'Four-Season Flowers,' a traditional Chinese folk song from the 1940s, has many renditions on TH-cam. Sarah Chen's is the best. The song expresses a young woman's first love as she invites the young man she loves on a flower-watching trip with her in each season. Renowned 20th-century folk composer Wang Luobin created the basic form of this song in the 1940s, based on Qinghai folk songs about flowers, a metaphor for girls.
This is everybody's and nobody's song. Sarah Chen's rendition was found in her 1985 New Year's Special, an obscure album initially with limited access. Chen's version was the least attention-seeking: she did not perform in a high key, change tempo, or draw long notes. But in her calm performance, she accurately captured the young woman's wish to both show and hide her love. This is one of our favorite Sarah Chen songs and the best rendition of 'Four-Season Flowers.'
Chen performed this song around the same time as her cover of 'Diamonds and Rust.' It is striking how she succeeded with both songs, despite the dramatic differences in the emotions required. In 'Diamonds and Rust,' she expressed, in English, the aged love of an older woman from Western culture, reminiscing about a lover from 10 years ago. In 'Four-Season Flowers,' Chen conveyed, in Chinese, the first love of a young woman from traditional Chinese culture. These songs were performed before Chen received widespread recognition, even predating her first 'Best Female Singer' award. Her talent was fully on display, clearly debunking the 'transformation' theories from her Rock Records period.

The best video of Chinese classics, with the meaning in English which I find it useful and appreciates more. Good voice and orchestra arrangement. Started with her rendition of Diamond and Rust in English and was bowled over.
