Great photo tribute to Patrick. I'm 50 years old and I still remember the day he died back in the early 80's. There was silence on the dance floors of San Francisco. Imagine what he would be doing today, with the huge emergence of EDM. He truly was a legend.
I have the original. A friend of mine back in the day said BUY IT, it will be a classic someday. And he was right. I have a few of Patrick Cowley's records too. A musical genius.
Thanks a million for sharing this, friscosound. At this point only 3 dislikes out of 240 ratings. Says it all really. I agree wholeheartledly with john logan when he describes much of today's "music" as crap. In the UK right now we have pretty little boybands, riding on the crest of a wave, as a result of manufactured "talent" shows such as 'X Factor', purely designed to create overnight sensations who rarely last more than two years at the most. Many cannot read a note of music and cannot "sing" (my inverted commas again) without the dreaded 'autotune', which produces an artificial 'plastic' sound - as artificial as the performers themselves. Then there is the thorny issue of the word 'band' itself. In my day a 'band' contained people who actually played instruments. In Patrick Cowley we had a musical genius - creativity at its zenith. Dance/energy music which was just as good to sit and LISTEN to, and never boring. I cannot help but wonder how his music would have evolved, had he not died in November 1982. Whatever course it had taken, I am sure he would have continued to be the best in his field. RIP a genius..
this is THE true Patrick Cowley Mix of this!! with all of his own synth overdubs. lots of other mixes floating around purporting to be the mix by him that are not the real mix by Da Man!! Hot Tracks were the only one to release his own real mix. This is exactly how it starts too ...thrown right in at the start. Its easy to tell PCs real mix as it doesn't have the minor note in the lead riff every second time round...he plays it straight. All the other pressings and versions that say "Patrick Cowley Mix" are another producers attempt at copying his mix, but without all the synths!! Just muddying the waters. Top work for upping this!
The original "Hills of Katmandu" was created by italian producer Celso Valli using the name "Tantra" in 1979! We are listeng disco music older than 40 years old... Celso Valli was a fucked Genius!
My Top Disco Songs of All Time: 1) Tantra - Hills of Katmandu 2) Donna Summer - MacArthur Park Suite 3) Dan Hartman - Vertigo/Relight My Fire 4) Patrick Cowley - Menergy 5) Thelma Houston - Don't Leave Me This Way
I swear to God, Patrick cowley was waaay ahead of his time. This type of mix by the mid 90's would be called trance. It still contains some disco elements.. but subtle.
yes, i'm in a trance, it's the early 80's and i'm snorting, drinking, puffing, giving fashion and having way too much fun. great song to sweat until you get wet!
GENIAL .
Patrick Cowley was a genius who left us far too soon. This mix took us on a trip on the dance floor to the darker sleazier hills of Katmandu. The pretty pop vocal refrains were eliminated purposely as they broke that dark spell. If you want that version - which is beautiful - then listen to the original. Something for everyone.
RIP Patrick Cowley! His remix are just awesome. I found that one following links from his legendary remix of Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder "I feel love". This is f.... brilliant!
Im telling you.... The BREAK was great commercially....BUT The TANTRA album with the "Hills Of Katmandu" is a musically orchestrated masterpiece!!! DEAL WITH IT! NOTE: IF YOU LIKE/LOVE KATMANDU SEE: Patrick Cowley - MENERGY.
I recall listening to this in my bedroom, dancing with headphones on. The year was 1978. I was in my senior year in high school and had just come out of the closet. This was one of my favorites.
HUH? Where's the chorus?? After the long, dark and sweaty build up it's an unexpected left turn into an oasis of prettiness and melody (yes, a little corniness too) before it transforms back into the twisted instrumental groove & outro. It's a perfect contrast - so corny that it works. Stand in the middle of the floor while this edit and the other version plays and compare the reactions. ;) Reminds me of a certain remix of Cerrone's "Supernature" where the producer completely omitted the uplifting keyboards from the climax. Those major chords both elevated and resolved the track musically. Without them, it's just a (great) dark track. *rant over*

He is the Creator God of EDM.
Gracias!
Surely the greatest of all the disco mega mixes. The Tantra original was great but this megamix is mind-blowing.
I have the original. A friend of mine back in the day said BUY IT, it will be a classic someday. And he was right. I have a few of Patrick Cowley's records too. A musical genius.
