    A dull grey January day, and Paul sets up a wormery in a second-hand Original Wormery that we received free from a post on Gumtree. The wormery needed a good clean before Paul could start the bedding for the worms, and transferring the worms we received as a gift before Christmas from Erica's own wormery.

    Thanks for this Paul, and I do agre the 22mm poly pipe is a very good addition.. My green bin thanks you Sir. X ;-)

      So am I Kelly. I am rather intrigued by what is going on in the wormery, though I'm leaving them alone for a few days to settle in. When I do open it up I imagine they will have started arranging themselves into little rooms; allowing for each of them to have his/her own quiet corner. 😂

      Thank you Simon and Adam. We are novices to a wormery though are keen to try and compost as much as possible in various different ways this year. I'm going to be setting up our Hotbin in the next few days as though we got a really decent amount of very good compost out of it last year I didn't get the mix quite right and it turned out to be quite wet. It's my intention to follow through on these composting initiatives each month as we go through the year. As Chair of our Community Gardens we are having a meeting with the Sustainable Urban Growing Initiative to see if they can help us with composting on site. 😀

    Totally fascinated by this Paul and I guess I need to do some research as to how and why this works .

    • @paulsavident
      @paulsavident 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Basically the worms feed on the vegetable scraps and other food scraps and then poo it out and it's their poop that makes all the worm casts that makes the compost; and then the liquid drips into the container underneath. The liquid has many nutrients and minerals in it which can then be diluted and fed to plants. It's a whole ecosystem and growing technique in itself called vermiculture. Fascinating. 😊

  • @CarolAnn61

    My wormer has legs so a small bucket fits under the tap. So you might think about lifting it up a little.

    • @paulsavident
      @paulsavident 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good idea. We have a mini-bucket that fits currently, though we would then need to decant into a larger container and dilute. Well spotted! 😀

    Hi mate this is the same wormery I use, There is supposed to be 4 feet on the bottom of the tray to hold the media up so that the juices can collect under it, Take a look at my video to see the parts set up from new. Good video

    • @paulsavident
      @paulsavident 5 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @know50lege
    @know50lege 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good update Paul I`m sure the Cedrics & Cedrichitas will be happy in there. One thought about the liquid at the bottom,quite often I hear people refer to it as worm tea,it is actually leachate and although it contains a lot of nutrients it also contains a lot of bad bacteria which is not so good for plants. To make worm tea you take a handful of worm poo put it into the foot of a pair of tights or something similar,put water in a bucket and agitate the bag in the water then strain the liquid and use it in a sprayer.It needs to be used fairly soon otherwise it loses its potency.Or if you are using it in a watering can you probably won`t need to strain it.

    • @paulsavident
      @paulsavident 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark. Thanks for this advice, which is new to me. So do you spray the plant then, rather than watering the ground. Foliar rather than soil food? 😀

    • @know50lege
      @know50lege 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@paulsavident Yes you can foliar feed or water onto the ground.The thing with it is oxygen is needed and as the liquid goes through the worm poo anaerobic bacteria become part of the liquid. One thing people do is put the leachate in a bucket dilute with tap water that has been standing to rid it of chlorine,then attach an airpump to an airstone put airstone in bucket and add lychees.Apparently this really gets the good bacteria going and makes it a live culture. Hope that helps

      A few weeks before Christmas I was going to pick one up in North London which was tower system. It was a circular one. When I got to the place I got a text saying already been taken... Wasted journey... I was lucky enough to find this one (as I say endlessly...) on Gumtree only a few days later. I think the tower ones work really well as you can take the compost out in layers as it is created; with this one I think you need to really wait till it's at least half way if not fully full. 😊

    Isn't it just amazing the wonderful work these worms do Paul?. The amount of people grossed out when i talk about them is shocking to me. I once witnessed a plasterer filling in a bees nest in an outside wall at a neighbours house while he was having a fag break. He had seen the bees flying in, so he went inside and got his ladders , trowel etc. and climbed up and filled the entrance. I went round and asked him nicely to unplug it telling him it had been there a long time. He actually refused saying he didn't want to get stung. I got a bit irate at that point and amongst other things asked him did he know how important bees are. He just shrugged. That sent me off on a bit of rant and ended in asking how did he think we got our food........ to be met by the reply,"From Morrisons".........and believe me he was serious. (Arghhhhhhhh!!!) I now know where the saying, "You could have knocked me down with a feather" comes from!......as i stood there dumbfounded with my gob hanging open. 😯😯😯I had to ring my neighbour at work to tell him what had happened and only after a phone call did he come out and unplug it. This wasn't a young apprentice either, he had to be in his early 40's. Despair wasn't a good enough word to describe the feeling i had about it. Eeesh, a horrible memory has come from a beautiful thing.....how strange is that? Anyway, Thank you for that wonderful vid. I can't wait to see how the kids get on in there new home and eventually meet all your grandbairns. I'm having to make do with my compost bin at the minute but it's teeming with worms and i have picked loads up today from underneath all my containers on the grass. (Sorry about the rant......memories, BAH!! 🌱🌻🌻🌱

      @paulsavident 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good for you in calling out that guy and also calling your neighbour to rectify. I am too often dumbfounded by people's ignorance of nature, food and common sense; and feel I must have been brought up in a very different time and place. Well done on standing up for the bees. And thank you for taking the time to comment and tell us that story. 😊

      Thanks for sharing! I think some people are so wrapped up in their own little world they simply don't consider the bigger picture and how it all works together. Having said that, we don't know that person's journey and how they developed that type of ignorant, stupid thinking. Unfortunately there are plenty of those types around.

    • @paulsavident

    What is worm juice

    • @paulsavident
      @paulsavident 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As they eat they way through their food they secrete liquids and poo (that's basically the matter we have at the end that we would add to beds) and the liquid falls to the base and can be drawn off. 👍 It is highly nutritious! 😊
