Safely Mounting Your Horse

  • Team Weaver’s Lisa Gentile demonstrates a technique for mounting and dismounting a horse taught to her by Ken McNabb. By placing both hands up by the swell of the saddle, you keep your center of balance and are more prepared to grab the reins in an emergency. When done correctly, mounting should also be physically easier for the rider, since you are tucked closer to the horse instead of standing away from them. This method also makes mounting more comfortable for your horse, and prevents you from pulling the entire saddle off-center when compared to having one hand on the pommel and one on the cantle of the saddle.

Oh my god- I’m pretty sure I’ve been getting on the wrong way, wondering why my horse hasn’t been thrilled about my mounting….I’ve been grabbing the wrong place!!! This makes so much sense!

So helpful, I’m gonna be riding a horse for the first time in 12 years since I was 5 and I’m so nervous. Also that horse is sooo pretty

Great video. I was searching for some tips because mounting makes me nervous. I don't have the most upper body strength and have a heavier lower body.

Super helpful thank you. My horse has days where he doesn't want to be by the mounting block long enough to let me get on. Gets really annoying when I can barley get on the saddle from the ground.

Great content for my daughter who’s just in her first few years and getting more comfortable with horses who need some guidance or are jumpy.
Do you find it helpful to pull out of the stirrup dismounting and just slide down in case the horse runs with just one foot in?
    Thanks!!
