I think Tony destroying the suits in the end is questionable for sure. But he's not just doing it for Pepper, but also himself so he can try to move on from his trauma.

Funny little trivia. Tony tells the little boy near the start "I loved you in A Christmas Story, by the way." The actor who played Ralphie, Peter Billingsly, was in the first Iron Man. He's good friends with Jon Favreau and Favreau likes to give him roles (like the Elf Foreman in Elf). He was the technician Stane yells TONY STARK WAS ABLE TO BUILD THIS IN A CAVE, WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS! Which he responds "I'm sorry, I'm not Tony Stark."

Destroying the suits was the sign he was ready to move forward. Those suits are a part of his past, everything now will be new. Also, he built many of them because he couldn't sleep due to his trauma, now he is leaving much of that trauma behind and starting fresh, with a clean slate.

    • @Jessica_Roth
      @Jessica_Roth 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

It was SCHEDULED to be a Christmas film, but "The Avengers", which was released in May 2012, kept making so much $$ that they decided not pull it from the theaters and pushed this one back to May 2013. So all the "Christmas" references made no sense.
Of course, it's not really an issue for a retrospective such as this, but at the time it was slightly ridiculous.

To me this was less an Iron Man movie and more a Shane Black movie featuring Tony Stark.
Personally I love Shane as a writer and director.
This one was a bit divisive. The Mandrin is an iconic villain from the comics and this version is quite a departure.
But I loved the way they handled Tony's mental health.

    • @Jessica_Roth
      @Jessica_Roth 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I didn't hate the swerve so much per se, but knowing that they did it because the Chinese government didn't want a Chinese villain and Marvel was groveling to please Chairman Xi, that was pretty annoying.
From here, it's just a small step to the NBA hanging Darryl Morey out to dry because he dared speak up for Hong Kong or John Cena having to read a pathetic "apology" (IN Mandarin) because he referred to Taiwan as an independent nation…which it IS.
      Shame on Marvel/Disney.
Also, having had to suffer through "The Last Boy Scout", I think a little Shane Black goes a long way. But RDJ was grateful that Shane hired him AND paid the insurance for "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", when Robert was just out of prison and couldn't get bonded, so now that Marvel needed to sign RDJ back up (you can see that this is written as a possible exit point for him, right? His contract was up), he was able to get them to hire Shane.
Which is how we get all this stupidity with the flying suit parts, which is only there so Shane get the cheap "laugh" of Tony getting hit in the dick. Twice.
And if the suit can fly so far ("832 miles", the goon helpfully says) so fast, how come it didn't leave sonic booms all across Georgia??
And does every tiny piece of the suit have an individual propulsion unit? That seems VERY redundant.
And if the reason the parts go on Tony's body is because he gave himself 50 implants, does that mean there's an implant in his dick? OUCH! (Or one in his head, for the helmet? Doesn't sound wise.)
And if the implants are why the suit parts fly to appropriate part on the recipient, then how can Tony put the suit on Pepper? Did he put 50 implants in HER body, too? Including one in HER, er, ahem?
(And if Pepper does have an implant "down there", does that mean that when Tony is feeling horny, he just wiggles his hips and Pepper comes flying? Trailing sonic booms all the way??)
Stupid, stupid film. One of Marvel's worst.
Although, I grant you, the image of Tony injecting an implant into KILLIAN's dick (so he can put the suit on Aldrich at the, er, climax) is somewhat amusing. But rather unlikely, IMO.

I didn't like this movie when it came out, but it grew on me. It really highlights Tonys PTSD and survivors guilt.
Extremis came from the Agents of SHIELD tv show. Basically it allowed the subject to regrow missing organs or limbs. If you force the organism to work too hard, it tends to explode. That's how Pepper killed Killian; she overloaded the Extremis in his system.
... Don't know if you caught it, but when Tony drove away from his old house, DUMM*E was on the trailer. He survived!
Small spoiler: Tony will make more suits.
Next up, Thor: the Dark World, _then_ Winter Soldier!

What if…? In an alternate continuity that will affect the MCU…
Ben Kingsley is the real Mandarin - reimagined by myself as a Hindu Singaporean militarism extremist who has been the main orchestrator of the entire Iron Man trilogy, sporting the same attire, hairdo, beard and even having a dragon tattoo from left clavicle, around and down to the right back hip of his chiselled muscular physique that lights up when super Saiyan’d up - and the characters Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) and Xu Wenwu (Tony Leong) from Shang-Chi were his protégés - next in line to adopt the mantle to further spread his iron plague - similar to Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Bin Laden, Jinping, Putin etc
And to further extent, similar to Heath Ledger’s Joker, have him stand out as force of nature, never to be reckoned with. His past his unknown (real name) and he considers himself as a true civil servant (mandarin).
That is what the MCU could’ve ended up with.
Imagine the Kingsley Mandarin working with Thanos (Josh Brolin)!!! Those two have similar agendas/mindsets - imagine all of the chaos and carnage throughout the infinite world…and other multiverses…
P.S. reason why Kinglsey’s Mandarin would sound American while speaking English in contrast to sounding Asian when speaking his native Singaporean, Mongolian and/or Chinese he might’ve learned it from some radical far-right extremist from America who can also speak Asian languages

5:45 "When's the last time you got a good night's sleep?"
"Einstein slept three hours a year."
First, Tony, Albert Einstein slept eight hours a night, _every_ night, and took various naps through the course of the day. This was _necessary_ in order for him to go down in history as the most intelligent human being who has ever _lived._ If you want to follow _his_ example, emulate his _intelligence_ and recognize the value of _your_ sleep. You would have to be an idiot _not_ to.
Second, every single animal the human race has ever studied has had a daily period of dormancy the like of which human beings, and animals closely related to us would classify as sleep. The need for this is obviously something we inherited from a prehistoric ancestor we have in common with _all_ of them. Why has it become so ubiquitous? It must give an animal that has this need and is able to meet it an overwhelming advantage, somehow, over animals that are otherwise identical but _don't_ have it. It is a competitive advantage. Learn the lesson.
Third, once in a while, a human being stops sleeping. This does _not_ coincide with the loss of the _need_ for sleep. It coincides with the loss of the ability to _meet_ this need. It's called Fatal Familial Insomnia. After first noticing the symptoms, one's abilities rapidly decline until one is unable to function, but _also_ still unable to sleep. One is unable to do much of _anything_ until one dies, about eight to nine miserable months later.
Tony, do _not_ neglect your sleep.

From my experience, most men are afraid to admit to having anxiety because of two things. General society tends to make men to be super strong in all aspects. Then there is the feminist movement that if a man shows anything that can be translated as weakness, then he is seen as weak and useless and unworthy of anything. Men in general do share many attributes that women have. We are both human after all. But society tends to see males as superior and the feminist movement will exploit any weakness males have to make them seem as the weaker sex. I honestly believe that both sexes are important. After all, it takes a male and female to create life, to continue our species I guess.

I can definitely see how especially a big comics fan would be disappointed by the Mandarin twist! But the movie is so good in spite of it

This movie just spat on everything The Mandarin was all about and what is supposed to be about. Imagine being a fan of the comics and knowing what's coming when it was announced that The Mandarin is gonna be the villain of the 3rd Iron Man movie, you were expecting an epic showdown knowing the history between these two characters...but then they showed you this phony twist of a villian

Cristy , there is a short sequel to this called , All Hail The King, that was on one of the dvds special features, back when dvds had special features, then they started putting the special features only on the blu rays, and before they could fit everything onto one disc, so i think it was to make more money or something anyway, in the comic books , and in the 1960s Iron Man cartoon, the Mandarin was Iron Man's main enemy he was a chinese archaelogist that found a cave in china and in it , an ancient alien space ship with a robot dragon inside that was thousands of years old, and on it's claws were ten human sized finger rings that each had a different alien language symbol on it. and each ring had a different power ray , like one had a freeze ray and one a lightning blast power and one a black hole ? power, i forget, but if you watch that cartoon, you can see how powerful the real mandarin is, they wasted the name on this movie, and i didn't like that they did that, we could have had a more epic movie if they used the mandarin like he was in the comic books. i said on youtube that what, is the Black Panther not going to be from Africa? because they were afraid to make the Mandarin Chinese?

Because Marvel made the Mandarin a stereotypical Fu Manchu villain. They wanted to avoid perpetuating racial stereotypes.

This went from being my least favorite Iron Man movie to being my favorite because it advances the character of Tony Stark. What most people don't realize is Tony Stark is probably the least likable Marvel character in the comics. He is just an ass to all his friends and other heroes. Tony tends to make the wrong choice all the time before he makes the right choice. That is just how his character was written. He is a bastard that just is horrible of a human being that finds his way to be a hero.
John Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. reserved the right to develop the character of Tony Stark outside of the comic story. The end of this movie the the growth of Tony Stark. He has to destroy all the suits because they don't matter. He can always build more because "He is Iron Man!" So from movie one he was the rich asshole that did not care about people to movie two thinking he is going to be the good guy to save the world to movie three realizing he is just a man with skills. He is Iron Man. This is a much better story than the comics Tony Stark who is a drug abuser, alcoholic, mad man and even turns into a villain before he becomes a government tool. The Iron Man story is really classic to Marvel comics and the MCU did a good job making him the story that everything tends to revolve around.
