I am from Hameln. But I never mastered the flute. When I played it, there were more wrong notes (crooked sound) as right ones.
The story of the pied piper isn't really a fairy tale but a saga. And the piper didn't lure the children in the night out but while the adults were in church.
I think, the reality behind this is that the piper was a conscriptor who searched people to migrate to Transylvania in todays Romania. And the "children" weren't literal children as everybody born in the city is a child of the city.
Fascinating! I’ve only heard the parable version and the black dæth. I’m sure back when it was passed down and changed, but I’m going to read into this version too.

im also from germany and damn, we really do make the most horrifying fairytales/sagas. I dont know what drugs the storytellers were on to think that this is fit for children, but it still is a great story

Well, if you read "Struwwelpeter", you can guess, that children in the past could handle things much better than children from today. Nowadays the faiytales/sagas are watered down so that it is nearly homeopathic.
@@HalfEye79 true, but something like "Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern" really scared me as a child, like the feeling of slowly dying to the cold while the world hates you so much you dont even dare to go home. Its messed up, but still a good story

And there is a museum which tell the myth(or not) about the piper
