  • Aged 86 and visibly suffering from Parkinson’s disease, a revered Chinese pianist has been brought to a new audience via a viral video of her masterful playing.
The clip of Elaine Wu performing the classical Chinese composition “Butterfly Lovers” in late February has been reposted more than 30,000 times on the Twitter-like Sina Weibo.
Wu’s life is the stuff of legends. She began learning to play piano at the age of 6. When she was 18, her debut public performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.1 drew a rave response in the music industry. At age 23, she served as the first soloist in the China National Orchestra, and China gave her the title of National First Class Pianist in 1962, when she met with then-Premier Zhou Enlai.

Wu Yili, the first generation pianist in China, died at 89 on Saturday in Singapore. Wu, as one of the world's oldest pianists, was an icon among China's music lovers.

In the story of the Butterfly Lovers, the lovers were separated in life, much as Ms Wu was in her own life from her partner and her country. May this talented musician and wonderful woman Rest In Peace.

    Translation of ending speech:
Weiqun is my friend. Today, I am happy we can meet here because for LiangZhu. Also, i am grateful to my friend, the owner of Piano Master, who lend us the piano, which sold at over 10k price tag, for my good performance. I think we shall write a letter to him/her as appreciation because kind of this support is very touching. Liangzhu is one of my favourite piece and well known in China. Mostly, it is played in violin version, and some other version. I couldn’t find a Piano version. So, I collected some information and composed it myself. I believe there is room for improvement. Thanks, everyone.

The description mentioned Parkinson's disease. Not sure if anybody even notice. Definitely need years of playing to get to her level and many of us would not come close. Wish the video included English subtitles so we can all hear what she said after the performance.
There is a missing gap in her story. Being a musician in China in the 1950 & 60s was like a composer in the Soviet Union during the Stalin years. During the height of the Cultural Revolution anybody who didn't do back-breaking work would be labelled as "bourgeois". Millions living in cities were sent to work in farms and factories in the name of socialist ideology. This included G-R Lang, the father of the world-famous pianist Lang Lang who wanted to be a musician but was sent to work in a factory. Part of Ms. Wu's story included playing solo with national orchestras in China. Sometime in the 1950s she studied in the US and later became a US citizen? How did she manage to survive the brutal dictatorship when many in China lost their chances to become professional musicians?

I only get to know she is a contemporary of Fu Tsong today. Sadly, many of them passed on unknown, they grew up in tumultuous era under very harsh conditions. Had they been born this generation, they would have achieved much success and given the recognition deserved.
