This is one of the most beautiful things ABBA recorded, one of so many hidden gems. As stark and stripped back as it gets, just Frida's ethereal voice, a music box, and the sound of a clock reaching midnight on the mantelpiece of someone's life and stopping. As an angel passes though their room and the embers of a fire die down too, spiriting them away. A dark lullaby that highlights the unsurpassed quality of Benny nd Bjorn's writing, and the expressive warmth and resonance of Frida's soaring voice at its most magnificent. No-one did happy-clappy pop or pant-swinging disco like ABBA, but my god no-one did sad and dark story-telling like them either. Bravo for your sensitive reaction Dereck

Not their last album anymore, as technically there are 10 tracks to complete "Opus 10", you just have to take them from the CHESS soundtrack and accept other singers doing 4 of what are ABBA songs. And technically the two Gemini albums are ABBA albums too.

I discover The Visitors many years after it was released in 1981. Their happy songs such as Dancing Queen, or Mamma Mia are long gone here, however they have mature in their music. Like an Angel Passing Through My Room is the last track on this album. I think. Closing a full circle on their music. Bravo!!! Amazing reaction. Anni-Frid Lyngstad is an astounding interpretative mezzosoprano singer that along with soprano voiced Agnetha Fältskog they could couple each other perfectly. Listen to Frida on Our Last Summer, Put on Your White Sombrero, Knowing Me Knowing You, Should I Laugh or Cry, Me And I, I Have a Dream, Andante Andante, all longing, dramatic and emotion filled performances. And she's got a wild rock edge too! She even turns Money Money Money into a mini Broadway musical in itself!
She was the one who chose Fernando for her Svenska album, later in English and she had continually showed a great taste in her performances doing David Bowie, 10cc, Beach Boys cover versions.
Surprisingly fluid singing in Spanish, Frida must be heard in Swedish as well, thus Som En Sparv, Vill Du Låna En Man, Man Vill Ju Leva Lite Dessemellan...
It's evident that she's totally right when she sings I Let the Music Speak!

Frida has a natural gift for singing those inflections. This song sits so perfectly with her voice. There were many arrangements of the song, some uptempo but IMO they chose the best one. Very atmospheric and the same as The Day Before You Came, there is a mystery as to what the song is really about. Most ABBA songs deliver the storyline very strongly, but this one is open to interpretation. Frida really shines. It shows the depth of her talent and her personality.

It is indeed a beautiful song, and Frida's delivery of it is indeed vocal perfection. It's the only ABBA song with just one vocalist, and she and Benny recorded it alone in the studio soon after their divorce so it was very personal and poignant for her. She had a classical singing voice which she used to good measure at various stages of her career. You can also hear this on 'I Let The Music Speak' another musical masterpiece on The Visitors album. But you really should check out the synth-pop classic that is the title track. I think it'll be right up your street, Dereck. There's a lyric video available for that one too which you will probably need as the lyrics are deep and cryptic!!

Actually I can't hear Frida AT ALL in 'My Love, My Life', which is very worrying. I hear Bjorn in it in the far background; otherwise it's just Agnetha backing herself. Please tell me I'm wrong, but if you listen fully, you'll struggle to find her at all. I also find it weird that Agnetha's called out for 'When I Kissed The Teacher' when all I hear in the verses is Frida double-tracked, and then when it gets to the "One of these days..." refrain, that's where you hear Agnetha double-tracked. And why shouldn't Frida be on a lot of this song, after all, Agnetha whisper repeats the 2nd verse of 'Knowing Me, Knowing You'!

The first track on The Visitors album which is the title track sees Fridia on lead vocal also, alone safe in the house but she is threatened and terrified by an external force invading her home; in contrast Like A Angel Passing Through My Room (last track on the original The Visitors album without the bonus tracks attached on the remastered cd version) again sees Fridia alone in the house except this time she's at peace falling asleep in front on the fire, I always felt the contrasts were deliberate.

The ticking clock continues after the music fades, then it just stops. Very fitting since this was the final song on ABBA's final studio album. Now you should listen to the first song on the album, The Visitors.

I like it when Frida gets a chance to shine. So many of their better known songs either throw a spotlight on Agnetha or on their harmonizing that it feels like she's a little overlooked as an equally talented performer sometimes. This isn't a song I'd want to play often, as it's so sad. But when you're in that mood & you want sad or contemplative songs while you're thinking, this is a great one to include.

Just 2 years ago, at my lowest ebb, this was the song I'd planned to 'sing me to sleep' - I'd planned my suicide. The 'peace' & 'tranquility' you spoke of, was exactly it. Something after all the pain, that would sooth, as I gradually slipped away. Needless to say, as I've just finished almost 2 years of therapy, I lived to tell the tale.
ABBA were a long way by this point, from the celebration of youth that is Dancing Queen. This is the introspection of middle age, but how wonderful is it that it's an introspection with some calm, & warmth (whilst never denying the pain).
ABBA get plenty of credit, but it can never be enough.

This is a fabulous song off a fabulous album. You should listen to Djupa andetag (Deep Breaths). Frida knocks that album out of the ball park. In particular Ögonen (The Eyes) , áven en blomma (Even A Flower), Sista valsen med dig (Last Waltz with You).... These 3 songs are fabulous in any language. Yes it is Swedish but you do not care when you hear her. You will be quite impressed.

I Let the Music Speak and the title track are probably the best examples of that. Other great ABBA songs with Frida lead vocals are Andante Andante and I Wonder (the live version!). If you are truly a fan of Frida, you must watch this video and react to it. I have never seen a reaction to this. The video is from 1967, five years before ABBA. It really shows off her vocal range unlike any ABBA video I have seen. This video is after Frida has won a singing contest it and has a short interview, in Swedish with English subtitles. You will notice that toward the end of the interview Frida appears to be getting a little angry at the interviewer,s insistence on talking about her children and if they were interfering with her singing career. The song is, "En ledig dag" th-cam.com/video/xHUGxTvkKis/w-d-xo.html

Some great “react” suggestions from others on here, and also check out some of her solo work particularly from Djupa Andetag, it’s not in English but it doesn’t matter because it’s so seductive and beautiful. ‘Sista valsen med dig” (“last waltz with you”) is my recommendation, Frida at her absolute gorgeous best 😍

The whole of "The Visitors" carries a definite dark theme (like a nordic noir novel in music form). It came at the end of ABBA, when both couples had divorced, which is clearly evident in the lyrics. It's my favourite ABBA album by far, and still gets listened to regularly.

Typical Madonna. I think it's a typical narcissistic streak of her. And so unnecessary to do. She could have expressed her appreciation better than belittling the other. It only makes her smaller. And if she has nothing positive to say, she should have kept quiet.

@@dragpalace but a decade later she begged them for sampling gimme gimme, she wrote them a letter telling them how much she was influenced by their music. She also donned the iconic costume of ABBAs 1979 tour on one of the leg of her own confessions in the dancefloor tour

    • @chelseacharger
      @chelseacharger 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Whether she meant it or not, it was Madonna being 'edgy'. Edgy, but not exactly controversial. ABBA had long been the target of 'serious music' journalists and those who regarded them as 'cheesy' or 'lightweight'. By the late 1980's, they were long gone and seemed to have been forgotten by all but the hardcore fans. So maybe she thought she was on safe ground. History has shown that Madonna's jibe was not only nothing new but badly timed. Soon after, Erasure's tribute EP would kick off the ABBA 'revival'. Revival is probably the wrong word as revivals are all too often a short lived fad. Nearly thirty years later, it's more like a reaffirmation of what a great band they were/are.

This is pure mood music. The theme of the song I believe bothers on the wistful coming to terms with the loss of a once meaningful but mysterious romance which she likens to an angel passing through her room.
Angels are superior and mysterious beings whose interactions with mortals can only be possible on a higher cosmic, spiritual mental plane. Brief but beautiful when they visit. I think Bjorn as a lyricist has always had an inclination towards religious or superstition beliefs which he hides so well. In the song The winner takes it all, he wrote about "The gods may throw a dice.....and someone way down here loses someone dear. That means he is trying to say that the actions of the gods above determine our fate or destiny down here! There's a hit song of theirs called I have a dream which conjures up images of angels... Let's not forget that in the song "Waterloo" Bjorn convinced that Napoleon's defeat was something fated he told us same was true of falling in love. A destiny and not a choice or an ambition or even desire.
Like an angel passing through my room is another example of Bjorn's attempt at setting Poetry to Music just as they did in I Let the Music Speak assuming he alone was the sole writer of the song's lyric
This song will be better appreciated by those who love poetry. The meaning of the song is deep. Full of imagery and metaphors and clever play at words. " Dying embers warm my face (death is cold how can it heat you up?) "..... Now and Then becomes entwined playing games within my mind like the embers as they die".... What effect does he want to achieve by juxtaposing ephemeral feelings with something concrete and permanent as death?
The other song, the single that became the title of the album as well "The Visitors " is also another work of poetry set to music. The true meaning of the song is always buried under the covers of metaphors and imagery.....

    Hi Dereck 👋✨😃
    Thanks for reviewing this song.
I wish to suggest that you listen to this song all the way through to the end for full-effect, in regards to my interpretation...
After my wonderful parents both passed away in 2012, I ended up getting a new perspective with this son (after the original comfy interpretation from back in 1981). And my revised interpretation was emphasised after my partner of 25 years passed away two years ago.
The change was that I now interpret Björn's lyric to be about someone experiencing their own passing.
From the start, "Long-awaited darkness falls" now equates to that situation when some ill and/or elderly people sense that they are soon to die. "Ev'ry thing comes back to me" and "seeing long-forgotten scenes" to me is like when people talk about their life passing before their eye if they experienced nearly died, also conveyed through the narrator's mind's confusion of: "So the present runs into the past/ now and then become entwined/playing games within my mind".
"Like the embers as they die/love was one prolonged goodbye" is a great metaphor, and one that I totally understand sing the passing of those three important loves of my life.
Now, here is why I asked if you could please listen through to the end. Where Frida sings the last-note, that fades into the music box, that fades into just the "tick-tock"; that's where I imagine the narrator slowly passing away, then the final "tock" is when they've actually died and/or have gone to the afterlife/heaven.
For me, it's as though this song could have been a forerunner to the 'emo' and 'goth' genres, using 'Nordic Noir' as it's called.

It's true, there's a sort of darkness to "The Visitors". You can hear that this is their final studio album. You should react to "Should I Laugh or Cry", but then even "Two for the Price of One", which is much lighter. Please also react to more songs from "Super Trouper", like "Me and I", "The Piper" and "Like Old Friends Do". Love your videos. Keep up the good work :-)
