    So glad you did this great review. I’ve been curious about it but as you said, reviews are scarce. Great job. I love your reviews.

    The Ecridor has a longer and therefore more comfortable grip section than the 849. The biggest difference is the nib which on the 849 feels a bit like tin plate. Personally I like to roll the cap and barrel in my hand as a nice way of stress relief.

      @Scrivelynotes  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. Agree on what you say about the nib. I also found myself playing around with the cap :-)

    Thank you, Scrively. I thought this was a beautiful design and well worth £145. For me, the pen just seems to ooze quality. The lack of visual alignment between the cap and barrel, which you highlighted, would not bother me. However, I did not like the area of the cap intended for engraving. I would have preferred the finish to continue the whole length of the cap, as you stated. On the whole, a very impressive pen both in looks and the writing quality. Thank you for the review.

    I got the cheaper, aluminum version: the caran d'ache 849. It's exactly the same except it's matte black and all aluminum

    also it comes with pencil type color, which is much attractive to me

    Great video. Not a pen for me, I'm not so keen on metal pens.
    That swivelling top says that there are no 'o' ring cap seal to me. I would be concerned that it would dry out.
    Yes, no engraving for me either. When I ordered a Conway Stewart and asked for it not to be engraved there was a moment of silence on the phone 😂
    A well done thorough going review as always.
    Thank you. :)

      Thanks, Kevin! I am normally also not one for metal pens, but I do quite like this one. At least it will go into my personal collection. Also, I never had any issues with it drying out.

      @@Scrivelynotes Oh, it's probably just one of my prejudices. They get under my feet from time to time.
      After all, I really do enjoy my Diplomat A2 Excellence pens...especially the nibs.
      Bother, caught myself out again. LOL

    Caran d'Ache feet is ver y very well made. Ecridor modelo don't have gold sterling nib, it's a steel rodium nib.

  • @andrewtongue7084
    @andrewtongue7084 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't know, Michael, somehow, I would have expected more from this Swiss manufacturer: That swivelling cap would drive me insane, & the fact (as you asserted, most emphatically) that the nib does not align squarely with the flat of the (hexagon) side, is just sloppy. I cannot say that I am overly enamoured with the "retro" finish, either; certainly, Caran d'Ache have a reputation for fine writing nibs, & that does not disappoint. Overall, I really would have to think twice about any prospective purchase for this instrument - I don't feel it's worth the moneys..
    Thank you, as always, for a very fine overview :)

      Yeah, you are right. This pen really didn't impress me all too much as well.

      @@Scrivelynotes THanks for the review. VEry good. I have the pen and I love it. I have not noticed the misalignment of the nib and hexagon body until watching your review! I must say that I think the misalignment is on purpose. I hold the pen by hexagon body and in that situation the nib is in correct position on the paper. If it was aligned it would be under an angle impossible to write.

    Hexagonal shape as it's six not eight.

      Haha. Ya. Thanks. I got that corrected in the review of the 849 and the FC Ondoro as well, I think :-). I seem to never get this right. Nevermind :-).

    Interesting to see you describe this as an iconic pen. In 15 years of fountain years collecting I have never heard of it. I've actually never seen any Caran D'ache in person besides the 849 ballpoint.

    • @Scrivelynotes
      @Scrivelynotes  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, I do think that this pen is iconic - implicitly also through the ballpoint, whose base-design essentially is the same.

    • @TheRacerRich

      It must be that they just aren't marketed as much in the USA as they are in other places. Our pen market I think is different from a lot of Europe in that most people under the age of 40 have never used a fountain pen in their lives here.

    • @Scrivelynotes
      @Scrivelynotes  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There may very well be something to this, yes

    • @chirantanmukherji640
      @chirantanmukherji640 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TheRacerRich I have the Caran D'Ache Ecridor Variation Fountain Pen and by the way I own pens like Visconti, the Waterman Carene, TWSBI and let me tell you the Caran D'Ache possibly is a number 1 or 2. This writes like butter, and it is iconic all throughout Europe. Agree it may not have an active market in US but that way many top brands in Europe like to market more in Europe. Also, am eyening an ST Dupont LineD and a Sailor😊

    If you have a problem with the cap not always aligning with the barrel, that is likely a sign of Obsessive-Compulsive Distorder (OCD).

      It can also be a sign of paying attention to detail. Perhaps you can share your medical degree with us so we can verify your status. Did you know that diagnosing people without proper credentials is a sign of being an asshole?
