The Most EXPENSIVE Model That I've Painted.

- I've been painting minis for a long time, and most of the models I paint are pretty cheap, but this time, well this is a collectors item, from a long time ago. The rarity and age of this model makes it quite expensive, even ignoring the cost of the company that made it.
But unlike the average collector, who will hide a model away and waste its potential, I'm a painter, and I'll paint this thing.

Your video pushed me to repaint my gaunt's ghosts kit!
Really love seeing classic models like this actually painted. Love it.
Don't say you are a bad painter. You say yourself that you can see improvements from earlier paint jobs and I agree. A painter that is improving and trying new things is a Good painter. You tried some cold colors in the shadows this time and probably learned a lot from it. When it comes to the camo I think a simpler camo like the one you painted look way better on miniatures than to try and replicate a real world military camouflage pattern. You are a brave painter and with that you will continue evolve.
If I am to give one tip it is to use sharp tipped brushes for the details. Keep the paint out of the ferrule and clean out any tried paint you have there. I think you can re vitalize your existing brushes by using some strong paint remover and carefully clean the brush. Then use some brush soap to recondition the bristles. Always leave the brushes with some brush soap in the bristles shaped to a fine tip to dry when you are done painting.
Looks good! But I think it needs a varnish to tone down the glossy finish on some of the material. An all over matte varnish and then a selective gloss varnish on things like the power sword will really help the uniforms look like they’re made of cloth and the sword look like it’s a shiner material.
That's just how it looks on my camera. I use the mattest clear coat I can find and this is the effect it gives with the camera I use.
(I cannot afford better cameras, certainly not after buying this model :P )
@@EDSKaR you may want to turn down the exposure on your camera or use a different light
@@EDSKaR try diffusing your light, you can tape a paper towel over it - that's what I used to do with my old, crappy one-point desk lamp
Wow, just seeing that separate Lasgun... I can actually smell superglue and frustration.
Takes me right back...
@@Haplo699g I have gotten into the habbit of washing metal models, it does help.
There are some companies making fantastic modern metal models, well worth a look.
@@EDSKaR Pinning helps.
@@TheDerwish not dropping the model is also helpful...
I have a couple of these Black Library vignettes. They were hard to get for me, the window to order was usually closed by the time my magazine arrived from GW. Usually a frantic call across the pond netted my model. I remember this offer, but i passed. I got Ephrael Stern, Kal Jerico, Klovis the Redeemer and a couple others. Mine are still unpaintec, but they will be painted. Retirement is almost here.
@@ironbomb6753 Saving them for later, good plan!
@@EDSKaR yes, I want to savor every brush stroke. Earning a living cuts into my happy time! Lol ❤😉
Ahhh! The good ol' Warhammer Copium! Making you pretend that you're going to paint EVERY model in your pile of shame! lmao!
1 simple step to elevate the piece: matt varnish 😊
Thank you for sharing!
@@minipaintingforyou this piece has a matte varnish... Juat my camera and light setup makes it look glossier than it really is.:(
@@EDSKaR oh, wow. That‘s crazy!
@@EDSKaR Really shouldn't do that if it was properly matte varnished, models look fine at first then when you show a finished model it looks glossy as can be.
Honestly could be that your idea of matte is what we think of as satin, but that absolutely isn't matte, matte doesn't reflect light like that.
Matte surface is rough, gloss is flat. gloss reflects light and matte absorbs it outside light of the same color, so red reflects red. your sheen is on every colour. It objectivelly isn't matte, it just can't be scientifically.
What you have here is probably a matte varnish that has gone bad or been applied improperly or too many times.
I varnish paintings almost daily for customers before sending them the paintings they bought, so I take this stuff pretty seriously as I don't want to be out money. I varnish gloss then matte afterwards for minis, miniature matte varnishes are absolute nightmares tho, comes with the cheap price I guess. For paintings I use something similar to acrylic medium instead of gloss varnish then follow up with a matte varnish.
For miniatures that will be held tho, a gloss coat is recommended and then a matte varnish. Gloss protects, Matte makes it look good.
Do let the gloss varnish dry for a few days before applying the matte varnish, there is a difference between dry and set.
Because in your finished results you can see the light reflecting, but also on other videos you see the paint gloss but wherever you add stuff like snow texture effects/white pigment powder, it doesn't, so it's not the camera.
And legit, you don't need to thin with inks, one great thing about moving to professional painting on canvas is how much of the bs I learnt in this hobby that has been dispelled.
If you are seeing an improvement mixing inks in, throw the paints out and use better paints. I'd recommend ak interactive 3rd gen, they were acceptable for miniature paints, well rounded and little issues with them. Tho if you are up for using HBA's, just use liquitex pro heavy bodied acrylics, takes some getting used to but the results are really good.
You should also give yourself credit, your not a bad painter, I just think you want to paint a bit faster than you could so your results are only held back by the time you put it, which isn't to say they look bad, I liked your miniature painting. But your clearly getting messed over by the matte varnish somehow.
Tho do take better care of your brushes :P
amazing. Loved the Gaunt's Ghost series and always dreamed of one day painting them up but never had the funds growing up to undertake such a project. Might need to revisit this as an adult! Thanks for the inspiration
You know it's expensive when it gets the white gw cardboard box...
Love it! Super glad you took the huge step in painting this! I highly recommend putting a black rim around, well, the rim of the base so the eyes are more drawn to the beauty of everything else
@@yesitsluke2869 there is no base rim. Its detailed all the way down.
Nice…and thanks for the ink in paint tip.
Great job! Congratulations on a rare find.
I have never seen this model before. A metal base seems wild. Has to be a heavy beast.
Very well edited and filmed video. Consider looking into really honing in on technique to elevate the painting to the same high standard! Volumetrics, finer lines, layering. It'll really make it pop.
A realy nice model and a job on the painting...worth of a display, thank you for sharing:)
My vision is poor as well, Once I had acclimatised to it, I found that using a desk magnifying glass improved my painting not only instantly but also dramatically.
Acclimatised ?
@@parks. Yes that is the correct spelling.
@parks. As someone who also uses a desk lamp for better posture, OP is talking about how you kind of have to work differently depending on your desk magnifier setup. Hand going around the lamp to reach your palette instead of straight forwards, having tools set further back on your desk so you can still see them, and a bunch of other quality of life changes to your hobbying like that.
@@HighBeanz I use a daylight bulb in my desk lamp. It helps a lot, I am slightly colour-blind.
lovely stuff man, keep up the great work, liked and subbed.
Well done .... and love the fact you have put so much effort and love into this awesome model!!
@@ArnolddeGans Thanks! They aint perfect but I'm pretty pleased with them.
Man I’m a new sub. This was my first vid. But I can all ready see a big improvement in your art not that I have an eye for it or anything. Great video keep up the good work!
Thankyou!
I have videos going back years and I've always tried to be "Here's what I tried" rather than "I teach because I'm the best" so hopefully it's helpful for newer painters who follow along in the hobby.
Well done on the project. May i ask what painting holder you're using?
Thankyou!

Great video, really enjoyed watching. Thanks
I actually still have the old metal Gaunt's Ghosts models, I loved the book series. But wow never seen the diorama before, lucky you got your hands on one.
Really loving your painting handle
@@TheSkylaura thankyou!
Have you been using it or did you want more info? I have a video showing how I designed it.
@@EDSKaR I have never seen it before. This is the first video of yours I have ever seen.
@@TheSkylaura Cool, well then I can say welcome along!
I mentioned I have a video explaining the painting handle, that's here: th-cam.com/video/G09R6B1BPYY/w-d-xo.html
I'm overall very happy with how it came out, I've been using them for quite a few years now, which may not say much as I designed it, but it works exactly as well as I wanted it to.
Good work, mate. I was just a wee nipper when BL had these vignettes and dioramas, so the only way I'd get my hands on these is overpaying on ebay or hoping I find a recaster with one tucked into their catalogue. I have a similar sort of set in my collection, though, the Magos and his techpriest retinue from the skullz promotion back in the day, I think it was 2000 or 2001? I snagged those on ebay nearly 15 years ago now for a pretty penny and lavished them with attention, doing the best I could do. I was so proud of myself when I finished them, I stripped them down recently(took some photos beforehand as momentos!), I think my skills are developed enough to do a far better job of them again.
@@username12120 that sounds cool. Even though I was playing 40k at about this time, and reading BL books, I never knew there were dioramas until years later.
I am not really into this hobby and had the video just in my recommendations but damn! This looks really good!
@@christianjosephkarner thankyou!
It's a great hobby, i have a lot of scifi and historical stuff on the channel.
Awesome find mate, always happy to see someone finally get one of their white whales. Nice painting too! 👌
Nice model. I have never painted or assembled metal models. I noticed you didn't pin anything. Would you have pinned Gaunts raised arm, had it been a separate piece?
@@andrevandervlies5700 if you wash meal pieces then superglue usually holds small pieces like arms and infantry weapons well enough to not need pinning.
In addition this model will never see games and probably wont be transported often either. It wont be damaged sitting on a shelf.
Pinning is certainly useful for heavier or more fragoile connections
Where did you get your handle from? I love how it can move around with you while pai t to give you more control

What a find man!! Well played

@@North_Of_Nowhere I remember it... Sure as sure...
@@EDSKaR 😭😭😭
I suggest to paint the non-sculpted edge in a matte black, to avoid the metal shine distracting from the paintjob, and an overall matte finish, to cover any possible shine and to prolong the "life expectancy" of your paintjob.
There is no "non-sculpted edge" It is sculpted in detail all the way to the floor.
Awesome!!
Okay, thinning paint with ink just blew my mind. Definitly gonna try that.
I don't remember who I got it from, but it's certainly a useful technique!
where can you get the holder from as it seems more comfortable than the ones i have?
Thanks for noticing it! That handle is my own design, I have more information in another video: th-cam.com/video/G09R6B1BPYY/w-d-xo.html

I've been rocking the name Larkin for years since I read these books in high-school. The name of all mgame characters is always Larkin.
You must be mad :P
@EDSKaR hes my favorite besides Gaunt. Those books are special. Dan Abnet can be quiet dry almost Tom Clancy dry. The Gaunts ghost novels really are stand out books. The fact Larkin took down a Chaos dread still blows my mind.
I own 2 of these sets I painted the gaunt and used it in my praetorian army for decades
how much did you pay for that?
losing the lasgun is fucking depressing, my heart dropped bro

Thinning with ink? Are you insane??
Sorry, couldn't resist that 😊 It sounds very interesting, never heard of it but your explanation made much sense. Thanks for a very good/interesting video.
@@JohnR1298 I am arguably insane, but using artists inks is something I saw a few years ago and have used on a few models here and there.

Good to see some dusty old ones😅
Decent effort, I see you found the Lasgun then.
@@Bunyip_Studios thankfully I did, behind my painting table!
Good job! Base looks great! Minis good. I super don’t like the yellow on the cap, sash, and coat edge looks like pure yellow no metal. For gold, Squidmar recommends Green Stuff World’s pure metal pigments gold.
@@alistairbuckle3450 I think mixing some brown into the baselayer and using the yellow as the highlight might have suited better. It's a little abnoxiously bright yellow isn't it :D
@@EDSKaR Personally, I don't think non-metallic metals / the NMM effect displays well on anything but big weapons or armour e.g. huge swords. I think you could consider a good gold metallic paint because this model and the rest of your painting deserves it e.g. th-cam.com/video/T20e7xoUWsI/w-d-xo.html
However, I am no expert, you paint better than me, and I'm happy you painted and shared your rare model. I just think it would look even better with a decent gold pigment painted over the yellow details.
When you say inks do you mean washes/shades or do you mean fountain pen ink?
@@georgemarsden4226 Artists inks!
Fountain pen ink is usualy not acrylic based, but there are acrylic inks for painting. Like the ones from liquitex.
Very nice
Your brushes look shagged. Even replacement $1 synthetics would have helped...
It's an ok paint job

You should have recast them and painted those instead 😊
Please, paint the base rim black.
@@grutfrut5817 I've no idea why I would??
You can thin paints with inks? Well colour me surprised.
@@TwistedBobbay i use artists acryllic ink and acryllic paint, which works well together. Other types of ink and paint may also work, or might not.
@@EDSKaR I appreciate your minis, do you have an instagram account I can follow if you post your miniatures there?

As long as Corbec no longer looks like a hobbit when your finished
Whose dead in ths mud😢
I'm pretty sure it's a Blood Pact trooper, one of the Chaos cultist factions mentioned in the Tanith books.
Sell the model and buy some better brushes… those tips 😢
you bad
Your painting is too military, it does break up the silhouette of the body, but in game models it's not the type of effect everyone wants, usually do a paint job that highlights the features of the model and gives charisma
I know this is a collector's piece, but I feel the need to say this.
God, GW stuff is all so unbelievably overpriced. Considering the absurd, CARTOONISH prices and the fact GW has repeatedly shown they hate their fans, I exclusively buy from recasters and printers.
@@Scaevola9449 i left 40k over 20 years ago for this exact reason, I popped back in recently for my Tanith project and was shocked at just how bad its gotten, and how many people are either blind to it or activly support the abuse from GW
