I have the excact same engine. Got it at a train show for $4. The light on the cab roof flashes when i run it and flashes faster when it runs faster. It was hard to get running but thanks to some cleaning and lubricating i got it running alot better.
I had this same engine it was a flashing light unfortunately the light was over bright flash without a resistor it blew out after 24 hours! I had to return it where I purchased it! 😭
Man i miss my old train collection i had some ahm locos and an athern dcc ready cnw sw1500 switcher. Started a new collection yesterday at the local train show got an athern or what i think is athern cnw SD40-2 a pensy Tuscan red mantua/tyco f7 and some lifelike pensylvania Tuscan red passenger cars.
Hi Harrison, the loco in question might be a EMD non -dynamic brake GP-7. Was looking on the fallen flags site for photos and found a picture similar to your loco with a road number of 2653. Just one number short from the one you have. 😉
I'm actually working on one of these Rn. I'm adding brass details and a full new drive in the loco. Along with scratchbuilt pilots and body mounted couplers. I'm adding lots of weight because I want it for road switching duty on my club layout.
That is the EXACT wiring, drivetrain, and motor as my bachmann gp18, oddly my most reliable and strongest engine. I know it's a bachmann because it says it on the chassis. The only difference is no top light.
Super. The GP-7 and the early and mid production GP-9 had four small cooling fans on top, and late GP-9 and GP-18 models had two large cooling fans, and came with or without dynamic brakes. They market this as a GP-18, but it could also pass as a late GP-9, or a Geep that has been rebuilt with two large cooling fans. 💙 T.E.N.
I have an AHM engine, imported from Yugoslavia. I have the same problem with it going then stalling. And sometimes the light works and sometimes it doesn't, so I'm wondering if it's the motor or the connection or the wheels.

I think it's all sorts of things, I think as companies went defunct to got bought out, their designs got passed on because this happens to be the same motor RSO and Life-Like used on some of their units.
SMT Mainline hmm weird... Ok I guess that would sum it up. When I bought an engine for a dollar the guy said it didn’t work at all I cleaned the commutator and it goes super fast.
Sounds like ether one of the two contacts isn't working or missing, if the motor hums that probably means something is in the gear box that shouldn't be.

That light is a factory option. There should be a mechanism on the truck to make it blink.

I believe the High Nose GP-9 has those vents that stick out on the top in the middle of the sides

I didn't, something was shorting in the motor and then it changed.

If it still uses the metal contact bar, you should solder some wires in it’s place. I’ll bet there is a TH-cam video of that.
