Cheap and Easy TOMATO TRELLIS

  • I have been fortunate to have had the top video on TH-cam for growing tomatoes for the past two years and still going strong. By far the most popular thing in that video was the way I trellis my indeterminate tomatoes. So many viewers have contacted me after trying it in their own garden and had great success. This video shows that method, plus a small upgrade to the system to grow even more tomatoes in less space!

    Thanks for the cool video Brian. Wood deteriorates pretty quickly in my garden so I used electrical conduit that I slipped over 1/2” x 4’ rebar that I drove in on 8’ centers. The horizontal beam is the same conduit where I pre-drilled holes on 1’ centers and used 1/4” threaded eye bolts secured with a nut on top. Not as visually appealing as wood but it gets the job done! No digging needed and it’s really solid.

      Were you using ground contact pressure treated lumber? If you’re using something like untreated yellow pine, it’s going to rot super fast, but the pressure treated stuff should be good for several years. That said, I like your Uber-industrial strength solution. Being in a suburban environment, I suspect my neighbors would not.

    Thank you for the inspiration. I modified the design to suit our situation, while following the concept. Today I put a second set of clips on all of the tomatoes and saw the first few fruits that have set (San Marzano for the win, second year running).
    I used cup hooks (open) instead of eye hooks (closed) for ease of re-hooking the tomato hooks.

  • @DanScottChannel
    @DanScottChannel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    If you're gonna use tomato string hooks and clips to trellis tomatoes, make the trellis at least 7' tall. This is cheaply and easily achieved by using 8' T posts with conduit where you connect the conduit to the posts using PVC elbows and or T's. T posts and conduit will last virtually forever and are easily moved each year seeing you don't want to plant tomatoes in the same place each year.

      Try Y-Posts and a suitable length of fairly solid bamboo. Just drive the posts in, lash the bamboo along the top solidly and run appropriate strength twine up from each plant.
      Don't place the posts right at the ends, moving them in a plant or two reduces the flex in the middle.
      I don't even use hooks, just take the twine, attach with a loose loop to base of tomato stem, wind in up to the top of the plant, then up to the bamboo, loop it around a few times, then take it back down itself and tie off with an Clove Hitch or one of its slightly stronger variants. Nice and easy to adjust tension needed, by just moving the hitch and adjusting the slack around the loops on the bamboo.

    My husband built the trellis last week. I tweaked your design by having him install the upper bars at a 45 degree angle so that the front row of tomatoes will not shade the back row. Looking forward to a great harvest this year! Now if only the nights could warm up (still around 40F) so that I can actually plant the tomatoes in the garden!

    Don't split the end of the horizon board,, First predrll for the screws.
    Upper board, move upright inward about 8" and it will be strong longer as the stress of the skews in time will be less pressure to bust the upper board .
    Thanks for the teaching

    Glad you posted this today! We had one of our old Maple trees get struck by lightning and lost a “branch” that I am repurposing. I just cut a bunch of 8’x2-3” branches out to the garden last night to start building trellises today and was looking for you past video when this popped up🥰. Happy garden for me! I have 8 varieties of tomatoes, beans, etc. This year I am trying a lot of your techniques, so I am super excited to see how elevated my already prolific garden will turn out. Everything from artichokes to zucchini! Only thing I’m missing is a Noah!!
