I mean, sure. As far as mainstream thrash goes Slayer was on top. There are some way more brutal thrash bands, Demolition Hammer - Epidemic Of Violence is regarded as the heaviest/most brutal thrash album ever. In recent years Power Trip had some pretty brutal shows as well. Not trying to belittle Slayers legacy or influence, just trying to highlight some bands that aren't in the main stream category of Thrash.

Yep, just keep in mind, they're not glorifying it, they're exposing it. I was horrified by this song when I first heard it about 35 years ago or whatever, but when I actually read through the lyrics, I realized it's like a history lesson put to music. An incredibly dark and disturbing history, but history never the less. It reminded me of the famous quote "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it."

A little ditty, as you rightly said, about Dr Josef Mengele. There is a lot of Nazism referenced in Slayer's canon - Jeff Hannemann (RIP) was so well read in the subject. They got a load of shit about being Nazis when in reality they were just putting the message out there about the Holocaust in their own inimitable style (Tom Araya Vocals and Bass is one of the nicest, softly spoken guys you could meet). Go check out the lyrics AND the studio version. And for info - I visited Bergen Belsen years ago - one of the most humbling experiences of my life.

I think this is my new favorite reaction, Lilly Jane!! And the occasion for it was just perfect. No one tells a story like Slayer! Contrary to average belief, they must be the most anti war, anti cruelty band, especially in their genre. Exposing the horrors and ugliness of war, torture, murder and other evils that humans do to each other. And Slayer does it so effectively, bringing their point across so bluntly in your face, in a manner of a shock. Add the amazing level of musical performance. Unnerving, menacing riffs, off key screaming solos, and thrashing, second to none...
For next Slayer songs, besides Raining Blood, I recommend Chemical Warfare - really the one song that signified Slayer moving onto serious topics. I also suggest you do Repentless, an awesome song from their most recent (2015) studio album by the same title. I'd definitely also look into South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss albums, there're quite a few of great songs there. Looking forward to more Slayer! 🤘😖

You owe it to yourself to listen to the studio track on Reign In Blood. The initial scream is blood curdling!
In fact, that entire album is possibly the most aggressive displays ever recorded, and capped at the beginning with Angel Of Death, and at the end with the equally epic Raining Blood. It set the standard for extreme Metal, that, to be honest, I dont know if its ever been topped. Sure, I know, everyone will argue that tons of bands tried to be more extreme, but to my ears, I’ll argue that it just never quite worked. Reign In Blood is still the most epic, most Extreme Metal album ever created, if for no other reason, than they were the first, and at best, Ill allow that others may have matched it, but they never topped it. I would recommend it as a full album review…. If you think you can handle 26 minutes solid of pure aggressive adrenaline.

They actually had played 11 songs BEFORE Angel of Death including Disciple, War Ensemble, Payback, Hell Awaits and 7 others... They were on FIRE at this show. I know because I was there. There was a lot of controversy about this song, their original label wouldn't even release it. To be clear, it's not a pro-Nazi or anti-Jewish song, it's just a recounting of the evil atrocities that happened. I thought that a live version might be a bit much for a first timer but this performance was pretty clear and understandable. I still recommend you check out the album version as well, though. It was an integral part of the education back then to visit a concentration camp when we were around 12 yrs old, at that age quite a shocking experience. One day, I stumbled across a video of Slayer performing at some Hollywood event, and I was disgusted by the way the audience reacted - having fun, mocking heavy metal etc. But Slayer did a great thing with this song -- they created a memorial of the events in their own way. A really shocking song, extremely well though t through, and as brutal as the events they are singing about.

I saw Slayer in Germany on the 9th of May in 1987 (Reign in Blood tour) and it was mindblowing. I'm 53 now and was 17 back then.

Yes 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 Angel of Death it's definitely Slayer's most aggressive song. Tom Araya was raised Catholic so there are many songs in Slayers catalog that speak to religion. In particular the atrocities of human history.
I'm excited for Raining Blood 🤘🤘🤘 another staple from Slayer that song is inspired by biblical text of the war in heaven. Other great songs are 213, War Ensemble, Dead Skin Mask, South of Heaven, and Disciple 🤘🤘🤘🤘

You couldn't have picked a better song. Slayer is without a doubt the kings of thrash. "Hell awaits " is an awesome song and awesome album. "Evil has no boundaries" is another great one. Actually you could throw a dart at slayer titles and whatever you hit is going to blow you away. Love your channel and you did a great job on reviewing Angel of death!

When this came out, we all knew what it was about.
    Education has been dumbed down.
And, contrary to what my mom thought, Slayer never glorified the evil that their songs were about.
She was in her 60s before I showed her an interview with Tom, at home with his family.. 😂

"Angel Of Death" was talked of not being on their semiole ep "Rein In Blood" for obvious provokative lyrics. The existence of the song, when the PMRC was in full effect is a testament to Slayer's uncompromising process:) This song is what made "Rein In Blood" their game changer. Yeah, "Raining Blood" is a great next choice for slayer. If I might make a suggestion for "Wake Up" Live at the Moore, by Mad Season, with the G.O.A.T. on lead vocals. That whole concert is legendary. Thank You

Slayer- At Dawn They Sleep, live video is VHS Full intrusion. It is simply better than the album version, and I say that as someone who usually prefers the album versions.
Imo is is amongst the most underrated. Other excellent songs include:
    Black Magic
    Metal storm/face the slayer
    Necrophiliac
There’s others, but those options don’t get reviewed too often

I remember the first time I heard Slayer. I seen them on their Reign In Blood tour. My buddy asked me if I wanted to go see Slayer. I was like sure, but who's Slayer? We took a couple hits of Acid, and drank a 1/2 gallon of Even Williams just for fun and went to the shown. I thought I was being assaulted by the wall of wonderful, beautiful noise that penetrated my soul. I have never been the same... lol...

I wrote to denote you have my vote that you devote another whole online post, just like this one (2.0), except while witnessing rap act: Public Enemy, their track "She Watch Channel Zero" is a hip-hop attack on someone's loss of feminine attributes and persona due to the allowance of fictional dramatic presentations (i.e., "soaps") to eclipse reality, which Chuck D. spelled out over the repeating apex of the "Angel of Death" (@2:36) guitar break combined with a slower bass-based drumbeat, included on the P.E. album, "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" released in '88, three years after the release of the SLAYER album "Reign In Blood" you have just been initiated to...in my youth, devoted to the hope of playing percussion professionally with my own band with a few of my friends, we collectively chose P.E.'s "Channel Zero" as one of our cover songs (I was to spew forth Flavor Flav's judgemental proclamations while simultaneously keeping the bass-heavy drumbeat on time, although I intended to alter some details and references, changing them to include my own experiences as a Native American with the local (Bellingham, WA, as far North and West as you can get in the Lower 48) municipal Police force, most often racially-biased, accusatory harassment directed at me from some true pigs in my district, which my White friends in the band and on the streets witnessed in person, so much, so often, and always begun with such obvious prejudicial "profiling", over and over and over again, over a span of enough years and to the degree that I was teasingly dubbed a "Get Out of Jail" (or "Escape From Any Traffic Ticket") card, should I be a passenger and they get pulled over, which expanded to "She...Zero" being my fallback karaoke choice many times (long after the band dissolved) and I repeatedly nailed it, head-to-toe, rapping both Chuck and Flav's parts facing a room full of incredulous and shocked strangers, many times on a Sunday, while wearing one of my SLAYER "God Hates Us All" tour shirts.....but all you have to do is turn it up to 11🤘

The line "Human mice for the Angel of death" always stood out to me. I've always wondered if it was in any way a reference to Maus, the graphic novel that tells the story of the holocaust with the jews depicted as mice and the nazis as evil cats, which came out the same year as this album.
