Your transparency as a professional athlete is so awesome cause it is still very relatable to us hobby joggers in our 40s and 50s solely trying to break our HS PRs :)
Brilliant advice. When I did the Comrades Ultra in 2017, I completed the course within 30 seconds of my goal time. I think it was the most perfect race I've ever ran. Having never done an ultra, I trusted my training even though I thought I wasn't getting enough miles in, but started on race day feeling fresh and not overtrained. I had a brain fart about 70km in and thought I was finished at the final checkpoint. I ran off the course and if not for the crowd, would have stopped. I adopted the following mantra: Focus, fuel, finish and it worked. Still use it when the brain gets foggy.
Great advice! Thanks Stephen! Going for my 3rd Marathon Jan 2024. Targeting Sub 4hr. 1st was 4:58. 2nd 4:15. Started running end of 2020 at 41 yrs old. Loving the journey.
Absolutely fantastic, Stephen; sage and often truly moving advice. Distance runners are a cut above; your reflections and lessons learned show that level of self-awareness. I wish you all the best. See you out on the road, brother.
Thank you, you are very Inspiring. At 50 years old, I am preparing for my sixth marathon in May (Ottawa, Canada) I have been inactive since 2013. But your videos help me train my body (ans my brain) well. Good luck to you!
Hello Stephen, I want to say thank you for your video tips: “Best Marathon TIPS i wish i knew as a beginner” ❤️🙏🏻 I just completed Valencia marathon today (03/Dec/2023) with a 92s PB of the time 2:50.18s according to my watch! I like you mentioned when touch going. “Focus mile by mile” 💪🏻 It happened from mile 18th to the finish-line Once again thank you buddy ❤️
This is golden info! Just ran Boston after a terrible block. Had Covid for 2 weeks and then lower leg stress reaction. Spent some time on the elliptical/Arc Trainer. Went there just hoping to finish 26.2 and threw all my time goals out the window. Decided to not even look at my watch. Ended up with a 13' BQ. I kissed a girl in Wellesley, drank a beer in BC and really enjoyed the full experience. What a blast for a 60yr old fart. LOL
I didn’t really know who you were until this video. Now I’m a huge fan. Thank you for this. This already put me in the right headspace for trying to run my first marathon. Subscribed
Really enjoyed this. I feel encouraged as I prepare to run Prague Marathon this weekend. Relax and have fun. We can be too serious sometimes. Such sound advice.
Your story is so inspiring. One caveat- you didn’t let anyone down, not your country nor anyone else. You did the best you could on “that” day - period…. Keep it up. Love your videos
This year is my first marathon in dublin. Ive been training and honestly i just want to get across the finish line in one piece and hopefully enjoy it (for the most part as im sure at points i will be like why am i doing this) but i will feel proud of myself for completeting regardless of time
Thanks, i can relate to these ups and downs. Only road and mountain biking the last month and the next month due to running my last marathon with metatarsal injuries.
Stephen thank you so much for all the videos, your wisdom and experience is incredible. I recently got back to running after 5 year break and your approach is inspiring. Keep doing You! :)
You said something that i needed to hear. I will run the OC on May 7th. It will be my very first. I was feeling stressed, worried, concerned... But you said... "Enjoy the event". Take a deep breath and enjoy the moment. I will do just that. Thank you.
This is a brilliant video and it does not matter at all where you're at in terms of pace or race time, applies to everyone. I was really happy to have an experienced marathoner as a coach that told me a lot of those things before racing. In my first fuelling training ever I almost threw up and had to find the right products and timing. Of course you can't avoid everything, I pushed to hard and fell back, I over- and undertrained, expected to much, got frustrated, all that... But as an amateur it's good to see even pros struggle with the same things and are "just human" too. Gives me way more confidence that I can overcome all that too.
Such a great video! I’m running Manchester marathon tomorrow and will remember these tips for sure. I will definitely try to enjoy tomorrow first and foremost 100%
What a video. Last piece of advice really hit. Im running my first Marathon in April and im putting pressure on myself to get a sub 4. Like you said just enjoy it.
TY so much for this. Pulled my hamstring last week in a 5k. Now starting the process of rehab. Got a marathon trip booked up in Munich in 25 weeks. Beating myself up a bit as I felt off before tge 5k (had run a 5m the weekend before). Feeling better already about getting to the start line. PS. Have purchased your marathon program, like it.
I'm new to your channel and I love it! You are brilliant, I love your happy disposition and encouragement in every video. My son is 18 and is a good runner I think he can learn from you and your huge experience. Thank you for your time and I will remember to enjoy my running from now on.
Nice one Stephen, great advice! I’m targeting Dublin 2024 as my first marathon and have been using your videos as motivation. Hopefully I can put this advice into action
Great video, so nice to hear about the failures too. I've done 2 London marathons and the second I was too serious and didn't enjoy it either. Everything was getting on my nerves and I said I'd never do that again! 👍🏽
Thank you so much, you are so generous with your knowledge sharing. Thank you for reminding me to enjoy the race and experience. I tend to be nervous before race (especially FM) and I needed the reminder 🦄🌈 Going to (try) to have fun!
Timely, big thanks. Just leaving for the Boston marathon…hopefully will be up to my expectations. I’ll try to transfer some of your learnings when things will become difficult 😳
Love the lessons. If stressed have fun. Bring a gopro and chat to it. Cheers others on. So much better than constantly thinking how tired your body is feeling. And much more fun 😊
I finally managed to watch a video as soon as it came out! I appreciate that you talked about DNFs as well as big wins, it's good to know that we can learn something from every marathon.
Any tips for dealing with runners knee 2 weeks before a marathon? Want to be recovered so I can compete therefore I’m doing only cross training as it’s lower impact on my knees and the pain. Any tips for this? Is it bad to take a few weeks off running or is resting and giving my knee chance to heal a bette option?
How Flagstaff - AZ is high enough to compare with Item - Kenya ? I'm asking this because i always see some news on Triathlon media saying that some athletes training in Flagstaff
How did that happen in a big race like Houston!? That’s on the Race Organizers not on you. Taking a wrong turn shouldn’t even be an option on a well marshalled course.
I trained like mad for years, 90-100km/week. Never got more than 3.30 out of it. I blame God and the universe. Probably too high heart rate during the sessions.

Try To Enjoy It..... THAT is my best take away from this. Sometimes all the hard work we put in can just build up and stress us out!

It all sounds simple but it is great advice!
Sometime it is your body condition - your hormones, your bio-clock, your nerve system awakeness, playing a huge factors on the performance
Bloody enjoy it. It’s hard to remember that at times.
Thank you for the insight and advice. Will definitely keep some of the tips on my mind. Looking forward to your content and happy I subscribed.

Stephen have you ever run the Lanzarote marathon.
How Flagstaff - AZ is high enough to compare with Item - Kenya ?
I'm asking this because i always see some news on Triathlon media saying that some athletes training in Flagstaff
Thk u🙏🏽
Aji Shanti I mean
how is your heart rate bpm so low after running 26 miles???
How did that happen in a big race like Houston!? That’s on the Race Organizers not on you. Taking a wrong turn shouldn’t even be an option on a well marshalled course.
So in sum there were no "ideal" marathon
Also from the thumbnail, wear a cap and gloves lol
I trained like mad for years, 90-100km/week. Never got more than 3.30 out of it. I blame God and the universe. Probably too high heart rate during the sessions.
Do hard sessions hard and easy days easy. Gradually build the speed. Study what are zones (1-5)
Thanks. Too late though. Too many injuries, But maybe they will heal someday. My hip is horrible @@franzeinu3750
Thank you for sharing. Such an awesome video.
