      My headcannon is that the nurses are more technicians. Healing the Pokémon is the easy part of the job. Fixing the thing and keeping it maintained is the other 95%.

      @@iandakariann Considering that we never really see pokemon get "seriously injured" in the games, sure. In the anime, they absolutely need to be nurses given that pokemon battling can cause grevious injuries that require more than just simple patchups. The 2nd episode of pokemon is a great example of this, as are several other episodes where it's clear a nurse is actually required.

    • @iandakariann
      @iandakariann 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +317

      @Miro_X this might be a case of the game mechanic simplifying the in game reality. Like how you can fight a trainer, beat all of their team, use the vs seeker, then boom they can fight again at full power. Technically they will need to return to the Center to fight again but the concept is ignored for the sake of simplicity. Just like how you never have to eat or sleep (you are, you just don't have to represent it in game).
      We know pokemon can die which suggests they can be seriously injured beyond being knocked out. So there is a whole concept of harm we aren't seeing for the sake of the game.
      So it is possible that the anime is accurate and the nurses can care for Pokémon beyond the machine, but for gameplay sake we never have to worry about it

    The other reason for the S/V nurses having a less nurse-like outfit also owes to the fact that Pokémon centers here have been converted into gas stations. You don’t even go into a building, it’s a kiosk with a roof and no walls.

    For the anecdote, Pokemon Horizons has a recurring character heavily implied to be an ex-Nurse Joy who decided to quit. She said being from a family of famous doctors, and she mostly refuses to approach Pokemon Centers (and her main Pokemon is Chansey). I personally love that concept. It's expanding on what we always took for granted in the Pokemon world and making something new with it.

    The way that the anime does the pokemon centres and Nurse Joys (with the implication that they're actually treating wounds and ailments) has a more realistic vibe and, in a way, feels more like it's "what really happens"? It's ridiculous to expect players to sit around for half-an-hour-plus in real time to get their pokemon healed, so "stick it in a machine and push a button" is a better implementation from a *gameplay* perspective, but from a realism perspective, the anime is probably closer. We see a similar thing in, say, RSE, where the rest hut at the foot of Mount Chimney allows you to "rest for a while", with the implication that it might actually be an overnight stay, allowing for the same kind of treatment of wounds and ailments that pokemon would undergo at the higher-tech (and more formal) pokemon centre facilities.

    I kind of like the old design. In the anime, the characters had to take their pokémon to be seen by a nurse and she would personally attend them. The machine thing in the games always felt like a compromise for convenience in gameplay and limitation of what a Gameboy game could do. So I think it's sad that they never left that mode and actually steered into it.
    Personally, I liked that pokémon centres were buildings that facilitated trainers and while the kiosks accomplish that, they just feel way less important or special.

    • @BonaparteBardithion
      @BonaparteBardithion 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      I think from a gameplay perspective passing your Pokeballs into a machine still works. The player is going to be healing their team hundreds of times, sometimes in short succession. There isn't really time to show more than the nurse hand-waving or sticking a bandaid on the first member of your team without making the process drawn out. Doing as they have been accomplishes letting you know the whole team is healed without taking too much of the player's time.
      I do agree about the kiosk though. While the gas station design is cute given the mode of travel, having a whole building felt like a proper rest stop and the closest the player comes to staying at a hotel in each town. There were more NPCs all taking a break or offering a service and info to other travelers.
      The coffee shop in the S/M stops were an especially nice visual touch since you could freshen up and get a hot meal. The gas stations don't even have decent benches.

Like, in Paldea, there could've easily been a chain of sandwich shops and places to sit and eat them instead of using the picnic table.

    I think pokemon leans a bit conservative when it comes to the nurse because healing your pokemon is one of the most important features. Except that most nurses are found in PokeCenters behind counters, same as the Mart NPCs (which are almost exclusively male, incidentally). By the time players encounter the rare occasions they're found on the road the player has already learned what that NPC design means.
      They could have two different NPCs behind the counter or maybe alternate the male and female versions in each town if they wanted the player to be familiar with them.

    I found it kind of cute that the SWSH nurse is actually in this very traditionally English clothing, as someone who enjoys historic clothing, and is one of the only ones without bangs. It reminds me of the fantasy feel of Pokemon, that the nurse uniform looks almost like we'd expect it in a steampunk adventure.
    And I love the Kitakami nurse, how she feels like just a regular late teens to 20-something year old lady working a job, texting when not serving people, kind of looks a bit annoyed but like, it's just her face and she just isn't putting on a smiley act for the workplace. Honestly, as long as she heals my pokemon when needed, I think she did nothing wrong and doesn't owe anything else. She captures the burned out gen z vibe 😂

    Turn of the century nurses did look a lot like the generic image of maids we have today. A simple, ankle length dress (cheap and easy to wash), a hood of some kind (symbol of profession, keeps hair out of the way), a white apron (will get dirty, so easy to change into a clean one). White because the heavy washing and bleaching required to keep things clean in a hospital would also destroy all colour. A house maid would have similar clothes for similar reasons. In europe nurse clothes also partly evolved out of nun's habits, but that's a different story. As a rule, those were not feminine outfits back then, they were practical and bland.
    So yes, the outfit is very conservative in that it comes from a time where nursing was the only job acceptable for a woman to have ("be grateful that you are allowed to serve" kinda deal), but also it's the outfit of a working woman earning her own money 120 years ago.
    I'm saying there is a lot of feminism going on just under the surface.

There is literally nothing wrong with setting a certain character type to being girls too. Girls can be feminine, nurturing, and sweet. The character is meant to be a warm beacon of joy as you can restore the much needed health and pp of your mons after battling. Plus it doesn’t matter what the role is anyways, in what universe do you need to justify a person being nurturing and a girl being feminine, like why wouldn’t girls be allowed to be those things.

But the aesthetic of their technology is always clunkier & more tactile than what we have in real life, & there's a lot of the archetypal 50s stay-at-home mom, skirt wearing nurse, policewoman who also wears a skirt & pumps for some reason, etc.
