The jazz snobs who snub their nose at guys like Lorber should listen to this. In fact, if you didn't tell them who it was they'd probably really like it -until they found out lol
This is the first time I even heard any innuendo on Jeff Lorber's claim to musical fame and proficiency. Who is even suggesting this man does not master all genres, including pure/hard jazz? Lorber has always played with the most accomplished session guys and recording artists in the business....most of his touring and jazz comp bands are made up entirely of Black jazz-fusion players. There are so many self-important vermin who don't deserve to be breathing who make stupid, condescending and arrogant remarks about this artist or that artist, all somehow implying that they are amateurs, undeserving of their reputation, or somehow not an authentic "jazz" player, or "fusion" player, or "classical" player or skilled on their instrument.....it is just amusing. If someone has principled arguments on which to make their case, let's hear it, but otherwise STFU.
As I've said elsewhere on here, does anyone have a jazz guitar player who they perceive as the smooth jazz guitarist's successor in any sense of the word? I know of no one who played like Chuck who is still out there....I do regard Ritenour and Carlton as great artists in their own right, but they were never Mr. Loeb.
Listen up Commenters if you're still out there. To be able to play what is here the way it was done, is nothing short of one of the best covers of this wonderful Song I have ever heard, EVER! Doing full justice to the Jurassic original in every way. And, the Jurassic version is one of the finest improvisations ever captured! "Can't hang", my ASS!
This tune.....let me tell you.....Steps got me into college, Steps altered my understanding of scale/chord apllication, composition and improvisation especially in bebop. Yardbird and Trane saved my life.
Ease and alacrity says it all. These guys are having a ball with a gem that challenges the performers no end. Brilliant, every bit of it. Thank You for sharing. I am Blessed.
The ability to play over the "Giant Steps"/Coltrane cycle remains to this day one of the benchmark standards by which a jazz musician's improvising skill is measured.
Bass player dies at 3:46 (can you blame him at this speed!!), and Lorber offers the safety net return to melody - gracious and pure talent. ALL these guys are outstanding! You gotta love this stuff...back to my practise ;-)
Eric M just sat there...no sax solo on 'Giant Steps'? I'm appalled. But Will Kennedy is a constant denominating monster on this. So energetic, yet smooth. Nice to hear Jeff Lorber stretch out a bit too from the usual Contemporary vain.
cool,,,, reminds me of the classic reefer madness movie, and the guy saying to the pianist,,,faster faster,,, thank goodness my drum machine only goes to 255, so i rarely have to see if i can go above 255,,lol
The other thing is Tommy Flanagan saw those changes for the first time that day, not many minutes before the recording. I'm sure these guys have spent hours shedding this tune just like every serious jazz musician whose formative years are post-1967. Also, Giant Steps does make a great ballad. Also a great waltz and a lot of fun in most odd meters. Give it a try.
Dear friends. Please check new original music video by Konstantin Ionenko Quintet, if you'll find a moment - th-cam.com/video/73xy4vqdGNE/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching!
I remember when Russ Ferrante learned Giant Steps - he played it in stride style and kept the bass going while he played a solo, and at a good tempo too. This was about 1975. They guys sound good but they are just playing catch up!
RIP CHUCK LOEB

Anybody who knows anything about music would never thumb their nose at Jeff Lorber.
LOL I'm a snob (sort of) but I got turned onto Lorber as a 11 yr old (Wizard Island....my dad was cool)...so I'm digging this.
I mean just because you can rip Giant Steps doesn't mean someone is going to like the original music you make.

RIP Chuck!! What an amazing player.

The piano solo in the beginning>>>>
Where was Eric Merienthal solo?
That was some serious playing right dar folks...and not a whiff of Kenny G-ness
The other thing is Tommy Flanagan saw those changes for the first time that day, not many minutes before the recording. All the musicians are great but still give the drummer some! I know its not traditional for a drum solo in Giant steps but man he was killin!
Eric Marienthal decided to literally sit that one out. ;)
