Dat glorious cape physics, worth buying just for that
I bought the game for 23$... Super worth-it!
The game is awesome!
I love the humor.
It's a good light-hearted game, in a time where there aren't many games like that.
I never played the past King's Quest games... But I might...
Though not my favourite, this was the first adventure game series I ever played, thought me english before any education, book or even cartoon did, and kickstarted my journey through many a great title in the genre. I haven't been this excited for a new adventure release in ages and (with regards to more recent games) it reminds me more of Whispered World and The Book of Unwritten Tales and the like than the Telltale games. Which is a good thing imho.
Young Graham kinda reminds me of Guybrush Threepwood.
Looks great, although I'll probably wait until all episodes out before I buy it.
I loved all the originals sierra was the shit
I'm so glad to see this game looks good. While King's Quest isn't my favorite adventure game, (That's a split between Quest for Glory and Sam and Max) it was still a big part of my gaming youth. Though, frankly, I'd buy this five times over for just featuring Christopher Lloyd. I love that guy. I mean, it's fucking Doc Brown. Come on.
I absolutely love love love the art style and graphic design in this game! It's positively GORGEOUS! And the humor from what I've seen thus far, is spot on as well. However, I dislike getting my game in pieces so i'll probably (eagerly) await the full release of all episodes before purchasing. Thanks for getting us hip! will keep my eye on this game.
Starkiller234 You bet man!
2 years later and I'm curious; did you buy the full game, and how do you feel about it now in retrospect?
Have you ever reviewed the Longest journey games? If not I would love to hear your take. The 3rd one is on-going now. And the two previous ones would make for nice classic reviews.
This game looks beautiful btw!
One of the PS4 games on PS+ for December (2015) ...
I don't normally like adventure games, but you're review and video really sold me on the idea of this one. It looks fantastic, and definitely gives off this strange sort of princess's bride feeling. I'll try out the first season first though to see if it really feels as fun to play as it looks.
jgunner280 Thanks Jgunner I hope you like the game man!
Chapter One is free for PS Plus members on PS4. I don't know if this is ONLY part one...
Took 4 years to get to $9.99. Like all other games. Glad I watched the review 4 years later.
Thanks for the great review. I'm sure these take a long time to put together. Nice work. I think I'll buy it and play through it with my kids.
Great review. I was glad you touched on length as well. I wish you would include that catagory in all your reviews. While it's not the only factor it is one of the factors I like to consider. Anyhow I'm off to buy it now. I remember shoving quarter after quarter into the machines trying to keep Dirk alive so hearing you mention him this became an instant buy.
I follow a few reviewers who talk about the old games on their channels and yet there seems to be no hype at all for this one.... thanks for making a review so quickly!
Indira A You bet! Thanks for watching it!
I found the Lord of the Rings rotoscoping to be terrifying, and I saw it in my 20's o_0
Rankin-Bass all the way, man.
I was skeptical so I bought the 1st episode on steam. Honestly having played a fair few adventure games, I have not enjoyed one since the 1990's when Lucas Arts reigned supreme. I have never played a kings quest before this one and I knew very little about the story's and characters, perhaps I missed out?
That said having completed the game in one sit through (which I never normally do), this game was great fun I almost want to say amazing! As the reviewer pointed out it makes you feel like you are playing an old adventure game but with excellent sound and graphics, very enjoyable!! Definitely worth a look at £7 or 10$
The only down side for me was the puns did run a bit thin after a while and some of the voice acting was on a few occasions dry.
Played this over the weekend and loved it. I like Telltale and Life is Strange is my favorite episodic game but this was great. It really felt like a combination of Telltale/LiS and Monkey Island and other Adventure games. The art style was great as well. I can't wait for more of this, never played a Kings Quest game before either.
AxelOwnz Its great man. Glad you liked it!
Man, you never sleep do you? :P
Another great review.
I usually find its better to play these episodic games when they are complete, otherwise you might forget what was going on in the first episode by the time the second one is released.
How many hours did it take you to finish this and was there enough incentive to do it again?
Derrick Hayden 5+ and yep as I say in the review the incentive is that your actually moving, playing, interacting through most of that. Its meater than any Telltale game by a country mile
Great review as always. Think you could do Kyn next. Would love to get your opinion.
Outstanding review. The analogies are useful and amusing. Keep up the good work guys!
Jeff Leppard Thanks man
I had no idea what this game was, but wow! It looks fantastic, getting it this week
Oh my god, the nostalgia!
Xydarc indeed
i love how they remade it as an rpg kinda game
Great review man! I'm excited to play this tomorrow. Hopefully it is as good on XB1. :)
Great review mate, I was wondering about the content for my son. Do you think a) it's suitable for a four year old and b) do you think he would enjoy the games overall pacing?
Merlin19783 Yep its fine
I just watched this review and thought it helpful. Mainly because I'm trying to decide whether or not to buy it for the Xbox One. I played the Sierra classics as a kid, but when I've tried to play the re packaged games now in DosBox it just doesn't feel as authentic. At least with the Xbox version it would be running native and an upgrade from the old versions. At least that's the impression I've come away with.
Enjoyed this review and the game looks really fun. My question is what kind of reflexes do you need? I love adventure/puzzle games, but shy away from anything that takes too much realtime/reflexive coordination, because I don't have it. I can move characters if the keys can be mapped, but avoid realtime combat (think MineCraft on Peaceful). Examples or descriptions of one of the more heavily reflex-critical tasks would be really helpful. Thanks.
Carole Snyder Not very many. 98% typical adventure gameplay.
D&Dfan Thanks
I already bought it much before but sony screwed because of the store update on the following day anyways. everything is good now though! and I must say I really love the art style of this game. Its also has great funny humor that I was laughing in a bunch of parts of the game. It also has a lot more meat in its gameplay for an episodic game... so it justifies the $9.99 price tag Definitely was a buy for me, I have the complete edition though.
Hey ACG, huge fan of your work. I only look to your reviews before buying a game. Anywho, it sounds like your'e a fan of the old king's quest like I was as a kid with the big 3/4 floppy. I am surprised you haven't done a review of the complete series of this game since all chapters are now out. Would be pretty cool if ya did. Keep up the good work.
If I buy this on my xb1, do I have to re-purchase it to be able to play on my 360. (I gave my mom my old console and she really wants to play this, but paying twice is ridiculous). I've searched everywhere online for an answer, and found absolutely nothing. From what I can tell, I think I would have to buy it again as it's not listed as a backwards compatible game. But the fact that the 360 version requires you to download the compatibility packs makes me think...maybe not? Please for the love of God somebody answer this question, it's been driving me crazy ALL day!!!!
Thank you... :)
to bad but it isnt you if you buy the xone version its different then the 360 one
you can play some 360 games on the xone but if you buy the xone version you cant play/install it on the 360
so probably the only way is to just buy it on the 360
good luck and... tell me your secret ... how did you get your mom to play the 360 hehe
Currently playing this game! cant wait to move on to Chapter 2. Anyway, i couldnt find the other chapter on sale in PS4 store.. any idea?
Its free on ps plus
Anyone know if this game will be released on disc at some point?
DUDE.... WHAT THE HELL DID HE GET A THESAURUS FOR CHRISTMAS???? JUST GIVE THE REVIEW!
Kings quest the complete collection is $11.99 today on psn
wish they would do a terry Pratchett's discworld again
How come Steam doesn't list this a game with controller support? I would love to play this on my 4K TV while laying in bed :)
If you own a PS4 online membership doo-dah then *Kings Quest : Episode 1* (of 5) is Free all through December (2015)
I enjoyed it (although like the fella here says; it's a little to cliched and by the numbers) ......could get really good by Ep 2/3
Great stuff Karak! I wanted to ask if this review was highly caffinated? Haha. I normally am not a fan of cell shade graphics style but this has completely changed my opinion on that game looks full and detailed.
P.S. Is there any games that you play online/multiplayer? If so let me know!
FunkDeezy u know it brother! Let me get back to you about the online thing
AngryCentaurGaming yea np Karak I know you're stretched thin for time lol. What is a way I can contact you directly to send you my info such as email/psn/steam?
FunkDeezy angrycentaurgaming@gmail.com
AngryCentaurGaming Karak,
I just emailed you so you should see it momentarily. My email name doesn't have my TH-cam name in it but just check the subject field! Thanks man.
just found this game on steam. dope review as per bro
Do puzzles have multiple solutions?
Yep! Well, kinda. Not EVERY puzzle.
Quite many of them usually have about 3 ways to solve them, usually pertaining to the three shopkeepers, while some only have one. It's really similar to the old kings quest games, actually.
Excellent review Karak... as always!
thanks
Whisper can do it.
This is a very well-made review, but I have to wonder if you have ever actually played the original games in the series. You grossly over-exaggerate the trope of "adventure game logic" in the old games. It was never as bad as you are making it out to be.
Lambonius Also, no one was ever "belly-laughing at the humor" of the old King's Quest games because THEY WERE NOT COMEDIES. I don't understand why people seem to remember them that way.
Lambonius Ya just replayed all of them last week
AngryCentaurGaming I did. a couple times. And funny enough a good deal of those in the classic gaming group did as well. Odd.
Happy trees :D
nice, but not nice enough and not long enough for 40€. for that price you can really find something better, Witcher 3 for example, playtime 150+ hours and better in every aspect
Ragna Rock You mean 9.00
AngryCentaurGaming no, I mean 40.
Ragna Rock ...
Ragna Rock steam: 9.99 the first chapter
40 all of them
Yeiraw Raw yes, thanks for the confirmation. I mean all chapters, obviously.
Superb review. I was already very interested in the game but this video just sold it to me. :)
Ahh not available on PS3?
Izahdnb It is, yes.
It's in the Playstation store. Right now episodes 1-5 are $39.99. They also have a season pass, forgot how much.
Go go go indie developers you can do it, make your own abomination too, Tim $chafer shows the way!!!
darkozric79 Luckily this isn't that
3:57 Who is voicing him, I swear I heard him somewhere before!
Gilmore Mizzi Wallace Shawn - he was in The Princess Bride as the "inconceivable" guy and Rex the dino in Toy Story.
Great review though new to this genre i'm gonna give it a go.
thanks good series of games!
Thank you for this.
Nishit Mendon you bet
I was anxious about an appointment I had early in the morning, just before watching this. So glad, I watched this just before bed. Instant nostalgia(even though I never played the original) + falling back in love with games.
wish this wasn't labeled as a King's quest game ...
***** Becouse it is based on the name to sell, is this a proper pc adventure game? what do you see are you blind?
yeah you could take the game title away from this and it wouldn't matter because this doesn't appear to have anything in common with the old games
lol OK so I'm 35 and I've got you beat! Nice argument there, as for evolution, I always thought that's taking a step forwards not backwards. I haven't actually given this game a shot and I intend to because I don't like to judge without trying out things first, but I stand by my overall first impression, which is this game brings nothing as a continuation of the original games. ;)
Evolution? Now I understand that this brain-dead game is perfect for you, I guess you are a fan of tim $chafer and telltale too? Wow too much evolution here, I can't handle it.If you want to see evolution and respect combined together just look at Gilberts project,Hell, even Samorost is 100 years ahead in comparison to this and it is a flash game... But no problem we have democracy, you can play your abomination and let me have my opinion too.
To me, one of the best things about the old King's Quest games was solving those illustrious puzzles (the beautiful 'A-ha!' moment) and of course, the puns.
Now after beating it, I'd have to say while not as difficult as the previous games, the evolution from the old point-and-click adventure to this new generation puzzle solver is GREAT.
The puzzles are just as creative as ever, and solving them is just as amazing as it once was. Not to mention the awesome storybook-esc graphics that makes the game "pop". As for the puns… they're as cheesy as ever. ;)
If you're worried about the game's quality in regards to the old ones, its still amazing as ever. This, added with some neat (and quick) first-time person sections (which in my opinion, is a nice addition that complements the rest of the game) makes this game a DEFINITE buy.
The game itself CAN be on the shorter side, however, for $9.99, it's worth the price.
Wow. Great review.
treepizzle Thanks treepizzle
Great review.
***** thanks!
this is episodic. so nope gonna pass.
Hi, I actually bought episodes 2-5 after downloading the free first episode and then after reading this review. I didn't actually need the review as I was hooked from the very first scene. I just clicked the link as to why wait for the sale, the full game is well worth the full asking price. But if it comes up in a sale, you'd be mad not to get it. The animation is reminiscent of Don Bluth from All dogs go to heaven and space ace fame/infamy. I would imagine that this is what he would have loved for his, graphically stunning but limited gameplay classics from way back.
The whole episodic argument is a mute point tbh, you either like the game or not. I'm sure the full game is huge. I've just completed the free first episode and want more. The freedom of choice and how it effects future scenes is incredible and gloriously animated.
Great review
IraqiNoob Thanks!
One of the PS4 games on PS+ for December (2015) ...
Very good review.
