  • (Lyrics in CC).
[Abstract] Sarah Chen left the music industry without saying good-bye, but in her 1995 album "Forever, Sarah," she sang "Autumn Farewell" with an unmatched depth of emotion. It was her silent farewell to her fans, career, and a part of herself. "Autumn Farewell," the most Sarah-like of Sarah Chen songs, is our autumn blessing to you.
The 1995 version of "Autumn Farewell" was Chen's second recording; the original was in her 1980 album "Road Home". At 21, she had already spent several years in the industry, endured hardships without scoring her first big hit, and faced the danger of fading away. Her bright, golden voice was awkward for the melancholy of "Autumn Farewell." Fifteen years later, her more mature and soothing voice was a perfect match for the song.
The lyrics of "Autumn Farewell" followed a structure of Song Dynasty poetry, expressing a thousand unspoken words in just a few characters, "Hiding sorrow, feigning a smile." Who hasn't experienced the sorrow of parting, or bidding farewell to one's youthful past? Every note, every line, and every word of Sarah Chen's strikes your heart, while her deep emotion and soothing voice smooth over your pain. What kind of magic is this? How deep must her emotions be? To be honest, I have listened to "Autumn Farewell" more times than the combined number of times I've listened to "Dream to Awakening," "Red Dust," and "The Mundane World," yet each time it still fills my heart.
Sarah Chen is irreplaceable because no one else has her unique experience and emotional attachment to music. From singing adult songs as a child, she paid a steep price for her music, and by the time she finally broke through in 1982 with "Sunset Follows Me Home", she had been in the industry for over a decade, recording over 10 albums and 100+ songs. Later, her successful work at EMI was abruptly interrupted. Although she performed major hits after joining Rock Records, her contribution was misattributed to others and she fell gravely ill from a weight-loss episode - for music. Music was Sarah Chen's refuge, but it was also the source of her suffering. As she bid final farewell to music, only she could truly understand the helplessness, love, and sorrow in her songs.
When we used advanced AI to identify Sarah Chen's farewell album, LLM4 gave two different answers on two occasions: the 1995 "Forever, Sarah" and 1986 "Love (Black Hair Turns White)," which makes sense. Sarah Chen was said to have considered retiring in 1986 after the interruption of her work at EMI. This would have made "Love" her farewell album. If Sarah had retired, her achievements would have been fewer, the world would have missed out on many major Mandopop hits, but Sarah also wouldn't have endured the later suffering. To quote Sarah Chen from her 1992 Voice of Chinese American interview, "You win some, you lose some." Plus, life has but one path, there’s no looking back.
The music we enjoy today is built on Sarah Chen's sacrifices. It's up to us to honor her legacy, preserve and treasure her work, and uphold her good image. It's a tribute to Sarah every time you listen to her songs. Thank you for entering the Sarah Chen Memory Gate.
