    2016 Gothic meets klassic in Leipzig we were waiting for "some kind of Depeche Mode cover band" to start. We were standing with our backs to the stage, talking and drinking. And expecting nothing... And then the first sounds came and Christan started singing and we all turned round and asked "Dave are you there?"
    After that, F2M had a lot more fans.

    Great interview! I've been watching F2M on video for YeaaaArs and in full agreement, their music is impeccable! I also totally agree on their stage appearance, not trying to embody the members rather emulate the DM sound which the hit spot on. Lastly the F2M set lists are Always unbelievable! HUGE thank you from a Very very jealous American!

    I'm really looking forward to the Friday gig at The Garage! There are a few songs I'd love to hear if I could choose : The Sun and The Rainfall (obviously!), Sea of Sin, Surrender, I Feel Loved (I know it's an odd choice but DM never played it live), My Joy. Great interview Vaughn as always & don't pay attention to the trolls, they just try to spread hate.

    • @igorr6921
      @igorr6921 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not trying to spread hate here - just wanting to understand the appeal: why should I go to that gig as I have the opportunity still, are you supposed to believe/convince yourself this is the actual DM of 93 you are seeing? Should you feel excited because of how FTM "recreate" the looks and sound of DM - and not feel the cringe when/if they fail or look/sound ridiculous? Or what? Honestly, I really want to know.

    • @ghostbird3138
      @ghostbird3138 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      First of all I don't know how you got to the conclusion you're a troll (I was referring to them who spreads hate), I can't even see a previous comment from you. Anyway, the appeal is not "recreating" DM of 93 (although every fan knows that was their carrier's best) but the fact FTM plays a lot of fan favourite DM songs DM itself would never play live. I've seen a few tribute bands (not DM tributes) over the years and it can be a great entertainment if they're doing a good job. There are several thousands(!) of DM cover/tribute songs/albums on music streaming platforms, some from other famous musicians. Are you saying none of those have the right to exist? And how FTM any different from those? It's a tribute band, the definition of tribute is "an act or statement that is intended to show gratitude, respect and admiration". That's exactly what they do!

  • @ValeryBoikov
    @ValeryBoikov 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I've said it before and will say it again - I've discovered Depeche Mode fairly recently. I never got a chance to see them live in their prime. So for me it doesn't really matter how great they sounded in 80's and 90's. I saw them once during Spirit tour and once during current tour. And you know what? I'm glad I did because I had a great time. I don't have a privilege to be a snob because I don't have memories to compare them to their past days, that's why I'll gladly take what I can.
    This leads me to the tribute acts. When DM invevitably stops touring a tribute act will be the only opportunity to experience their music live, as the next best thing. And I think that the demand for tribute bands will definitely increase. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing Forced to Mode live given the opportunity, because they still deliver great songs that we all love and do it with great quality. So, why not?

    Thanks for the interview - I love Forced to Mode and can't wait to see them live in London. FtM recreates the magical era of 80-90s DM that probably in most long-term devotees' opinions was the very peak of The Band. They do this with impeccable attention to detail, with great sound and with total respect for the band. Some requests for tracks for the London gig:

    - Photographic
    - Any second now
    - Dreaming of me
    - Oberkorn/My secret garden
    - Love in itself
    - Blasphemous rumours
    - If you want
    - Lie to me
    - Here is the House
    - But not tonight
    - Dangerous
    - As much as possible of SoFaD live versions, including the monstrously powerful Fly on the Windscreen and Everything Counts ;-)

    During the 2017 DM NY Times 1 hour interview, the boys from Basildon expressed their dismay with DM tribute bands. They apparently aren’t fans…and it’s a shame because groups like Forced to Mode are pretty damn talented. I wish they would come to the US and tour.

      @@plutostubeas a matter of fact, they do make their own music (as Forced Movement), and released their third album last month, which is quite good really. But let's be honest, most underground musicians struggle to make a living with their own music, so being able to dedicate full time to music is really a blessing, even if it's by performing covers.

Songs such as In Your Memory from earlier years or Dangerous are note perfect even SOUND perfect but more than that have a look at the cover of Insight which is broken down to an acoustic version which is beautifully composed and crafted

I used to work with Red Flag in San Diego before Mark passed away and they certainly struggled with the comparison all the time. Same with you VG, your music is great and deserves more attention but the DM shadow is overwhelming for sure

  • @BushidoPhoto

    Forced to Mode is better than DM nowadays. DM stopped playing their older songs.

  • @zacknaiyer448

    Vaughn and Forced to Mode’s endeavors require a lot of time, effort, and skill: I wouldn’t disparage that. I myself have a tribute channel; it’s very DIY and homemade but even with that, involves a lot of time and anxiety! Therefore, I respect Vaughn and FTM’s hard work.
    However, I find the whole “the tribute band is more DM than DM” (and Vaughn and FTM feeding into such myopic thinking) extremely misjudged, shortsighted, disrespectful to DM, and quite frankly, skin crawling. Also, why would you want Dave and Martin to come out and just replicate an era that they already created and lived through? Such thinking just seems so odd and backwards to me.
    Dave and Martin are artists, and I will follow and respect them with whatever journey they take me on: they’ve earned that trust within me, and I still become that giddy 11 year old whenever they release new material and go on a world tour. Sure, as someone that’s seen them a million times, I’d flip if they played b sides and deep album cuts, but if they’re not feeling it, then I’d rather they play songs they want with vigor and passion than to go through the motions of doing fan service. I’ve seen them 6 times on this tour and it’s a testament to them as performers that despite not making major setlist changes, they’ve absolutely killed it every single time! Every single tour I’ve seen, dating back to their Rose Bowl 88 show, they kill it every single frickin’ time! I honestly don’t know how at their age they still are able to do it!
    Since Alan’s departure, for the past 30 years, DM have been consistently releasing critically acclaimed albums and globe conquering tours (as well as meaningful solo work) by not repeating themselves and expanding their sound, even more admirably accomplishing this reality while facing various types of adversity and loss along with the natural challenges that may come with aging.
    How about a little more appreciation of their longevity and being survivors that march to their own drums and a little less of the narrow-minded “I want them to sound (or do things) exactly like they did when they were in their 20s or 30s” or whatever.

      I get what you are saying but you are misreading my message. I never said DM need to sound like they did back in 1995. I am simply giving credit to 3 guys from Germany how have done an outstanding job in what they do. The fact that you see this as "skin crawling" and disrespectful to DM is ridiculous. This channel has shown more love to DM than most have. VG;-)

      @zacknaiyer448 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Fair enough, Vaughn. I appreciate the love and effort that you and FTM have towards DM and wasn’t suggesting you guys were skin crawling; only ones with a limited, stuck in the past-perspective on Mode.
      However, my point is there does seem to be similar talking points that get fed into on this channel of venerating a certain era of Mode (or when Alan was with them) that could (and should) be challenged, and I just want to promote a mentality that appreciates and respects what they are currently doing. They’ve been through a lot and have accomplished a lot in the last 30 years and deserve no less.

      @@zacknaiyer448 of course ! I do respect what they are doing recently but I stick to my guns when I say they have lost their edge since losing a key member. Every original DM producer or engineer I have interviewed are all in unanimous agreement on this. This is all about nuance. Unfortunately some people don't understand nuance and when I focus in on "the golden period" , these people think I'm saying that "Current DM sucks". And this is so far from what I am saying. And I'm not suggesting you are one of these people so I just want to make that clear ! I do thank you for a good debate with valid points with opposing points of view. If only we could all agree to disagree in such a civilised manner ! VG 😎👍🎹

    • @zacknaiyer448
      @zacknaiyer448 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No totally, Vaughn. Especially when you have a band as long-standing and prolific as DM, you do get fans divided into different camps based on personnel or style of music. I-and judging from the overwhelming love DM get when they release a new album and tour-happen to like all Mode eras and am just grateful I can enjoy new music from them. Interestingly, because I heard their 80s/90s material so much growing up, I actually tend to default to listening to their post SOFAD work, so I have a definite appreciation for the post-Alan material that some may not have.
      On the subject of losing their edge, every band has their golden period-whether it’s DM, The Cure (another of my favorites!), or whomever. IMO, it’s unreasonable and unfair to place so much expectation on a work to be like a golden period album (whatever that means): I guess engineers and producers can fall into that as well-and they’re so closely involved with an artist that it may be difficult to view something on its own terms; forming strong opinions is par for the course, I guess.
      Just let a work breathe on its own is my motto without foisting the baggage of expectation on it.
      Everyone’s entitled to their opinion; I just enjoy and promote a balanced perspective. I just get annoyed with the kind of snarky, disrespectful attitude that some-not you, my friend-adopt.
      Again, I can only imagine the time and effort involved in mounting all your content as well as creating your own music, so peace be with you, brother!

      I appreciate Vaughn's channel input, although not absolutely everything, which I think is normal. You're sometimes fun to watch, thank you. Nobody is here to agree on everything. But, I agree with your point @@zacknaiyer448 on both comments. That's what I was about to write, but you already said it. I do have to to say that I did Not appreciate the question from Vaughn about FTM being the best DM replacement when DM retires soon, but I DID appreciate the good humble response from FTM naming all the band members, Daniel Miller, GJ, Flood, Francoise Kevorkian... as the ones who deserve respect, and they thought it was not good to imply something like that about FTM if DM retired...That FTM response showed what I think is a better level and well deserved respect for DM vs Vaughn's view.
      I noticed FTM seems to have a similar humble vibe like DM, that's one of the things that makes DM so big for me, their attitude. Yes the songs, yes the production, but their attitude, is gold. They have matured and have improved that and that is what makes them bigger for me.
      DM is under no obligation to do what the fans want them to do, they have a well deserved live to live for themselves first, but I do see that this tour they are doing the most fan pleaser setlist in years, specially the last part of the North American tour, where they played Strangelove acoustic which like the interview says, shows how good Martin Gore's songs can be when stripped down from the production. Thank you FTM, my favorite ones from you are Dangerous, and Happiest Girl with the clever mix of Jack Mix and Pulsating Orbital guitar mix. Thank you all.
