SOLVED! Mercedes LIFTGATE NOT WORKING! Tailgate opens but doesnt close! Needs help closing EASY FIX!

- Mercedes rear hatch tailgate trunk opens but won't close! If you let it go longer it will probably not open at all! Try this before you replace the pump!
Try this if the tail gate won't open all the way! Or not at all!
My Mercedes 06 GL320 X164 tailgate would not open properly and did not close at all when parked on a slope. Some claim its the pump! Its not! Reservoir was completely empty! (2006-2012 models)
I topped off the fluid in my tailgate pump. Fixed all the issues! Fixes loud pump noise issue too!
How to top off fluid with pump location!
Google claims AeroShell 41 is compatible. I don't know. Use at own risk!

I can confirm low fluid causes the liftgate not to close 100%. Mine looked a little gunky and had barely any fluid in it. I used Mercedes power steering fluid. Filled it up vertically to the halfway line. Now,😃 my trunk can close from a full lift state.
This was for a 2008 R350 113k miles

@@Justthemow I am not 100% sure but I think they went to electric operation of the lift gate in 2013. no more pump with hydraulic operation. look for a video about how to calibrate the stop height

Would this same fix apply to a 2013 ML350? Your notes say 2006-2012. My 2013 is doing the same thing.
I believe the system was changed from hydraulic to electric on 2013. you have to verify what system you have. is it doing exactly the same as mine? or is it stopping half way down and going up again?
@@kjemad When I open the trunk, mine struggles to lift past about 2-3", then it gives up and closes. I try again and (I know it's impossible but) it tries harder and it opens. It closes fine every single time. If I open the trunk and very gently assist the first few inches with my hands, it opens fine the rest of the way. --- Turns out the 2013 is fully electronic with the strut/support arms containing the lifting mechanism. So much for a cheap fix.
it could possibly be a bad helper cylinder. the electric version has 1 electric cylinder and 1 helper cylinder. one of them are probably bad...
Where do you suppose the fluid went....
not sure. probably wept out a little bit here and a little bit there over the last 13 years. lots of connections and lines and cylinders. not very much missing though. but that little bit makes all the difference....
What year is your Mercedes? I have a 2008 GL 450.

What about can be closed but not opened by remote or by switch (only door handle)
its probably a bad lock actuator. common issue. expensive! if you buy one from a junkyard on ebay make sure its the most updated part number! DO NOT buy chinese knockoffs! they cause all kinds of issues including battery drain which cases your car not to start in the morning...
It could also be the actual door handle getting stuck in open position. this will cancel out the remote

its the hatch lock actuator. some people buy a cheap china clone to fix it but i would highly suggest not doing that as i heard complaint about them draining the car battery flat. its easy and cheap to fix the original unit

I don't know. Didn't see anything leaking anywhere. It takes very little fluid from empty to maximum. Probably lost a very very little bit at a time over 13 years of use. Over 2 years since I refilled it now and its still working great

its most likely the pressure tabs on the sides. the link bellow is on my R class but the system is exactly the same on the GL

@@kjemad It wasnt the pressure pads i tested them with a meter and they measured normally and i also tried the resistor and it still does the same thing
I have a faster solution to my 2009 Ml320 bluetec. SELL IT and let the new owner deal with it.
