Without a doubt the best explanation of how a shotgun works that I’ve ever heard. Too many people worry about how much power they can get that they blow their load. Lol. Keep doing what you’re doing Blackie. I grew up on an old 20 gauge single shot that always did what I needed it to.

Can't attest to this from personal experience, but watched another muzzleloader who used 1/2 of a cushion wad for medium to heavy loads. He said he was getting blown patterns that he initially blamed on the overshot card. But then he discovered that the pellets were embedding themselves into the cushion wad. Apparently the extra weight from the embedded lead kept up the inertia of the wad, and that was what was blowing his patterns. Still uses 1/2 cushion wads, but places an overshot card on top before loading shot. Said his blown patterns disappeared. Thought I'd relay this to you in case you wanted to investigate it.

Blackie, you are definitely the man....I have been watching your videos for a long, long time. I am well into black powder shotguns and revolvers now in my tenth decade...and just love it. My shotguns are 12 gauge cylinder bore vintage muzzle loading shotguns. Here is how I load and get good well distributed and consistent patterns. Powder down and always use 1FG which I make myself....ball of wasp nest tightly packed....two stiff cards cut from waxed mild cartons.....shot and usually more shot than powder....then of course, a card over the shot. I never use nitro cards or fiber cushion cards because they are heavy and add weight to the load that the powder will be pushing....and can fly thorough the shot and disrupt the pattern....and pressure is vented through the nipple orifice making a cushion wad unnecessary to protect the shot from set back. And of late, I have learned that a fiber wad soaked in olive oil or any other vegetable oil and loaded over the shot card will give tighter patterns....called the Skychief load....have no idea why it works but it does in my old guns. Keep up the very good work, and what I would give for your hat. Take care and Happy New Year to you and yours!!!

I have my grandfather old black powder double barrel cap lock with rabbit ear hammer's. My grandfather was born in 1892 and in 1974 just before he passed and joined the lord he taught me a lot about loading the double barrel about powder volume and shot weight and about the black powder wad over the powder and they are many different volumes of powder and shot and shot size. But the thing about something special I learned from him for the shot measure and what he made to put his shot in . He used a dowel rod that was marked on the dowel rod and he had one end for full choke and one for modified bore on the dowel rod and the ends of the dowel rod had a 5/16 or a little better deep hole in it. And the hole diameter looks like a 5/16th in. He taught me to roll pieces of cut grocery store paper bags to the right size and roll the paper around the dowel rod really snug and then tuck the paper in the hole in the tip of the dowel rod and he had it figured out how long the tube of paper should be for the shot load we were making and it was about 1and half inch more than the shot dept in the paper tube. We would pull the paper tube off the dowel rod and pour in the shot and my grandfather showed my how to properly fold the end of the paper tube of shot. Well he made his own paper tube with shot in them a peice of maple wood and he drilled 15 Hole's with a forstner drill bit just a slight bigger around than the shot tubes just a 1/16 th in . Bigger and Left it where the paper tube was about 3/4 in . Taller than wood block with holes in it and he made a lid out of maple 2 inch thick with holes drilled with a forstner drill bit just a little bigger and the lid had two hinges and a latch on the front of the shot and paper tube holder. He said that powder wad will blow a hole through your shot like a hole in a steel washer . So we put the powder wad a cushion wad and when you put these paper shot tubes in the barrel about a inch from the muzzle go ahead and cap it with the over shot wad and push it all the way down to the wad and powder and I did that and he taught me to load and shoot that black powder double barrel when I was 10 year's old. He always hunted turkey 🦃 and he taught me you can use two raps of paper of the grocery store bags and your shot will open up a little bit sooner but still have a pretty good group of shot. And he said for him shooting turkey 🦃 he likes to use 4 raps of paper to 5 raps because he wanted the most shot in a wad because a turkey head not very big and that's what he was aiming for and I have to say just one time I went turkey hunting and sit there with him and I have to say that old double barrel shotgun with the burly walnut stock and foregrip darn near took that turkeys gobbler clean off and we were probably 25 yards and that is a one time experience I hope I never forget! My grandfather before I could go hunting turkey with him. He told me I couldn't speak or talk to anyone for a whole week and I did just that so I could go with him and learn something from him and what to do when that goblet came out and wait for the right moment and boy I was nervous and I couldn't get my heart to slow down. I thought that old turkey was going to get run off from the sound of my heart . But grandfather blasted him a good one. He told me his daddy taught him how to make paper shot tubes for the shot because they didn't have plastic shot gun wads back then. If you want your shot to go further and in a tighter group use more raps and he had powder charge's and shot weights of different size shots written down on paper and how many raps of paper for each type of hunting. He gave me the old double barrel shotgun and I have it just as clean as it was in 1975 when he passed away just a few months after he gave me the black powder double barrel shotgun with rabbit ear hammer's. MR.BLACKIE I hope and pray that you will make a dowel rod paper tube like I decided to you and a solid peice of wood drilled out for 15 or 20 paper shot tubes and lid with hinges and latche and a leather shoulder strap. I believe it would look very nice to cover the wood block that holds paper tubes and shot . Cover it with some nice looking old leather a reddish brown color maybe. I hope you try the paper tubes and shot and the right size dowel rod or wood broom handle and see how it works. Love your videos and may GOD bless you and your family.

Thank you Blackie. Dave's videos were good but yours is better.
I use natural unfiltered wool for my wadding, your mileage may vary but its worked well for me. I also cut my own leather wads for overpowder wad. It has worked very well for me. I only use the leather with shot. Balls and minies just wool over the top, no over powder wad. Seems to pattern better for me. Typical heavy load for me is 100 grains of ffg swiss. I run 60-70 behind a 580 grain minie. Just got a 20 gauge fusil de chasse from TVM
Muzzleloading shotguns are just so vastly versatile. Hard to cover everything with them. I do the same thing with my wads, absolutely 5/8".
Ive been tempted to make up paper cartridges for my 20 gauge with shot and slugs honestly.

And use a 2 inch piece of patching or a cup I make out heavy paper with slits in it havent shot ball out of them cause they are originals from 1800s I carry speed loaders that are pill bottles with the lids that will screw on to each other can't wait to see the next video god bless you

Small correction, a dram is a unit of weight. This is obvious for a couple reasons: well grains are a unit of weight right? and the volume of 27.3438 grains of gunpowder is of course not going to be the same as the volume of that much #8 shot, so a 'dram' cannot be used to measure volume unless it's given as "drams of something." This is a super common misconception that stems from black powder substitutes and their loads being given in terms of "volume of x grains of black powder."

How about me a short single shot shotgun and do mine the same way Dave Canterbury does his except I use wool. Now I have shot cards and wads if I run out of wool I can also reload shells in the field. I got one of those gun adapters from gun adapters but my 209 primers will not fit it nor will they fit the shotgun shell that I cut down so I've had to drill them out and the reason I drilled them out is because I bought a mess of those things I believe around 700. They say shotgun primers and I don't know why they don't fit but they don't. Thanks Blackie for the video it was very interesting I've never seen a black powder shotgun except for double barrel. Keep ye powder dry!

Is it possible to make military style cartridges for this? Or does the separate loading facilitate better performance?
    Thank you.

Can i use bird loads in a rifle barrel?

If the pellets are made of lead you can but if there made of something harder they'll wear away the rifling

Can you load buckshot in a muzzleloader that's smooth bore?
I have a single shot shotgun that has a muzzleloader conversion insert. And want to use it for deer with 000 buck.
    Any ideas on this?

I have a pendersoli double barrel 20 gauge I love but I’m interested in buying some more affordable black powder muzzle loading shotguns. But can’t seem to find much of anything online besides pendersoli selling them

Seems sort of complicated. I'm brand new to muzzleloader shotgun use. I got a lot to learn.

The double barrels are very expensive sometimes I find some of their fair condition but that single is more interesting to me if you ever get one or get rid of it let me know

Use . BBs in stead of lead shot less toxic and you can use the shot cup used in a modern shotgun or 2 felt wads

So I hunt regular rifle season with a muzzleloader. But during Spring Turkey Season I use TSS.
Does anyone know if I can use Tungsten # 9 shot in a Muzzleloading shotgun?
Goal would be to match a 3 inch / 2oz load in a modern shell.
