FUN FACTS 4 FANATICS OF FUN FACTS: Sylvester definitely owed a debt of gratitude to Patrick Cowley. For Sylvester's 2nd album for Fantasy Records- STEP II, he recorded "Dance (Disco Heat)" and "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)". It was good, but Marty Blecman felt it needed a little more glitter, so he had Patrick Cowley add what Marty called sound effects but what Patrick called "Layering synths" over the tracks of both "Dance DH" & "You MMFMR", and viola' 2 disco hits were born and went on to be classics. For Sylvester's next album, they didn't really have material ready, so again Marty called in Patrick and Patrick brought to the table 2 songs ready to go- "STARS" was a song written as an instrumental theme for a big party being held on the docks in San Fran that Patrick was helping to organize. The party went on but the theme song wasn't used. So Patrick wrote lyrics for it and had another instrumental called "I Need Somebody Tonight", which Sylvester wrote the lyrics for and viola' 2 songs ready to record. The other 2 songs for the album were- "Body Strong" which Sylvester wrote with a friend, and a cover of a song that Sylvester was already doing live in his concerts- " I (Who Have Nothing)". So you see, Patrick saved the day once again. Sylvester went on to record 3 more albums for Fantasy, and when the last one "Sell My Soul" had dismal sells, Fantasy requested that if Sylvester wanted to renew his contract he would have to come in and audition for it. Tha nerve I tell ya! Sylvester wanted to leave Fantasy for awhile anyway, so he chose to not audition. Patrick then came to the rescue with yet another instrumental, a tune called "Menergy" (written by Marty Blecman & Patrick Cowley)- from Patrick's 1981 Fusion Records debut. Sylvester simply wrote lyrics to it and BAM! Slyvester was back in the game with what kicked off his first big Hi-Energy song for the 80's as a 12" single. Marty Blecman and Patrick decided to form Megatone records and Patrick re-recorded his debut album for Megatone and both Marty & Patrick went to work to find material for Sylvester's Megatone debut album- in the mean time, Sylvester released a second 12" single "Do Ya Wanna Funk?" with Patrick. Well, Marty & Patrick didn't have far to look for more material because Patrick had written an album's worth of songs for a new singer named Gwen Jonae, but since she decided to act like a Diva and demand a $5,000 fur coat, Marty & Patrick took her material, stripped the vocals and Sylvester recorded the songs as his, added "Do Ya Wanna Funk", and viola' the album "ALL I NEED" was born. Once again, Patrick saved the day. Patrick & Sylvester. Two friends who made a name for themselves together. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜💙💚💛🧡❤
Thers nothing better than being flying around under the roof at 3 o´clock at night, listening to fab tunes from the legendary mr. cowley. I Loooooove it
Exactamente 40 años antes de ahora.... Que esta gran rola la baile en. Las discos... Una de las mejores de toda esa época... Eso era cantar y saber tocar.. Gracias Dios.
I remember this song he was singing at the Palace in Paris in new year 1979 Patrick was w him sylvester was big that time many french where thinking he was a woman LOL gee so long ago and I did the gay Parade 1982 in SF w him he was in a green rolls convertible and I was a nun lol w the famons sisters of perpetual indulgence I did see him again on castro street fair and I did see him again wen he did the last parade he was on a whell chair so close to go I miss him a lot he is so underrated !!!!!!!! he was so nice LOL I;m an old queen now 64 but a live LOL
For this record Patrick introduced for first time the synthesizer sound, which was strange for those times. Note the sounds effects added. Patrick surely performed his Pro One synth.
What a great song - and what a tragedy that there isn't one live performance of Stars by Sylvester anywhere on TH-cam. Surely he and the Two Tons must have performed it live at least once, somewhere?
Have to ask - why is there NO video footage anywhere on TH-cam, after all these decades, of Sylvester's live concert with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra? And no video or sound footage anywhere of Sylvester performing "Stars" live? The San Francisco concert was such a high profile event at the time, someone somewhere had to film it - and among Sylvester's songs, this (seguing into "Body Strong") also must have been performed live at some point in his career.
Listened to that record so many times. I visualize that concert in my head, I imagine it. But I really would love to see footage. 'You Are My Friend' must have been wonderful to witness.
If you're referring to his concert at the War Memorial Opera House, he performed the Stars album in it's entirety. Interestingly enough, only Body Strong made it on the Living Proof album which was recorded that night. I would love to hear the other three cuts, especially I (Who Have Nothing).
super Patrick & Sylvester ..love this version ,my lp 0f 1979 printed in Italy has with a diffrent version af all songs ..some bad guitats addictions and the sleeve pic doen't have the little sylver stars in the left corner ......just saying
All those nights so long ago 😎
