Just discovered Fruhbeck de Burgos's Beethoven recordings. Great. Thanks. In the early 1970s, I saw/heard him conduct the 8th w/the Dallas Symphony. He dropped his baton, at some point, and recovered it more gracefully than I ever could have imagined. The 8th rolled on. A classy conductor!
I disagree. For a few reasons. Firstly though, to ME he matured musically on the 5th. Where he accepted his deafness. NOT that he also became honest with it, that's a different story all together. And the with-coming anger, frustrations, ... . Also he matured sound wise, earlier works give me a feeling of a tempered still Beethoven. As if the "musical geniuses" still held him back, like his father did. But his father held him violently back, also another story all together. Beethoven's life was one of poverty, sickness, violence early on (his deafness came from the beatings by his father earlier on), a lost love due to a storm, in short, one of major dramatic events, which makes me KNOW, Beethoven was the TRUE genius, not Mozfart. Without Beethoven, modern music would not exist, we'd all be still listening to Salieri and the lot of hoompapa composers/conductors.
