These staff retrospectives are fantastic. It feels like this channel came along at just the right time. We all need to revisit how great these shows were.
Television was still BIG. Dave was BIG Time Late Night on CBS, a network that preiviously had not succeeded in this time slot. It was a great time. I miss it.
@@lorip.1110 That's great. Tough city to be a musician in. You had to be good. Lou was a gentleman from head to toe. Popular on talk shows back then. Funny on the Letterman skits, too.
Somewhere around 1990 I attended a LN show at NBC and ran into Gerry in the lobby. I gave him an old book, "The Story Of Meat", (I know, look it up). He wanted my address and a few weeks later I received a package with a nice note and shirt & hat from the show. A class act!
In the mid-80s, when I was a Late Night-obsessed teenager, I visited New York on vacation and saw Gerard Mulligan crossing the street, carrying a briefcase. I excitedly told my parents, "That's Gerard Mulligan!", ran over, snapped his picture, and said, "Hi, Mr. Mulligan!" I was wearing a Late Night t-shirt. He gave me a tight-lipped smile, said, "Nice shirt, kid," and quickly walked away. I wish now I hadn't been so rude as to take his picture without permission, and just said hello first and asked. Mr. Mulligan, if you're reading this, I apologize. Still got the picture here somewhere, though. 🙂
So nice to see Mr. Mulligan again. His comedy segments, especially those with Chris Elliott, were the best. Thanks for sharing another great selection of Staff Favorite Moments
Me too. I was a fan of the daytime show. Then his late show debuted. I lived in Philly. I had heard that Dave justifiably ridiculed our local NBC affiliate as the lone major market network not to pick up his show. Instead, our local station maintained 1970’s detective show reruns (ie McCloud, Cannon, etc.) in that time slot. My freshman Penn State speech communications prof assigned us a “persuasive speaking” project on any topic we desired. I decided to try to persuade my classmates why NBC Philadelphia should join all other markets nationwide to pick up the new late night Letterman show. I think I earned an “A.”
Thank you for this! I remember Dave’s morning show and that’s when my love affair with the Letterman show began. The best writing in television and Dave’s delivery, as well as his staff’s, was perfect. Andy was a genius, truly a genius and the world is darker without him.
Always a favorite! One time in NYC, a friend and I saw him walking down a street and said hi to him. I asked for an autograph, and he wrote it out to me with 'Thanks for the great back rub!" It still makes me laugh.
Nice to see something current with Gerard Mulligan. Certainly not a lot of information available on Wikipedia or anywhere else on the internet about him.
The bit where he came out with Chris and read Family Circus cartoons out loud remains several orders of magnitude funnier than anything on late night television today.
I enjoyed the over-the-top ironic humor that permeated his shows!...You had to be at least sort of intelligent, in order to appreciate the concept...nowadays, this type of humor would not register with the current generation of idiotic Americans.
Gerard is a Living Legend. LOL. I really enjoyed his great work. He brought a cuttingly funny approach to Late Night Comedy and I tremndoulsy miss him for it. Thanks for shairng.
Funniest thing I’ve seen in a while, tho I must’ve seen most of these when they first aired. Thanks, Mr Mulligan (and Letterman). These are little treasures. You’ve made me laugh deeply and often.
My favorite Mulligan bit, not shown here but sort of referenced with Henry getting fired piece, was when Letterman fired Gerard and told him to leave the studio. When Dave tried to retrieve Gerard, Dave saw a group of people watching TV who were watching Donahue. The show's subject, employees who were unfairly fired from their job, with Gerard Mulligan on it. Absolute genius TV, nothing on television today like it.
I can remember as a little kid my parents let me state up late on Friday’s to watch. Super Dave and Chris under the stairs are the two things I remember
It's funny; I remember that segment when Levon Helm didn't show....and they STILL made a funny skit out of it. I also remember Leno's bit on fast food chain's names for menu items on the revered "Second Anniversary Show" or whatever it was.... I was 13 when Dave hit the 11:30pm slot- just old enough to be up that late....(1982, things were different then) for those that currently couldn't begin to guess where their 10 year old is a 3am....😆
Bless you, sir. Not only for all of the great comedy, but for the number of sneezes you endured after catching whichever viruses Chris Elliott gave you. (I heard that he doesn't even have the common courtesy to bleach his mouth anymore!)
At 12:00 Paul mentions Arnie Barns. I'd almost forgotten about him! The man worked for Omaha Steaks! Could we maybe get a compilation of some of Dave's phone friends? Like Arnie and Meg? Maybe see if we can find out what they're up to these days?
I had put together all of the Arnie Barnes calls a few years ago. It was subsequently blocked, but I planned to re-up it. Not to be. And, as pointed out, you can find all of Meg’s segments on some obscure and now- dormant YT channel. It’s in three parts. I contacted her after they were up, and she seemed pleased but mostly surprised that there’d be so much interest, Part 1 having generated over 1.5 million views.
@@dongiller That's a bummer about Arnie Barnes. I remember looking for a clip a while back but couldn't find anything. I guess Mr. Barnes doesn't want to be found. I did see Meg's segments but thought something 'official' here would be cool. Thanks for replying!
I remembered and watched the morning show. AND I remember the theme music! And the opening sequence. And the twice during the show news break with Edwin Newman. And I was watching the very first Late Night with David Letterman, too! THAT opening sequence and what a happy surprise it was to see Paul Schaffer when they panned the band. We all knew Paul from Saturday Night Live and the Blues Brothers. Later Hollywood composer Howard Shore was the musical director for the morning show. Howard and Paul, both from Canada. Nice place there Gerald, but I don't think that is actually his house. And I like New Jersey! Staff and animals? I don't think so, Gerry! And the old RCA cameras too! WOW!!
1:13 I actually think this was better when you couldn't see the costume, because then it becomes a character that puts on just whatever costume and comes to loot food.
It wasn't LATE NIGHT or LATE SHOW with DAVID LETTERMAN without the great GERARD MULLIGAN I've heard stories from other former staffers and I was wondering when I would hear from Gerard himself I think he was twice as funny as Dave and Paul hope you're enjoying your retirement Gerard and bless you and your family.
@@bsmith1164 You’re all idiots for thinking the audience weren’t in on the joke. Of course they knew it was a skit, and they were laughing and clapping.
It's funny Gerard says he had no forewarning of the stunt Andy Kaufman was going to pull with the wrestler, because I just watched the Marc Maron podcast interview he did with Letterman, and Dave said Andy came over to him before the show, and explained exactly what he had planned.
I loved the "Gerry and Baby" segments from the mid-80s (collected into one vid by the great Don Giller: th-cam.com/video/HsDV9kbdDoM/w-d-xo.html). The one from February 17, 1986 was my fave, but all of them were hilarious. We love ya, Gerard! (You too, Chris.)
When I was a kid it was a big deal to stay up past midnight watching Late Night and then they would do a bit where they go out the side door into the daylight and I'd realize they're probably sleeping right now.
Now we know where Will Smith and Chris Rock came from! Andy and Gerry Lawlor there! You know, those are the studios where Jimmy and Seth do their shows. 6A and 6B at Rockefeller Center. And Saturday Night Live as well on the 8th floor. Historic TV from a building complex that is EIGHTY years old! Amazing! And I think my Dad was there for a tour in the 1940s too. When it was the RCA building, the parent company of NBC.
These staff retrospectives are fantastic. It feels like this channel came along at just the right time. We all need to revisit how great these shows were.

I can't even count how many times I've needed Lou Rawls and he wasn't around. Sage advice then and now.
Lou Rawls has some amazing songs. The songs he recorded for the Garfield specials are forgotten gems.
Amen 🙆🏻♀️
My parents always kept Lou Rawls' 8-tracks handy in the cabinet for when he was needed.
@stonehobson2487 Nice! Apparently, I met Lou Rawls as a baby. My dad was a musician in Vegas and played in his show. Lou was a class act.

Any segment with Gerard is worth watching, and great to see him again, like seeing an old friend I've never actually met.
Any night that Gerard was on was a good night. Thanks for all the great memories, Gerry!
He's Bat Man.
I love hearing from the writers
I am so glad to see Gerard share his memories. Anytime he showed up on the program, you knew something good was about to take place.
He’s good he could definitely write comedy for a living

Yes! You’re right! And that’s saying something cause they’re all (Staff Favorite Moments) great, can’t get enough.
I really enjoy these really long videos with the many many staff!

I used to love the Chris Elliot and Gerry Mulligan bits as a teenager. You were great, Gerry!
The one by the elevators where Gerry refuses to confirm Chris’ alibi about having just eaten lunch together 😅

Love that he showed Derek jeter’s house as his house from the bit they used to run 😂😂😂
"Andy Kaufman Letterman" is one of my favorite rabbit holes to fall into. Legend.
Hilarious overhead shot of his stately manor. 😂👍
These videos have been awesome!
Please keep doing this.
Thank you Gerard, one of the best to ever do it!
Every second of this was great
I'm laughing so hard my shoe laces came untied. Gerard you was one of the best sir! And you could really act in every skit you've done. Facts.
Andy Kaufman, patron saint of Trolls
Nice to see something current with Gerard Mulligan. Certainly not a lot of information available on Wikipedia or anywhere else on the internet about him.
this channel is just incredible. it feels so cozy and lets you step back into the 20th century
I would have sworn that I’d seen literally every episode of the old show, but I never saw a baby being delivered during the show!
The bit where he came out with Chris and read Family Circus cartoons out loud remains several orders of magnitude funnier than anything on late night television today.
Ventured into the comments just to mention Gerry’s Family Circus collection! I’m glad I’m not the only one who remembers and loved those bits.
YES!
At one point, I could have sworn him and Chris read from transcripts of Oprah.

@ 6:00 min he says Andy Kaufmann was on the morning show?? Holy cow. Did not know that he went so far back with DL. Never saw that segment before.
