    You mentioned being "creatively bankrupt". This feeling really is troublesome. Switching gear or studying inspirational photographic literature helps. At least for me. Sometimes you feel more creative than other time.

    To use those (apparently) weird dilutions with HC110 try to find some measuring cups and baby medicine syringes marked in ounces, pints and quarts. (Maybe in Canada you'd have to look in a resale shop, or the auction site.)
    1:31, for instance, is 1 ounce in 31 ounces of water to make 1 quart, about a litre. All of the HC110 dilutions work easily in Imperial units. (It's a very old developer.)

    Brilliant video, we all know the feeling of being creatively bankrupt. What helps for me is to travel a bit further and to find new areas to explore. Listening to music also helps to get the creative juices flowing again. Having said that, the EOS300 was my very first camera in 2003 which I bought from a guy who hardly used it. I used it a couple of years and eventually moved to the digital era. Fast forward to 2022 and I picked up analog photography again after buying a few analog SLR’s and now started BW developing myself as well. I have many EF lenses and that’s the biggest advantage of these fantastic plastic cameras. They serve wonderfully as travel cameras and accompanied with some decent glass they can do wonders. I found an EOS2000 a while back which I picked up cheaply but came with a decent 28-105 3,5-4,5 lens. As far as I know the EOS2000 and EOS300 were virtually the same, and soon I’ll be traveling to my home country for the summer and I’ll be getting my EOS300 out from my cupboard and looking forward to using it again. Thanks for your video!!

    My favorite Canon SLR film camera to shoot with was my Elan IIe with the battery grip. They need to be shot regularly however. The ones I have developed shutter problems and two of them the film door latch broke. You can tape the door shut but it looks pretty tacky. Get a working one and it's a dream to shoot. I had a 28-105 attached to mine, but any of the EF Lenses work on it. I have several Rebel models and I love their weight and handling with a light lens attached. Underrated in my opinion.

    Pick up a BP-200 battery grip and then you can use AA batteries. Glad the woman in front of the bus turned out, great shots!

      Yeah someone suggested that, I looked up the price on eBay and it's a bit much considering I probably only paid 5 for the camera. I'll wait for a deal or maybe i'll see one at a thrift store.
      Thanks again :)

    I just got one of these last week and have put about 2 rolls through it. I'm just dipping my toe into analog photography and happened upon the camera and a 28mm-80mm lens at a Salvation Army for 14.99! (our local photo and video store told me the camera was extremely clean for it's age)
    Do you think this is a good place for me to start and what film would you recommend I start with? For an idea of what type of shooting I'd be doing: I live in Boston so most of my time will be spent on the streets but I'll be heading to the Pacific Northwest and all that greenery tomorrow for about a week with the ol' 2000 in tow.

    Just a suggestion on mixing chemicals. You could do it the easy way and start with your empty beaker, put in the required amount of HC-110 (9.6ml) put that into the cylinder then add required distilled water to the amount your mixing. Like 9.6ml of HC-100 and then the remainder of water up to 300ml.

      Still using it?

    • @DrewArdner
      @DrewArdner 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, unfortunately not. I gave it to my brother as I had moved on to a Canon EOS 10S instead; I wanted a more robust camera. I miss some of the stuff that the Rebel 2000 had compared to the 10S though; The light meter in the 2000 is closer to a modern DSLR compared to the 10S having a +- light only in the viewfinder, and the 2000 has a dedicated DOF button whereas the 10S doesn't (but you can set the AE lock button to be the DOF button through a CF option.)
      I also have a Yashcia FX-3 for my manual film camera fix, but I've sorta moved onto a DSLR for most of my work; I only really use the Yashica for B/W film, as those chemicals are easier for me to get my hand on in Columbus OH. I started with color film, but ordering chemicals through the post is cumbersome to say the least. :P

    I found a Rebel 2000 in a yard sale a month ago for 5$. It came with the BP-200 battery pack so it lets me use AA batteries instead of CR2. I haven't shot with it yet though. I'm running a roll of film in a Canon Rebel K2 right now (was also found in a yard sale for cheap). I like it so far. Its super compact and has all the features that I need. I just keep it in my bag and pull it out when I feel like it.

    Awesome review thank you!! I recently picked one up for 5 dollars a and it's clean and works great and came with some goodies! Just dropped off my first 2 rolls today.
    Have you ever tried a long exposure of the milky way with the rebel 2000?

  • @flylooper

    Enjoyed the video, Azriel.
    I discovered a Rebel 2000 on a shelf in bedroom closet! I must have bought it years ago. I presently am shooting a Rebel t3i I didn't realize the capabilities of the camera body, so I'm going to play around with it. I'm thinking of loading it with B & W film so when I go on my little "safaris" I have a B&W capability at my side.
    One other thing. Canon has a battery pack (p/n BP-200) which takes ordinary 4 AA batteries and works just fine with them. No more having to fool with those hard-to-find CR2 batteries.
    I'm also having fun shooting with old Takumar lenses I've had for decades.

    • @AzrielKnight

      Glad you enjoyed the vid! The t3i is a solid camera.

    Today we got our Canon EOS 300 (Rebel 2000) with the 28-80mm kit lens (excellent condition), it is bigger than the digital EOS 100D but it fits nice in the hands. It came with batteries, but we will get some rechargeable ones. Hmm, the flange looks being made from plastic but it also looks "replaceable" - something for the future. First we will test the kit lens on the digital APS-C to see how it does, and second, a roll of film to see if camera has light leaks. But not so soon... Anyway, happy that we have our first Canon EOS film camera (not so pretty as Canon EOS 50e, but sure has style).

    I know this video is 7 years old now but a friend of mine gave me her rebel 2000 about 5 or 6 years ago. The 2 lenses that were with it are junk. There's 3 rolls of cheap film in the bag. I bought some batteries for it and never have tried it out. I have a 50mm lens I bought for my T6s after I got it. It may be the only lens that will work on it that I have. My T6s came with a crop lens. I bought a Tokina 11-20mm lens that might work on it. I really don't want to buy a bunch of lenses for it. I may put that 50mm on it and see if it'll work. I have a Canon AE-1 but it has that after squeal. The shutter is starting to hang up and I'm getting light leaks from it that are ruining my photos. It just needs to be oiled. Since April of of this year (2024) I have bought 4 film cameras. I also have a Minolta SRT 202, a Nikon FM2N and an F4. I never thought I would get back into shooting film. We grew up with point and shoot cameras. We bought the cheapest film. I didn't even know what ISO was for back then. It's fun shooting film and trying how to meter properly with the older cameras to get the look you want. I'm learning how to develop my own film. I've come full circle.

  • @The8TrackChap
    @The8TrackChap 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I primarily use distilled water for my final rinse before I hang my film up to dry. Otherwise you might use it up too fast.

    • @AzrielKnight
      @AzrielKnight  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      so rinse with tap water and then distilled or fix with tap water then all rinse distilled?

    • @The8TrackChap
      @The8TrackChap 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do everything with tap water, including the fixer. I do a very final rinse with distilled water and Photo Flo before hanging up my negatives to dry. It's just my attempt to avoid having impurities and contaminates on the film as it dries. This was a suggestion I learned from Ted Forbes.

    I first bought this camera when I was in the 9th grade, and now I'm a junior in college. This thing has followed me everywhere and I am just surprised how great it's held up in terms of modern functionality. I only ever bought two more lenses in addition to the kit lens, a 28-300 I found in a pawn store and the 50mm.
    This thing will forever be my favorite just because all of the memories it's captured in my life.
    Pro tip: you can by rechargable batteries and a charger for close to the same price as the regular batteries. Also, it's crazy to me that you can buy this body for $20 all day long on ebay.

    I use a Rebel G and love it. Got it from keh for like 10 USD, and it looks brand new. I also think these newer SLR work better all around, not degrading shutter speed as much.

    • @AzrielKnight
      @AzrielKnight  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed Matheus. Tech aside I went from shooting a camera made in 1978 to 2002. Is the rebel G the one with the musical self timer?

    • @matheusschottz2517
      @matheusschottz2517 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Azriel Knight, I never used the camera with the sound turned on(haha), but I went to check it, and it does a beeping sound as the timer is running, no songs though. :/

    • @spangst
      @spangst 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The G would be my choice for EOS SLR too. It does many of the same things that Azriel Knight criticizes the 2000 for though. It pulls the film out then spools it back. Counts down to 1. I also have a 2000 which I should try because I have the vertical grip for it. BTW the grip allows for AA battery use which is better than 2 CR2's

    • @matheusschottz2517
      @matheusschottz2517 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      spangst, the grip is a very good add-on to it, those cr2 are(here in Brasil) a pain in the butt to get. One doubt, can you use rechargeable batteries on it?
      I kinda like the camera pulling the whole film out of the cannister, if you have a light leak, you'll be in trouble, no matter what... (One of the sad things about shooting film)

    • @spangst
      @spangst 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The grip documentation warns against rechargeables, but don't forget that these grips came out when Nickel Cadmium was the tech. I suspect that you'd be fine with rechargeable AA's.

    I have a borrowed EOS 300N or so that I have not even pushed the first roll through. The viewfinder is so small and dim that I have trouble seeing through it. And with a kit lens with a maximum aperture of 3.5 or 4, that's not going to help. I normally use a Minolta X-700, which is absolutely the right tool for me. Bright viewfinder, all the automation I need (I mainly shoot in aperture priority) and it still works flawlessly.
    But I will have to shoot the Canon for a bit, I guess, even though it might be not as fun

    • @AzrielKnight
      @AzrielKnight  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear good things about the X-700

  • @NorceCodine
    @NorceCodine 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The BP-200 battery grip makes it a lot better to hold onto, and adds much needed weight, as the whole camera is plastic, including the lens mount:( Pictures are OK, it seems like Canon glass is rather neutral, not much color saturation, so black and white is probably the best option to use for. In comparison my Leica Mini Zoom is like a Rembrandt oil canvas, the colors are just brutally strong and contrasty. Cost also twice, back in 2007.

    I’m completely manual as well. I purchased this model SLR due to the fact that although I love using the Nikon FG-20, I’m starting to do color film developing, and wanted to just use auto modes on modern SLR’s because it feels safer using their auto modes.

    My favourite slr is my Canon 50E (an ELAN model in States), it's a semi pro camera, it's not a light weight, but it has dials on the top plate, its quite big (unlike the Rebels), it's solidly built. But I have to admit I have a collection of Rebel cameras (being number designated here in the UK, my second favourite slr being the 300V. I love the Canon eos slr range, and there's plenty of them to collect. Really enjoyed the video too, many thanks.

    I got a 2000 on craigslist a while back, and I love having it because I got a yashica/EOS adapter and I can use this camera with my yashica primes that only cost me like $25 a piece! And it's great when I'm feeling lazy and don't want to manually focus or set exposure on every shot.

    My first film camera ever was this, Rebel 2000 and from then I moved up and been through several bodies and getting to the point where I felt like the Rebel 2000 couldn't give me more from itself and I sold it for crazy bucks (modern hipsters pay lots for every film camera) and I got an Elan 7e and so far I'm just in love with it! It feels great in my hands and I find it very similar in size and weight to my digital T4i so that's quite a comfortable experience. I'm trying to minimize my camera gear as much as I need to and I think I'm making progress with that. I just have to finish the roll and develop it to see if my Elan is worth it or not:)

      @@smalltalk.productions9977 more focus points on the 7, possibly more meeting zones. Better controls and build. I started with a rebel G and liked it so much I got an EOS 7n, then later on traded my Nikon f90x for a friend's EOS 7e as I focused on just Canon, and now recently I picked up an EOS 1n for something to be extra hardy for handling more abuse.

    The EOS 650 was about my fave. Can't remember what I paid for it, on Ebay. I also had several rebels; if memory serves the G (unless it was the S) was my ergonomic fave and was much quieter than the early EOS's. Overall I think the Rebels had (and still have in the digital age) better ergonomics even if the not rebels are higher quality. For my purposes I don't really need pro or even semi pro quality. And the Rebels, both film and digital, have mostly adequate feature sets for non-pro use.

    Happy the distilled water helped. If you are going to use a Canon EOS for your film, the no-brainer pinnacle of performance/cost is the 7NE (or the 7N). I have 4 and I love them. I do use my steam-powered Leica and Mamiya 7II most of the time, and a Sony 7RII for digital, but I love my 7Ne's. You should be able to get a like-new body for under $200 and they use 123 batteries.

    Just aquired a Nikon F75 for the same reason. I wanted to shoot film with the recent G-lenses.
    Then I discovered that it did not have manual ISO settings - only by DX-code.
    Back to manual I go , he he. But I like the camera. Except for that minor detail it has everything: Matrix metering, PSAM and support for most modern Nikkors and also screw drive focus. I am into printing DX-code stickers now.
    I get 4 CR-2s for about 15 USD equiv. here (lithiums)
    For Canon SLR I found an EOS 50e for about 35 USD equiv. I use a Sigma 15-30mm and Canon's 28-135mm on that one mostly.
    The eye-focus really works.

    • @AzrielKnight

    I get the want for an auto camera once in awhile. Sometimes all manual or manual focus can be annoying. An auto can help inspire you to be more creative in your shots by not having to worry about settings or focus so much. Just let the camera be and get some good shots! I had a Canon Rebel 2000 for a few years and I enjoyed using it aside from the slow focus. It was easy to just point and shoot and get some neat shots without worrying about settings or fussing with my focus that my Minolta X700 makes me do. It served me well until I tossed it when it decided it had enough with existence and exploded in my camera bag in storage for some reason.

    I have this camera myself (canon EOS 300 in England) and like it a lot. There were a series of cameras manufactured at the same time covering the same market. Nikon, Pentax, Sigma and Minolta produced one. I have the Sigma SA7, which is great, but by far the best I think is the Minolta Dynax 5 (Maxuum 5 in Canada I think) an award winning camera, high spec and lightning fast autofocus. The size could be an issue though, it is small but still excellent. I highly recommend tracking one down.

    I have the European model of this (Canon EOS 300). It was my last film camera before I went digital in around 2005. I don't have decent glass for it, unfortunately, so mine has the standard kit 28-90mm plastic lens with max 4-5.6 aperture. Haven't shot with it for a while, so might toss a roll on HP5+ or FP4+ into it sometime soon and see how it goes. I've got loads of film bodies with half-used film in them at the moment and it's partly your fault, Azriel! You're one of the ones who reignited my love for film cameras! You've got a lot to answer for, buddy! Haha

    my favorite Canon film camera is Elan 7e I have two of them I have one with black and white film loaded in 1 camera and color film loaded in the other camera and ready to go I packed three cameras including a 5D Mark 4 digital. I like shooting both digital and film I'm sixty-eight years old and have dealt with the old cameras most of my life and they are pain in the butt as far as I'm concerned. I just want to shoot photos and not mess around with all those settings anymore unless I have to. I have 37 different cameras of different varieties mostly Canon. when it gets to the nitty-gritty the 2 Elan 7e and the 5D Mark 4 is what I shoot with :)

    My favorite Canon is the EOS Rebel XS, i think it's identical to the Rebel 2000 except that has no metering modes, only matrix, unfortunately after two years with me it suffered the problem of "Sticky Shutter" and although I clean it, the shutter works randomly and stop trusting it. I went to a FED 5 (mainly for the cost of EOS batteries) and although it is a good camera I experience a setback now I am more cowardly when taking pictures and I only dedicate myself to static objects and buildings because to focus I'm very slow. And at the time of measuring the light I am also slow because I have to use my smartphone as a lightmeter and that prevents me from dare to take photos to people either because they notice my presence or simply the moment already happened.

    • @AzrielKnight

    My go-to camera that brought me back into film photography. I used to shoot Canon digital and got my hands on one of these (EOS300 here in Europe) and thought, what the heck, let's buy a roll of film and a few batteries (they are indeed quite pricy). I am not much of a manual shooter so I appreciate the AF and the semi automatic functions of the cameras from that aera. In the meantime I collected a few other models (EOS 1000, EOS 3000) and also Minolta 505 but the EOS 300 is still my favourite.

    How weird, I've gone back to my EOS5 being my main camera again for much the same reason. I do like my Zorki 4K because a) my wife bought it for me, and b) I find I get great images with it (great as in camera and film qualities, not my photography). But sometimes I like being able to look at an accurate in camera metre, able to choose mode and use my modern glass. Fortunately my EOS5 winds on the proper way, not like my EOS1000FN the unwinds first and then winds back into the canister as I take images. Another great video, and I have forgotten about the Fuji Pro 120ns film, I will put it in the post the Tuesday.

    I prefer the EOS 3 over all other EOS cameras because of the magic of eye-focus. For me this works perfect even with just 49(?) AF-Points. But I would love to see this feature on a digital EOS :-) I also use an EOS 1000 FN occasionally. It's quite funny to use a 1000$ lens though. What also works for that stuff is a zone focus point and shoot camera like the Olympus AX or the Konica C35 that you can set to their hyperfocal point and has no mirror but just a fast click and you're done. Love doing that in the city. And it helps with being stealthy too.

    Not that I need any more cameras, but EOS Rebel 2000 (or EOS 300 as it's called here in Europe) is in my shopping list. It just somehow breathes the spirit of the late 90s with it's plastic and pale looks. I guess that's just nostalgia for me. Also it tends to be a really cheap camera.
    Since it was just aimed for the European and Asian markets, have you managed to try EOS 5000? I liked it and the results I managed to create with it. It was just fun to shoot with it on semi-automatic settings (actually it lacks the manual mode), though it strangely relies just on shutter speed priority mode.
    My favorite is probably EOS 620, though. I already know that, although I just bought it and haven't even gotten the first roll developed.

    It's always strange, weird and disappointing to hear a guy who bases his channel on film and ends every episode with "stay classic" to talk about being frustrated with film and think of giving it up over trivial stuff and things that are in fact assets in some cases.
    It makes you wonder what else is going on in your head and whether you really like film for the right reasons.
    EOS is evil. It was a totally unnecessary change of mount from the superb FD mount. Nikon manages fine with F mount still.
    Things started looking and being really crappy and plasticky, gimmicky and cheap after EOS came.
    Awesome music though!

      Azriel Knight Well, you asked. If you can't be snobbish about gear what can you be a snob about?

      I'd like to think my method is celebratory and not exclusionary.
