I like that when the narrator (brilliant btw) says that Jesse's granulated eyelids causes him to blink more often than not, and in the shot Jesse doesn't blink, it's like a mini version of the film - what you hear and what you experience are two different things sometimes, about a person.
I absolutely adore this movie, such a poetic and beautifully made film. It got overshadowed by No Country and There Will Be Blood unfortunately but those are wonderful movies as well. 2007 was a strong year for cinema. Very rare for so many masterfully crafted pieces to all end up in the same movie, the score and the cinematography in particular for me in this.

It was a time when I was exploring both my Missouri ancestry and my grandfather, a forgotten poet. This movie came to me like a message to forge forward with my book about the forgotten Missouri poet because no other word describes this film like "poetry." It has the name of a ballad, but it unravels like a poem.
This movie is such a masterpiece. Cinematography, filming, script, acting, directing, music. It's one of the few movies that I would classify as perfect.
This movie is really incredible. It takes it’s time and tells a real story. Brad executed a perfect Jesse. I actually know someone exactly like this. Was also an outlaw, very paranoid, beyond anything you’ve ever known, quiet, exacting, anxious but calm. Brad nailed it. A very troubled person still wanting to use the small part of his heart he’s got left but wracked with guilt, regret and an incredible fear that he’s gone too far in being bad.
You’ll never convince me that Casey Affleck wasn’t robbed of an Oscar for this role. Javier Bardem was iconic in his own right, but the emotional range in his performance was much less demanding than Affleck’s. The best work of his career.

The film hit me at the right time: it was fall in Minnesota. The almost spooky teaser trailer. I'd sit by the fire pit at night smoking a cigar and reading the book. I went down to Northfield, MN to attend the reenacting of "The Defeat of Jesse James." The music. Brad's look. The cinematography. I remember people sitting in front of me in the theatre getting up and leaving halfway through (expecting a Brad Pitt, shoot 'em up western, I'm guessing, which is so not what the film is). I PRAY for the day the director's cut is made available.
As you pointed out, one of the things that really surprised me was how powerful the post-assassination parts of the movie were. I thought we would get little beyond a text crawl explaining what happened to Bob following Jesse's death. Instead we got an incredibly moving and emotional look at his descent in the following months.
It's my favourite film of all time. The period dialogue, the hand made lenses, the beautiful cinematography, the wonderful soundtrack, the brilliant acting, the perfect pacing, and the tradegy of it all. It truly is an incredible film, and I wouldn't change a single thing about it. I'm also very privileged to live where it was filmed.
The Jesse death scene is one of the most powerful scene I have seen in a long time. The sound of the wind rustling through the wheat fields, the background score as soon as JJ turns towards the photo and Brad Pitt's acting, everything about it is perfect. Pitt really give one of the best performances of the generation over here. His eyes alone tells the whole story. Amazing!!

I saw this movie many years ago and was floored as it was the first movie I had ever seen where every minute of footage had purpose and intent. I don’t think any other movie has ever been able to accomplish this feat. My favorite shot in the opening scene is Bob Ford staring at Jesse, and the foreshadowing shot of Jesse “marked” with a tree branch crossing the frame! This movie is incredibly overlooked, less respected and sits in the shadows of one of the best films ever created in cinema!

This video is a poem about a poem. 4:46 Bob goes over to join them. They get up and leave. Their leaving has nothing to do with him. He does not exist to them. They just happened to get up when he sat down. What they do has nothing to do with him, but oh, how he wishes it did. He would rather they got up because of him than that he was not involved at all. He doesn't exist to them, so he feels like he doesn't exist at all.

Ian Curtis of Joy Division once said that he was hypnotised by Apocalypse Now, to the point where he couldn't take his eyes off the screen. I feel that way about The Assassination of Jesse James. Funnily enough, I remember that the film I thought of the most as I watched Jesse James was Apocalypse Now. The visuals in both are enough to get lost in, to the point where I can watch either film with the volume turned down and still feel immersed. I think it's especially true of this, though; some of the shots are breathtaking.

A beautiful discussion…on an equally beautiful -if enigmatic- film. Enigmatic. Prefect word for the real world characters….and 150+ years later, the actors who played them. When I first saw this film? I asked my wife for Christmas, the CD of both the film, and the soundtrack. I never tire of watching and listening.
Nick Cave and Warren Ellis's score for this is my favorite instrumental soundtrack of all time. It's insane how Brad Pitt disappears into this role, despite being the epitome of a recognizable movie star and not altering his normal appearance much. It took me days after first seeing this movie to come up with the words to describe it; 2006 and 2007 were something else.
Favorite film of all time. Your analysis is excellent and very much appreciated in a media landscape that doesn't give this film anywhere near its due. I highly recommend reading the book of the same title by Ron Hansen that Dominik adapted his screenplay from; it really enriches rewatches, and I can't believe how nobody talks about how brilliantly this film adapts the novel while also offering something transcendent and new.

I still vividly remember seeing this masterpiece in the cinema with my dad on its release day in 2007, one year before he committed suicide. Still to this day it's the most haunting and masterful movie I've ever seen

One of the things I loved about this film is the lack of the Stetson. The Stetson-wearing cowboy (as cool as it looks) is a hollywood creation. The Derby hat, was the most popular hat worn in the west at the time. At any rate, this is my second favorite western of all time.

I had a friend just like Robert Ford. That's why this movie resonates with me so much. He went through four stages of obsession: 1. Admiration, in which he flattered me and told me how cool I was and how everything I did was awesome. 2. Emulation, in which he started to copy me: my likes and dislikes, hobbies, life philosophies, dreams. He began to dress like me, to speak like me, to parrot my own words back to me a week after I said them as though those words were his own. It was as though he wanted to replace his personality with mine. 3. Disillusionment, because despite acting like me, he couldn't achieve the same outcomes I did. 4. Destruction, in which he tried to pull me down, belittle me, damage my reputation, tear down my achievements and prove that he was better than me. I think he felt very small and thought being me would make him feel bigger. When it didn't, he decided the only way to make himself feel big was to make me small instead, thereby destroying the one he had only recently seen as a hero. At the end, I think he genuinely hated me because he couldn't be me. He started to really creep me out so I had to cut him loose. When I saw this movie it brought it all back. I think I had a lucky escape.

I've been trying to watch this movie since it came out and finally was able to this week! I was not disappointed. All the expectations i had of this movie were met and satisfied beyond my thoughts. What a masterclass in acting from Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck and Sam Rockwell.

My favorite Westerns: 1. Unforgiven- deconstructs the genre perfectly- Clint Eastwood's well deserved triumph. 2. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - an introspective, spiritual work of art, deconstructs the obsessively unhealthy flipsides of fame-seeking and regret 3. True Grit by the Coens- I just love this film. I rewatch it a lot 4. The Good the Bad and the Ugly- always fun to watch 5. High Noon- Real time suspense, a brilliant script, Gary Cooper and the beautiful Grace Kelly.
I've always thought that sometimes the person and the personality. Becomes confusing for some people. Not realizing they're actually fascinated more with the idea of them. Than the reality of the actual person. Then as mentioned, become disillusioned when confronted with it. This was a sad, dark, and eerie movie. That I dwelled on for quite a while. But I like movies that are thought provoking.
How good are the 2main actors ,, especially Casey Affleck ,,superb portrayal ,,. The actual shooting of Jesse scene is absolutely masterful ,,once Bob realises Jesse has now seen newspaper story about Dick Liddell ,he now 100% certain that Jesse knows about his own (bob's) betrayal . The moments leading up to films climax ie the picture dusting &shooting wonderfully done ,,we only need look into Afkecks eyes to witness his horror , fear and realisation that he must shoot him Now !. In a:-way it reminded me of Pacino's famous Godfather scene where he about shoot Sollozo and McCluskey. All the about the Eyes ,,I guess this is what separates good actors from Great ones ,they can express emotions so well and without saying a word .
I completely agree, in my opinion Casey Affleck is one of the greatest and most underrated actors working today. He steals the show in almost every role with his nuanced and minimalist acting.
the film is perfect the ending is for grown ups whereas the beginning for kids, you don't need to know what really happened, cos it's not even really what happened, its a legend. the sobering truth of the ending is for the ears of sleeping children, where as the magic is in the the medium, the dirt on the lense was like the cat hair that predicts the future like one of jesse's superstitions. The mystery of what jessy knew and didn't know, reflects the mystique of a contemporary celebrity like brad pitt himself who can't possibly live up to the expectations of the fans who think he's god tier. The film addresses the mediums in which this magical thinking takes places and accentuates it. Compare this to slow west or day of the dog, two contemporary cowboy films released since this one, where the motivating factors for the characters are romance and family relationships, pitted against a cut throat world. Those films dont quite come so close to this one, despite having better pacing by the ending, because at theire core the motivating themes of romance and inter personal drama are not being explored in the mis en scene or the camera, the materials, only in the performance. And the medium doesnt exactly lend it self to those films as well as it does disillusionment. There is just something so piercing about a film that is able to do what the assination of jesse james did

How were you able to use footage from the film without being blocked by TH-cam?
I had to submit a fair use counterclaim as an educational/critique video, and the rest was up to the copyright holders. You most likely won't be able to monetize the video but at least you'll be able to publish it... That's the case for me. Hope this helps!
Its a beautiful movie. It reminds us that the small players that surrounded these historical figures can be more interesting (and tragic) than historical figure themselves. I relate with Bob much more than i do Jesse. 2) Soundtrack was money 3) Casey was excellent and should have won academy award or something
I feel sorry for any movie fan who has not seen this. Three great movies in one year, all with similar overtones and audiences (Jesse James, No Country, and Will Be Blood) was unfortunate. I think all 3 are great, and THWB is probably the best, but this one is definitely next in my opinion.
One of the best cinematic lineups of any year, for sure. Based on filmmaking alone, it's hard to say which is the 'best', but probably There Will Be Blood. Personally though, this one is probably my favorite of the three. If you haven't seen Phantom Thread I would also highly recommend it. Probably my favorite PTA film, and perhaps even my favorite Daniel Day-Lewis performance.
That’s an interesting thought. I thought the blurred edges were to duplicate (or simulate) the look of photos from that era. The narrator said the blurred edges looked like they were showing how time passes and how the memories from the past are often lost or forgotten.
There was a scene that didn't make it into the film, after Jesse is dead, Bob would want to travel and visit the families of the people Jesse killed and introduce himself as the man who killed Jesse James. He comes to the grave of Jesse James and finds on his tombstone it reads below his epitaph “Murdered by a traitor and a coward whose name is not worthy to appear here.” All Bob wanted was to be remembered, to have his name be famous like Jesse James. Even as Jesse's final words would be told amongst people and they would read into its possible meaning, Bob couldn't even manage to have any last words, lest any worth remembering.
🤣 That part kills me every time... only to be creeped out the next second, all over again. One of the great rewatches of all time. An absolute masterpiece!

Agreed. I have no love for either of the Afflecks, but he nailed this role! He was absolutely robbed of the recognition for it.

Another 2007 film that gets overlooked is American Gangster. Along with 2007, the years 1994 and 1999 are right up there for cinema.

I still vividly remember seeing this masterpiece in the cinema with my dad on its release day in 2007, one year before he committed suicide. Still to this day it's the most haunting and masterful movie I've ever seen
Tried showing this movie to my boyfriend and he couldnt keep his eyes open and just didnt get the movie at all. I was legit pissed off lol
It's a beautiful film, but it requires attention to detail and the slow pacing is such that late night viewing when tired isn't recommended.
Took me 2 times to watch the movie, think I watched like the first hour and didn't pick it up for years until I saw scenes on TH-cam and decided to rewatch and I'm glad I did
Time to move on? 😂 When my ex admitted to hating Neil Young and Bob Dylan, I knew our days were numbered.

One of the things I loved about this film is the lack of the Stetson. The Stetson-wearing cowboy (as cool as it looks) is a hollywood creation. The Derby hat, was the most popular hat worn in the west at the time.
At any rate, this is my second favorite western of all time.

I had a friend just like Robert Ford. That's why this movie resonates with me so much. He went through four stages of obsession:
1. Admiration, in which he flattered me and told me how cool I was and how everything I did was awesome.
2. Emulation, in which he started to copy me: my likes and dislikes, hobbies, life philosophies, dreams. He began to dress like me, to speak like me, to parrot my own words back to me a week after I said them as though those words were his own. It was as though he wanted to replace his personality with mine.
3. Disillusionment, because despite acting like me, he couldn't achieve the same outcomes I did.
4. Destruction, in which he tried to pull me down, belittle me, damage my reputation, tear down my achievements and prove that he was better than me.
I think he felt very small and thought being me would make him feel bigger. When it didn't, he decided the only way to make himself feel big was to make me small instead, thereby destroying the one he had only recently seen as a hero.
At the end, I think he genuinely hated me because he couldn't be me. He started to really creep me out so I had to cut him loose. When I saw this movie it brought it all back. I think I had a lucky escape.
You’re blessed to be alive. My little brother was like that. One day I was just waiting for the bullet. Instead, I woke up one day, and he was gone. Clothes & all. That was 4 years ago.

I've been trying to watch this movie since it came out and finally was able to this week!
I was not disappointed. All the expectations i had of this movie were met and satisfied beyond my thoughts.
What a masterclass in acting from Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck and Sam Rockwell.

1. Unforgiven- deconstructs the genre perfectly- Clint Eastwood's well deserved triumph.
2. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - an introspective, spiritual work of art, deconstructs the obsessively unhealthy flipsides of fame-seeking and regret
3. True Grit by the Coens- I just love this film. I rewatch it a lot
4. The Good the Bad and the Ugly- always fun to watch
5. High Noon- Real time suspense, a brilliant script, Gary Cooper and the beautiful Grace Kelly.

I remember never hearing about it then one day coming across it and was like hey Brad Pitt's in it why not? And damn I was impressed
I've always thought that sometimes the person and the personality. Becomes confusing for some people. Not realizing they're actually fascinated more with the idea of them. Than the reality of the actual person. Then as mentioned, become disillusioned when confronted with it. This was a sad, dark, and eerie movie. That I dwelled on for quite a while. But I like movies that are thought provoking.

This is the Blade Runner of Westerns. Ignored and overlooked at release only to gain in acclaim over time.
How good are the 2main actors ,, especially Casey Affleck ,,superb portrayal ,,.
The actual shooting of Jesse scene is absolutely masterful ,,once Bob realises Jesse has now seen newspaper story about Dick Liddell ,he now 100% certain that Jesse knows about his own (bob's) betrayal .
The moments leading up to films climax ie the picture dusting &shooting wonderfully done ,,we only need look into Afkecks eyes to witness his horror , fear and realisation that he must shoot him Now !.
In a:-way it reminded me of Pacino's famous Godfather scene where he about shoot Sollozo and McCluskey.
All the about the Eyes ,,I guess this is what separates good actors from Great ones ,they can express emotions so well and without saying a word .
I completely agree, in my opinion Casey Affleck is one of the greatest and most underrated actors working today. He steals the show in almost every role with his nuanced and minimalist acting.

the film is perfect the ending is for grown ups whereas the beginning for kids, you don't need to know what really happened, cos it's not even really what happened, its a legend. the sobering truth of the ending is for the ears of sleeping children, where as the magic is in the the medium, the dirt on the lense was like the cat hair that predicts the future like one of jesse's superstitions. The mystery of what jessy knew and didn't know, reflects the mystique of a contemporary celebrity like brad pitt himself who can't possibly live up to the expectations of the fans who think he's god tier. The film addresses the mediums in which this magical thinking takes places and accentuates it. Compare this to slow west or day of the dog, two contemporary cowboy films released since this one, where the motivating factors for the characters are romance and family relationships, pitted against a cut throat world. Those films dont quite come so close to this one, despite having better pacing by the ending, because at theire core the motivating themes of romance and inter personal drama are not being explored in the mis en scene or the camera, the materials, only in the performance. And the medium doesnt exactly lend it self to those films as well as it does disillusionment. There is just something so piercing about a film that is able to do what the assination of jesse james did
you could almost turn the sound off in jessie james and be just as sure of what you saw and equally bewildered

How were you able to use footage from the film without being blocked by TH-cam?
I had to submit a fair use counterclaim as an educational/critique video, and the rest was up to the copyright holders. You most likely won't be able to monetize the video but at least you'll be able to publish it... That's the case for me. Hope this helps!

Its a beautiful movie. It reminds us that the small players that surrounded these historical figures can be more interesting (and tragic) than historical figure themselves.

I feel sorry for any movie fan who has not seen this. Three great movies in one year, all with similar overtones and audiences (Jesse James, No Country, and Will Be Blood) was unfortunate. I think all 3 are great, and THWB is probably the best, but this one is definitely next in my opinion.
One of the best cinematic lineups of any year, for sure. Based on filmmaking alone, it's hard to say which is the 'best', but probably There Will Be Blood. Personally though, this one is probably my favorite of the three.
If you haven't seen Phantom Thread I would also highly recommend it. Probably my favorite PTA film, and perhaps even my favorite Daniel Day-Lewis performance.

I always thought the blurrs where to visualize Jesse's eyesight
That’s an interesting thought.
I thought the blurred edges were to duplicate (or simulate) the look of photos from that era.
The narrator said the blurred edges looked like they were showing how time passes and how the memories from the past are often lost or forgotten.
There was a scene that didn't make it into the film, after Jesse is dead, Bob would want to travel and visit the families of the people Jesse killed and introduce himself as the man who killed Jesse James.
He comes to the grave of Jesse James and finds on his tombstone it reads below his epitaph “Murdered by a traitor and a coward whose name is not worthy to appear here.”
All Bob wanted was to be remembered, to have his name be famous like Jesse James. Even as Jesse's final words would be told amongst people and they would read into its possible meaning, Bob couldn't even manage to have any last words, lest any worth remembering.
It's a beautiful film.
