From what I've read it was Eddie Olmos who suggested this mantra for the theme tune for BSG. It was so for the UK from season 1 onwards. The suits in the US bottled it because it was "Too weird" for season 1 in the US but adopted it for season 2 when they saw is was popular. I bought the complete box set for BSG in blu-ray only to discover that season 1 has the US theme. It quite spolied my day and I never play it, instead playing my UK version on DVD.
The wonderful theme song actually increases the coolness and mystery of BSG by NOT being "Greek" ... by hinting that human religion was MORE than the "greek" aspects ... but mostly all we're shown are the "greek" aspects, yes. No, Cylon Six didn't 'plan or instigate' their jihad. :) The BSG series is spooky and beautiful in how it reveals that they were ALL pawns in a cosmic epic: Cavil was as much a pawn in unfolding the Divine scheme as everyone else was.
The Divine Light was the central theme of Rg Veda - usually symbolized as Agni - the Divine Fire withing our 'hearts'. The 'arya' of Rg Veda was actually one who unceasingly pursues the LIght. The metaphorical symbolism of Rg Veda became conceptualized in the Upanisads [which as the likes of Joseph Campbell and Thomas McEvilley have noted was actually the world's first true conceptual Philosophy] where the Light became the cit (Pure Consciousness) or the Atman [the impersonal consciousness/spirit within us which is one with the universal/cosmic consciousness/spirit (Brahman) - the famous Doctrine of Atman/Brahman - which is the central core of all Hindu Philosophy. The Upanisads also asserted that the Atman is also the Prana [life energy] into which the egoic consciousness dissolves in Dreamless Sleep and in Death. Lifelong Advaita Vedanta advocate Erwin Schrodinger called the doctrine of Atman-Brahman the Grandest thought ever put forward by humans. In fact, it is not a mere 'thought' but a fact of mystical realization that has been confirmed in many other traditions and by modern psychedelic researchers using LSD etc. I have actually identified the physical correlate of this Inner (Divine) Light of Pure Consciousness with the brainwaves of the Reticular Activating System (RAS) - the brainwaves from the brainstem Reticular Formation which constantly flow throughout the whole brain underlying all other brainwave activity. The cessation of the RAS is what constitutes braindeath. The phenomenological knowledge from the most authoritative Hindu and Buddhist yogic traditions as well as knowedge from Western esoteric and modern phenomenology fit perfectly with this correlation - as you can see in my book 'The Brainstem Brainwaves of Atman-Brahman: The Synthesis of Science and Spirituality'.
I love this version of the song. It's amazing! Just saw the film last night and was blown away. I thought watching Caprica for background was good, but The Plan sheds light on so many things that happen during the series!! :P
There is a vedic concept of multiverse. Earth(bhu), bhuvah (space 1), swaha(space 2) are 3 of them. Om is like the total vibration or sound of the universe. So the hymn begins by naming them.
The main part of "Apocalypse", the nuking theme, is at 1:25 of this song, just with the mantra over it. The film had an extended version of the theme with the bridge (at 2:41) played several times. I hope the soundtrack has the whole version of Apocalypse as it appeared on the film, as well as this one.
This song is available on piratebay. The movie was really powerful, much more so than I expected. BSG will always be one of the best science fiction shows ever produced.
@uuu64 To be fair, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" I felt the ending was probably as strong as they could make it... they did paint themselves into a corner, in a sense, with the various head-people. But at the same time, it's usually the case that questions are more interesting than answers. IMO they did a fairly good job tying up the questions they could, but at least still leaving it fairly open.
Starbuck was an Angel not a Ghost. We saw an Angel Blazing with the Light of God. Thus shall it come to pass. A dying leader will know the truth of the Opera House. The missing Three will give you the Five who come from the home of the Thirteenth. You are the harbinger of death, Kara Thrace. You will lead them all to their end. End of line.
@lykan21 Actually, I do remember Roslyn having those visions and yes, they were mystical, but the part about Starbuck coming back as an angel was really pushing it. But introspective, I now understand that it is open to interpretation, so anyone can think and decide for themselves and I respect the show's writers for that. :)
@uuu64 You make a good point about the possibility of BSG being fantasy as opposed to sci-fi because of those virtual beings and Starbuck coming back as an angel. WTF?!? This show has always prided itself on its emphasis on gritty realism and hard sci-fi. But with all these virtual beings popping up, as well as Starbuck returning as an angel was getting ridiculous. But I came up with a plausible explanation: after Starbuck "die" everybody was smoking pot and hallucinated that she came back. LOL!
@ Amitshetty1986: Thank you. I have always loved the opening track to BSG (new) but have never admitted it :) Now I don't feel so bad when I listen to it and get a lump in my throat :D
I can't believe some did not enjoy this movie. I liked that they opened up the Simon model character and that not all his model were cold and void of of human emotions. I am surprised of the T&A this movie has now I can't show this to my 12 yrd cousin.
Oh God! Thou art the Giver of Life, Remover of pain and sorrow, The Bestower of happiness, Oh! Creator of the Universe, May we receive thy supreme sin-destroying light, May Thou guide our intellect in the right direction.
@ncs2000 actually after looking at a much larger picture, it is a Six. Her hair looked extremely similar to D'anna (Three), which was curled the same way and the same color.
Here's the kicker. All humans came from Kobol, so all pre-cylons. Humans + cylons can produce babies. Babies that are both human and cylon. Now, imagine on Kobol the 13th tribe and the humans there frakked and had kids. Which means that quite a few humans on the 12 colonies have a distant, distant cylon potential bloodline. The song is indeed sung in Sanskrit. But the lyrics itself is the Gayatri Mantra, a highly revered prayer mantra in Hinduism. Random fact of the day for all. =D
I just noticed....there's no Judas figure in this? It should be Baltar, but he's in the same place as John (Mary Magdelen for the Da Vinci Coders out there). There's only the empty cup in his place. Even after all these years, it still makes me wonder...

Well, I can't comment on the quality of their Sanskrit (hey, their Jimi Hendrix wasn't all that great either, except as a mindblower) ... but it's a haunting song, a cultural tribute to Sanskrit at least -- and EERIE as hell, when you fuse it with the idea of the Cylons being off on their religious jihad against God's fallen humans (or, their own misguided jihad in God's name. Funny how becoming HUMAN meant falling into the same human errors and pits, wasn't it?)! BSG was genius, imo.
The "Apocalypse" theme in the beginning, and this closing theme, might be Bear McCreary's finest work on the series. Unfortunately, it was the best thing about "The Plan."

I usually try not to think about how movies could have been better, but in this case I think the writers chose the wrong time period to tell the story. Before the attack there is still a story to tell, where as the events after the miniseries have already been seen from two angles. (Galactica and Pegasus.) But that's okay. It was fun to watch.
Wait, why was his comment downvoted - and how is that racist? This isn't Latin. As far as I'm aware, this /is/ Hindi based on Sanskrit writings. It's the gayatri mantra, a highly revered mantra based on a verse from a hymn in the Rigveda.

I usually try not to think about how movies could have been better, but in this case I think the writers chose the wrong time period to tell the story.
