure who has seen more than a short video can show & it comes out in his playing. Rock on!
fuzzes are great because they're mostly simple circuits, so you can divert the buying impulse into a making impulse, for much cheaper. this also allows you to experiment and mod indefinitely.
I used to get pissed off in high school trying to get his sound on the Arc Angels record. Then I read later he played upside-down. It’s really tough to make a guitar ring and respond the same way if you play bass strings up. Your whole approach is different. He is a great player and an even better songwriter.
After spending about 24 years trying to copy the exact tones of Albert King and Otis Rush, Dick Dale and also Doyle, I concur! One thing you can do though with the G string is try pulling it downwards, it can give a more “quivering” sort of open tone.
I do something like this, but with an Xotic BB preamp instead of the Jan Ray. It makes my MJM London fuzz (fuzz face circuit) way more stable and focused in a band mix. Love this guy's playing.
Just to confirm: I put the BB preamp after. From my experience, London Fuzz (and fuzz faces in general) work best as the first pedal in your signal chain, directly after your guitar.
I kinda felt like the title was a bit misleading, I kinda thought he would explain a bit more on the chemistry of OD and Fuzzes and how to use them well together. I may have missed over it but that's just me. It was still a great video! Not hating!
Gafar Bello, at 3:05 he talks about using the fuzzes with his Jan Ray overdrive, to change the tone. That section goes on for about a minute or two, just talking about combining his various fuzzes with the Jan Ray.

Probably watched this video a million times. Always thought the Vibe-Bro Uni-vibe sound he demonstrated sounded weird. Very un-univibey. But I just realized something... It's because he's using it on the "vibrato "setting! You rarely hear players using the vibrato setting, it's almost always the "chorus" setting as that's what Jimi liked to use. It's extra weird because I don't think I've ever heard him using the vibrato setting when he plays live, it's always the chorus setting for that hypnotic pulsating sound. I wonder why he chose to demo that function of the pedal... especially when he did the "Woodstock jimi thing" part! Jimi was def using the chorus setting at Woodstock.
I've watched Doyle play quite a bit, but never realized that he uses up-picking so much. I know Albert King played with the guitar upside down, but used down-strokes with his thumb. Wonder how that originated? Great player.

I have a DOD 250 modified by Scotty at pro analog for Mr. Bramhall.for the Clapton '02 tour,(which I coincidentally saw) or so it says painted on the back. I got it in trade with a Les Paul about 10 years ago. I still use it all the time, it kills...

have you ever checked out Eric Gales?..i prefer Doyle..but Gales does some insane upside down chord work...as well as anything else that you could imagine...all upside down...
I saw some of those shows with Roger as well (2000/2001). Doyle was playing through some model of Yamaha amp, at least part of the time (and maybe a Vox AC30 too) not sure why that was the case.
I play like he does. I pick like a regular. Not so many upstrokes. We didn't have allot of lefty guitars in the 80s. I took my dad's and turned it upside down. I have no problem playing anything.
Wait a minute.. so he plays a left handed strat, but still strings it up reversed so the top string is the high E. So he could also take a regular right handed guitar and flip it over (and not restring it and change the nut). Damn!
would LOVE to see & hear more from Doyle about his tone...he didn't play anything in this video with his clean tone...i'd also love to know what his string gauge is...and i'd like to hear what all those other pedals do...

To most I ve spoken, they express positive attributes to the Strymon line of pedals. I do know that they have a few different varieties of pedal combinations. But, as of yet I have not experienced the voicings. I don't have that all important urge to get them on the board. But, it seems they are something you either like re well or you do not. JED TAYLOR never needed one. Only use distortion, od, or fuzz. But gave in and got the ridiculously priced riverside. It's ok. Not sure why so much $$$ though.
I m not one who goes hog wild about pedals. I purchased some old multi pedals and if I have a urge I ll plug into an older hd400 or a amplify 100 or two perhaps 3 pedals of a single type. But,, They tout the ax effects and the assorted other computer operatec effects systems these days it makes me wonder so I started searching. Nearly manic depression tryin for great tone. Because the pedals do not get along very well.

Shin-Ei, the same name as the Japanese manufacturer that originally built the Uni-Vibe. Seems that some Austin pedal builders bought the licensing of the defunct brand name.
That's very cool. Why waste a great name? I once played a great Japanese octave-type fuzz called a Crown and I've never seen or heard one since. Sounded like ripping sheets of metal. No sustain or compression. Great for sci-fi sounz
How to I get that fuzz tone in the intro of video? Do I need a specific pedal or pedals or can any fuzz pedal get that tone with the right adjustment? All these damn fuzz pedal videos on YT have guys playing hard ass heavy metal sounding sh!t on the fuzz pedals. I want that smooth, dark, tight tone like the intro

For example at 2:03 after he is talking about his VibeBro it doesn't sound like what he is playing uses the pedal. I'd just be curious to know which sounds actually correspond with which pedals. Thanks!
I agree with others that he has a lot of gear to produce basically the same tone. Slight variations in the fuzz sounds, but not sure it is discernible enough to have a board that complex. He could have one fuzz, one OD, and one Octavia and nobody would recognize the difference.
All the comments are crazy. I think it's fine. I'm am however, amazed how guys like Derek Trucks and Waddy Wachtel, just plug into an amp and play without any effects. Then another guys has 40 pedals.
I like the fuzz tone without the jan ray. Man.. he should try the Timmy.. if he hasnt already. I have had both and think the Timmy is better EQ'd and tuned to the sweet spots for the guitar. More “transparent” and better for stacking overdrives, imho.
The Tim and Timmy was back in the day when the Klon Centaur, OCD, Landgraff, Fulltone, Z Vex, Way Huge, Prescription Electronics was a big deal. I ended up with a Hudson Broadcast and a KTR in place of the Timmy for a transparent overdrive.

Suzanne is who Prince wrote nothing compares to you about. Doyle used to be nice looking. There's still hope. But sorry no Howard stern in that face.
He should send his board to Dan from the gig rig, and have him rebuild his board with a G2 switching system. Dan is a genius, and has built some of the greatest pedalboards for countless musicians!

Gafar Bello he doesn’t even know what order the pedals are in so I think he doesn’t understand the combinations further than “I like the sound..”

After you see the Doyle fuzz tone, everything makes sense! Fuzz pedal has a great sound if you find its tone.
His best sound can be heard on "Shape I'm In" live Austin, Tx. Or his Flying V blues solo with Clapton on "Little Queenie"

He is using the Vibe-Bro at 2:03. Doyle does tend to run his amps a bit overdriven so that is the grit that you're hearing. Thanks for watching!

I like the fuzz tone without the jan ray. Man.. he should try the Timmy.. if he hasnt already. I have had both and think the Timmy is better EQ'd and tuned to the sweet spots for the guitar. More “transparent” and better for stacking overdrives, imho.
The Tim and Timmy was back in the day when the Klon Centaur, OCD, Landgraff, Fulltone, Z Vex, Way Huge, Prescription Electronics was a big deal. I ended up with a Hudson Broadcast and a KTR in place of the Timmy for a transparent overdrive.
