great tip about kicking your foot out of the stirrup when you dismount so you aren't caught in that stirrup if you horse spooks.I like to take it out before I swing you leg over because I feel like I could still be caught in it on the side before kicking it out. horses move so fast , before there is even have a chance to think and act.

I know this is an older video, but hopefully you'll see this. Any tips for dismounting a really tall horse? My horse is 17.1 hands and I'm 5'2". It's a challenge. I usually end up sliding down to the ground and my shirt rides up! LOL. It's quite a leap to tbe ground.
I usually just slide down hahaha. Or get half way (before your shirt rides up too far and then push off away from the horse a bit. It's still a drop I know. I'm also vertically challenged so dismounting tall horses is always quite a drop for me. 😅

In addition to damaging your horse's back, grabbing both front and back of the saddle can 'twist the tree' and damage the saddle itself, which may lead to longer term back issues for your horse

As an adult beginner should I care to get a really good safety vest? They are like 300 dollars or more here in Sweden… I got a vest now that only protect the back, the spine, but not the side of the ribs… I think is kind of different from those big racing eventing vests I tried… but is like a back protection built into a thin Winter down vest…. Not sure if this is useful at all for horse riding?! Perhaps I should send it back? Thanks for all your great videos! I really enjoy them 😀
I ride western and normally don’t use a mounting block. My horse is barely 15 hh and I rlly didn’t think I was that short but I have to pick my foot up to get it to the stirrup so I can pull myself up 😂
My friend tried to mount while the horse was tied by lead rope to the fence as soon as she untied it while on the horse bolted and bucked till she fell off...Do you know why that could of happened? Thank you

Hi Daisy! This is a great question. Anytime your horse shows bad behavior like backing up at the mounting block or trying to kick you, I would immediately lunge them around you until they are tired. They need to learn that bad behavior is going to mean more work for them. One thing you can do is practice lining your horse up with the mounting block and just have them stand there. You can step up on the mounting block and pet them, but don't get on.This will help the mearn that the mounting block is a place of rest.

I think this is all about the approach to the creature; when you approach a dog with fear, that dog will feel how you feel about the situation and will become restless or could even attack; I think it is the same with a horse; in my opinion, it may be good idea to "say hello" first, give the horse a hug or some patting; show that you are friend; you need to put off your nervousness or fears even when it is for the first time; the horse does not understand your feelings, it won't get it that you fear of approaching or you fear of trying to mount a horse for the first time; the horse only feels that you are scared and that's the worst thing that can happen to you; you need to show the horse that you are just fine and under control; then approach the horse and let the horse know (touch), let the horse see what you are doing or what you are about to do, so the horse can also prepare; remains cool or responds with obedience ... do you agree with that?
The pistol is on the right side in most cases as most people are right handed… the assistant to a night is on the right side to lend the knight the lance on the right side… perhaps that is why the tradition is to get up on the left side? 🤷🏼
It's not mentioned on here but you can always try dismounting at the mounting block. You can also take both of your feet out of the stirrups first. I also find it helpful to lean forward before bringing your leg over their butt. I find you get a bit more leverage that way.
Bruv i make the horse stay still for me to get on but as soon as i sit on the saddle it walks off without me telling it to😩🤚🏽 or when i reach to the other uh- those things where you put your feet on I forgot what they were called, it walks off🧎♀️
One riding instructor just told me yesterday how to deal with horses walking away. Instead of always going forward when you get on, ask your horse to back up first, turn then forward, etc. It will always make it unknow where you going for the horse. Hope this helps
Actually, mounting the horse on the left side is older than that. It dates back to medieval times due to most knights and other protectors of the realms (as well as people in general) were right handed, thus they did not have to worry about scraping their long swords, sabers, etc across the horse.
I am a professional....so....do not hold onto the mane with your left hand - be ready to stop the horse if it walks off while you are mounting. Better to put your right hand on the front of the saddle so you don't have to switch hand positions halfway through mounting, and that over time you do not twist the saddle or your horse's spine. Viewers would be best advised to get correct professional help
Where did you find that information? But yeah, honestly don’t like anything such as hunting. Fox hunting is even worse (bc I love them lol) It’s so sad to see people normalize killing animals for fun and then ask why the environment is changing. Hunting for food is fine but hunting as sport is no different than horse racing...
@The Magic Twister quite some fox hunting is illegal, some fox hunters terribly mistreat their horses and the dogs they use to hunt the foxes as well as and the dogs they use to hunt the foxes usually maim it or kill it in a very painful way until the hunters catch up and deliver the last blow. It's incredibly cruel and terrible

Maybe try pushing yourself away from the horse as instead of sliding down? 😂 I’m 5’3 and my pony is 13.1, so I don’t usually face this problem 😂

I wear a Cami with spandex under my riding tops. Tuck it into your breeches. It has helped me not to have those embarrassing moments

When I was a lot younger and rode horses I found the easest way to dismount a horse was to fall off it worked for me!!😬

Actually I always get both my feet out of the stirrups just for safety. My trainer taught me that way so I use it
