A delightful yarn--thanks for posting! One detail that added to the Golden Screen Era features is the orchestral background music. Kudos to Messrs. Lange & Newman for their artistic talent in this picture. And, of course, Miss Caufield, Mr. Niven, Miss Bavier, et al. gave stellar performances. Some of the zany scenes resembled many teen comedy movies of the last 40 years--a rarity in earlier decades!
Zany, light hearted, fun but complicated. Loved it. Great movie to watch at Valentine's. ♥️👏

"Battle of the sexes" really isn't even good as a metaphor. Men and women constitute a natural system with their interests basically the same. The film is less about "feminism" than it is about a dogmatic abstinence.
@@denisenoe3702 I can't see the word "feminism" in my comment and I certainly do not recall any feminist stance in THE LADY SAYS NO. Thankfully, David Niven's polished performance with the ladies - in real life and in the movies - gives a good image to the male, while Caulfield rates eye candy and has a ready answer to Niven's moves. The lady says no is a fitting title and the film good fun!

I think David Niven, an accomplished actor, was miscast in this film. He just looks too old for the part. He also sometimes seems bored. They needed a handsome young hunk to play the photographer. Joan Caulfield is indeed eye candy.

This actress reminds me somewhat of Elizabeth Montgomery...Bewitched. I also don't recall seeing David Niven playing such a physical role as this; I remember him as the super suave & debonair sophisticated man. I enjoyed this movie....Thanks..!!

Watch the 1960s original Pink Panther film with David Niven. He did a few very funny physical scenes in that film.

The first movie with David Niven I watched where he is older. Very charming. Great Britain produced so many great Hollywood actors - David Niven, Leslie Howard, Basil Rathbone, Bob Hope.... amazing.
His age sometimes worked against his being right for this particular character. When the pair are having their "romantic evening," David Niven looks very old and unattractive in the background.

1951....a very good year. Love the hood ornament on the Chrysler Imperial. A graceful swan contemplating flight. Exemplifies the story here, ONLY when it's time has arrived will it happen. You can't force a rose to bloom before it's time, but you can create the right environment. All is fair in love and war.
There used to be an old couple in the neighborhood back in the day (1980s) that had his and her matching cream-colored 1951Chevy Belair convertibles with red interiors. I drooled each time the garage door was raised. They bought them new that year... the year they were married.
So now we finally see what Aunt Bee was doing before taking care of Andy & Opie.

I remember, once upon a time it was legal to drive like that. 8 people or even more in a little car without seat-belt! and they even drove safely, without causing any accident. All changed in the late 1980s.
Good old days...
Today everyone is paranoid, only 4 or 5 people allowed in a car, with mandatory seat-belts. Yet, we have more accidents than ever since cars were invented.

Actually, they DIDN'T drive safely, which was why things like lap belts, shoulder belts, and safety glass became law.
Cars were a lot slower then.

@@bradmiller2329 Actually what happened is that the insurance industry found out that if the person was trapped in the car they usually died instead of costing them millions of dollars in reconstructive surgery and this is why they lobbied our laws to change it so now they no longer have to pay if you don't have your seat belt on has nothing to do with any safety at all.
@@sandrastanislav2656 Sadly, I have no trouble believing that! But it raises the question -- with the "new" car laws, (ultralight build to get the required MPG) -- if you are wearing your belt, and still get mangled, how will that affect the insurnace companies?
My parents owned a camera like the one used on the beach - didn't use it but I used to play with it in 1969.
This movie is one of those "Battle of the Sexes" films delightfully acted out in a whimsical manner.

Loved the speeding scenes with trailer doing U-ies, and veering around curves. They sure don't make 'em like they used to. Makes me want to see "The Long Trailer" with Lucy and Desi again!

RW --- Many of the stars at that time had seen the rougher side of life and truly appreciated how lucky they were to be making money and living in California when it was the golden state.

I agree with you about Joan Caulfield. I actually watched the movie for Peggy Maley who plays Midge. Maley is also lovely and a fine actress as well. There's a bit of a problem with the casting of David Niven. He really seemed a bit too old and tired for his role. His acting veers with it sometimes seeming he is bored with the project.

Funny, entertaining movie with an important message. Women and men need to learn each other's love language. What one woman may like does not speak for all women.
This mediocre film is important for the sorts of wrong predictions it made. It actually makes good sense that "feminism" would ally with sexual conservatism and an abstinence message. But the feminism that emerged in the 1970s was to some degree hijacked by sexual "liberation" and had the opposite message to "The Lady Says No." The contrast between what the film thought a feminist movement would look like and what it did look like is valuable.

I was born in 1951, and saw this based on that curiosity. Well, the whole movie was pretty much as infantile as I was then. I did though enjoy some of the nostalgia, and by the end it did pull on my heart strings, resolving the war of the sexes' folly with something a little wiser, and sounder. It still had the corny manner and methods they began in the 30s, which is always a historical kick to observe.
I agree. Seemed like 7th grade juvenile drama. But in a more simpler an innocent time. It fit. Always adored David Niven...

It is a poor movie of historical significance because it predicted a feminism opposite the one that actually came into existence.

@@davidparker2173 The predicted feminism was a pro-abstinence, sexually conservative feminism. This makes sense! Women who fear or hate men should, naturally enough, keep them at a distance. However, 1970s feminism was in the wake of The Pill and Masters and Johnson's "discoveries" of female greater sexual capacity. I put discoveries in quotes because it was known in ancient Greece and known to any teen girl who spends a lot of time in her room. But this caused an link between feminism and sexual "liberation."
Watched this because I thought it was the original of "Down with Love." How wrong I was.

The underlying issues, feminist extremism, and recognising when one is in love, is as much a social problem today as then, probably more so.
Gordan Frickers just proves once again that human beings do not change over time. Clothes, music and cars may, but the human condition has and will always stay the same.
@Gordon; the character played by Niven represents the conundrum viewed by that era, and existing today, that when a woman says 'NO', it's not perceived as actual and a bit of 'romance' will change her mind. The reality - when ANYONE (woman or man) says 'NO', it is to be taken as such v laughingly overridden. The premise of the title reinforces the idea that 'No' doesn't mean NO, that it's a game that favors the power of the male dominant character - in actuality, many sexual assault cases include the woman saying 'NO' but overwhelmed by the male perpetrator regardless of how the woman repeats 'NO' / struggles / tries to break free. The trivialization of this, specifically the belief that 'she's just saying NO, she really wants it' (uninvited touching / kissing / groping / sex) is part of the presumed game of flirting - almost always at the expense of the woman, and in the defense of the perp's brought to trial. It's NEVER ok to push someone, regardless of gender, into sexual encounter of ANY sort when they have said 'NO', nor is it acceptable to assume that 'No' means a debatable 'Yes'.

I couldn't warm to Jane Caulfield's character at all, from start to finish. But love James Robertson Justice as the Uncle. Especially as he was portrayed in the dream scene - wonderful!

An oddity about this film is that it predicted a pro-abstinence, sexually conservative feminism. That's not the feminism that came into being in the 1970s. The '70s feminism emerged in the aftermath of The Pill & the studies of Masters & Johnson so it was as far fr/"The Lady Says No!" as possible. This film is important because it points out a natural, logical link between feminism and abstinence.

Otherwise known as Women's Liberation.
The fateful year was 1968 in the USA.
Women burned their bras in the streets. Fashions changed b/c women had won equal rights, meaning the same rights as men.
So women went to work 40 hrs/wk, thus had no time to iron, have fancy hair-dos, women had to dress more like men to be taken seriously by their bosses. Also dressing more masculine meant women would be more likely to stave off sexual harassment. Also to fit in better in a man's world, women dressed more masculine.
No more femininity. Nothing feminine must remain: dresses were replaced by the pant suit. No more feminine hats, gloves, purses, belts & ruffles, lace, shaws, stoles (fur or otherwise), colors, full skirted dresses, etc.
The only things that remained, only occasionally, were hosiery & high heels.
Women wanted to change their images completely & the female Hippies helped the previously conservative woman to break out of her feminine "shell."
Also, the 1970s economy plunged into inflation so there went the expensive jewelry.
Notice in this movie that the leading lady even wore several gold & diamond barrettes in her hair.
Now women get tattoos to be just as masculine as men.
No wonder there's such identity crises & unhappiness with oneself now.

Yeah I think that was supposed to be comedic but no one is going to actually do those things. Plus, if a guy catcalled me (which is a form of harrassment and should never be seen as a compliment) I'd sooner say something to show I'm not interested. But if he then gets in my bubble like this guy does and tries to touch me, he will get hurt!
I watched this movie several years back, as a David Niven fan, and was dumbstruck by how it was clearly another Hollywood vehicle to make a star out of the young woman, and after we get that utterly awkward wooden dance in the leopard print, it immediately followed up with the black woman in the café who showed how to do it right.
I thought that was so hilarious.

@Cat Magic there are several examples of how dance was interpreted as done by white people and black people. Now the black woman here at the time was really regarded as rather clownish with her dance, while yes, the star, Joan Caufield, was supposed to be alluringly seductive and sexy. Just breaking all the taboos.
And that is about the best place to begin; with Come Back Little Sheba, where Shirley Booth is listening to the radio station, Taboo, and all of it's dark, forbidden music. Basically the music seen here in the dream.
"Crazy Legs" Rowena is also uploaded here where she appeared on You Bet Your LIfe and does an absolutely hideous gyration that was supposed to be a dance craze, I'm sure, but no way could anyone do that for a good year, tops, and I guess it is a safe bet you never saw a black person doing that.
And God's honest truth, it reminded me of the dances cartoon characters used to do around that time. I thought to myself, huh, it was a real dance.
One bit I always found too funny, and I haven't seen the movie after one viewing, was Doris Day in Teacher's Pet singing "I'm the Girl Who Invented Rock and Roll".
First off, it was hardly a 'hound-dog, crockin' song, but it was supposed to make her come across as an incredibly daring woman, way too bold and sassy for any man to control. She would have been better off going for Que sera sera.
When the white women behaved like this, they were shocking, "well, I never!" stuff, supposed to upset granma. And be all the more enticing for the guys wanting that bad girl. Such was the case here with Caufield. This was supposed to 'launch' her as a star, but obviously that never happened.
Niven was miscast. A younger actor was needed to show the feminist-abstinence teacher the error of her ways.
I also wondered who that lady was. She is not credited so her name is apparently lost to us.

The film is important precisely because it predicted a feminism allied with sexual abstinence. The premise if more than a bit outlandish as no book promoting abstinence would become a runaway best-seller nor would women en mass adopt celibacy just because an author pushed it. Another way the film was off is that it predicted a feminist movement composed of stout hair-in-a-bun cat ladies who stay home and knit when they aren't advising women to Just Say Not.
Even Niven admitted that this was a dreadful movie . Still, it’s years , furlongs and fathoms better than the trash of today , so…..thank you Pizza Flix.

I doubt the costumer got much work after this. From failing to cover a zipper in back adequately, to those terrible darts, he didn't know what he was doing.

A funny film, great...
Looks like it was filmed on location at the now closed Fort Ord, California and in the Monterey and Carmel areas.
It will inevitably be bought on the QT by the banks in China, like all the rest of coastal North America.
The base has a college now, my daughter attended.. we grew up in this area.. cool weather.. missing it.. even in Hawaii... If you ever visit, check out Point Lobo's, Big Sur, Cannery row & Carmel Highlands... so beautiful..
Someone should write a sex manual entitled "27 Way To Say Yes" and sign it "Dorinda Hatch."
David Niven's age is really apparent in parts of the "romantic evening" scene. You see him in the back and he doesn't look at all like the young stud who will sweep Miss Just Say No off her feet but an aged and tired fellow.

A tween movie by today's standards except for a couple of double entendre lines that SHOULD go over their heads. Meh to Ok movie. Interesting in that it documents society in the past. The actress is eye candy with planned personability. I thought the best part was her reaction to the drink.

Suppose Niven needed the money
He certainly did. He walked out on Samuel Goldwyn after he felt he was being loaned out too many times, and not given enough opportunities to demonstrate his versatility in any of Sam's films. Niven believed Goldwyn privately "sabotaged" his reputation in Hollywood......and as a result, he appeared in films like this to stay afloat financially. In 1952, Dick Powell invited him to form "Four Star Television" with Charles Boyer, and participate in their first TV series, "FOUR STAR PLAYHOUSE". Niven soon became one of the leading performers in that anthology, and never looked back.
