  • This my version of an offset shallow notched short hook! There are lots of notched hook designs out there, but this is my version and I think it’s super versatile. I hope that some of you find it to be a genuinely useful addition to your pick set as it’s far from a gimmick 😃👍 Q and A in description if you are interested 😃
    Q: Isn’t this just a notched pick?
A: Yes, but I hope a very useful one!
Q: sO YoU ThiNk yOU InVeNtEd thE NoTchEd PiCk?
    A: No, no I don’t
Q: That looks like one I saw somewhere
A: Very possible. Lots of pick makers make a notched pick so it’s bound to be similar to one somewhere. I hand made the original Monkey Paw by eye to my own requirements and I have been working on this for a couple of years on and off to get the balance right. Now I hope lots of people will benefit
Disclosure: This set was sent to me for review by Sparrows Lock Picks and so under the The Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP U.K.) rules, this counts as sponsored content. Brand new to lock-picking (about 2 weeks) and just got the Monkey Paw. It’s amazing how much this pick helps me know where I am in the lock. The extra feedback of the pins setting into the notch in the pick is fantastic. Couldn’t say it’s going to help other new pickers, but it’s certainly helping me getting started single pin picking.

After going from "all the gear and no idea" to the revelation of actually succeeding to pick locks, the two bits of kit that led to success were the Lishi SC1, which taught me that I was tensioning too hard, and the Monkey's Paw, which as you say makes finding the pins and understanding the feedback an absolute breeze. The Lishi has been retired, and the Monkey's Paw is my go to pick before any others. Thank you LockNoob I was almost ready to give up the hobby.

Absolutely loving this monkey paw, was previously using a modified short hook with a shallow shelf... But this feels much more natural.
I've only been lock picking for about 3 weeks but I'm already opening 6 pin locks with all manner of nasty security pins and this pick has really got me to that stage.
The biggest learning curve for me was tension, oh my god 😂 the difference between no tension, slight tension and too much tension is so minute.

Received one for Christmas a couple weeks ago. Works very well; I originally thought the notch, not being very big, would have a tendency to slip off the pin - I was wrong! Glad it's set up as a small hook - my favorite for SPP. The geometry makes counting the pins a slightly different experience, at least for me - working from back to front, first 'bump' you feel is pin 6 (or 5, depending on the lock); two 'bumps' you're on pin 4 (or 5), two more 'bumps' is 3 (or 4)... Very intuitive once you keep in mind you have to adjust your count / orienteering to the geometry of the tip. Hopefully that made sense for everyone 😂
    Thanks for the great design!

100% agree with a notched short hook. Never tried the rounded leading edge though. I'mma make my version and give it a go. I'd go with a slightly deeper notch and a slightly taller hook. Gives you a bit more to work with on those macs violations.

I picked one up on sparrows website and just received it and a nice little care package of goodies.
First I consider myself very much a beginner in lock sports. I have successfully picked a few locks in my time. Mostly padlocks and mostly European cylinders.
I cant speak for anyone else but from my first experience using this monkey paw today I felt a significant improvement in feedback. I dunno how to describe it it just feels good in the hand and another area it shines imo is navigating the pins and gauging their positions in the lock.
It is much easier to hook under a pin and slide it out of your way to get at the one behind it thanks to its design.
If you're a beginner like me or intermediate I definitely wouldn't overlook this little number.
I dunno about anyone else but one of the trickiest things I find is figuring out which pin I'm on 😅sometimes I'm just guessing tbh.
But with this handy little pick I'm able to assess and count the pins way easier. Now it's a little difference between this and something like a short hook...but If there is one thing that I have learned from picking its small differences can have a big impact on your pick game.
I am a fan btw of your engineering skills and artwork choices on your picks. And I like sparrows as a company in general. I use a lot of their tools.
I own most of the special picks they offer the medusa, reflection, octo rake,King,Queen etc. With my favourite so far and the one that has for me proved its usefulness being the warlock....
Spent most of the day tinkering about with repinning a lock.
Got the sparrows reload kit + the sparrows recore kit.
Repinned one of the sparrows challenge locks.
It was initially 5 pinned all spool pins.
Now it's 5 pin with 3 regular pins 1 security pin and 1 mushroom pin as I was finding the 5 spools way to challenging. Pinned it to fit the green key from the reload kit if anyone is curious. A nice bitting difference and still a bit of challenge.
Learned all of this from your channel so much appreciated.
Also I'm not affiliated with sparrows just like what they do.
Have another small shipment coming from Chris dangerfield in UK so am eagerly anticipating it.
May comment from time to time to update etc...
Inner thoughts: it's only when you take apart and reassemble a lock that you gain an appreciation for its intricate inner workings and ingenuity. A lot of complexity for something that appears on the outside so simple 🤔.
Oh and any chance you could do a review on the vegas picks by sparrows....was thinking about getting a set. Please if possible. Can't find any reviews on yt yet.

You are not going to believe this but ages ago I was thinking of a similar design. It was after I used the Goso cheap pick that had a notch in it to pick Brummies Corbin. Or rather didn't pick it open. But after using the Goso pick I thought to myself "Why don't we have more picks with notches"?
Ok my design wasn't exactly the same but just notched with a taper. I just never got round to making it.
I love the idea of your pick having the raised bit as well as the slope. Clever design. I wonder if Sparrows will do these in a thinner pick too?

I think the one thing I wish was different was for it to be laser engraved like the Octo rake instead of UV imaged as that seems a little less likely to wear off, but that's probably something I should be taking up with Sparrows rather than you. In terms of the actual functional pick part of it, very excited!

Nice looking pick. Only a newcomer to picking, and probably the most difficult thing I am finding so far is getting the pick tip to stay on the selected pin. Ended up slightly flattening the top of ends of some of my picks with a fine file to make it easier to keep the pick tip in place. Adding a notch was the next experiment, and this video has justified doing that experiment and suggested how to shape it. Good timing, sir. :-)

I need to add the Monkey Paw to my next Sparrows order.
Several months ago, I emailed Sparrows with a nearly identical idea and was blown off. They probably receive unsolicited product suggestions daily. I guess I need a lock picking TH-cam channel if I want to be taken seriously. 😀 i thought this pick might be useful for single pin picking automotive wafer locks.

    • @LockNoob
      @LockNoob  3 ปีที่แล้ว

We have been working on this for a number of months, which is probably why. They DO get a lot of emails too though as you say. I wasn't a popular channel when they first picked up the Check Pins and Medusa designs....arguably I'm still not a popular channel! Basically, don't give up on a good idea

    • @Liberty4Ever
      @Liberty4Ever 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@LockNoob - I'm an engineer. I think of many ideas that someone else also thought into existence. I'm not bitter about any of it. I would never make these picks and try to sell them so I've lost nothing. All I wanted was for someone to make a pick and sell it to me, and hopefully other lock sport enthusiasts, and Sparrows is doing exactly that. I win! We all win! It's awesome! I'm very anxious to try it, and if it's like your other Sparrows collaborations, I'm sure it'll be a wonderful thing. The Monkey Paw might even have sufficient general use to squeeze it into my everyday carry kit. Thank you for your significant part in bringing this idea to fruition. That's the part that counts. My only regrets are the good ideas I've had that nobody, including me, developed into a product.
PS - Here's the email I sent to Sparrows on 26MAR20, which clearly isn't exactly the Monkey Paw, but close enough that the Monkey Paw will probably work in my proposed application:
It seems that automotive wafer locks are often similar to picking five serrated pins on the top interleaved with five serrated pins on the bottom. While Sparrows offers a minimalist set of three wafer rakes and a coffin key set that has several try-out keys, if raking and rocking don't work (as is often the case with a ten wafer lock) there is no solution for single pin picking. Why not offer a small pick set that's intended just for automotive wafer locks? I'm a complete noob so this isn't an expert recommendation. It's more of a customer request. Something similar to a Euro hook but with a rounded front and back of the tip to glide over the wafers but a groove in the top of the tip to sense the wafers and lock onto them when setting them so the pick doesn't slip would be good, maybe in short and tall sizes. Maybe add 2-4 different rakes sized for automotive wafer locks if they'd be helpful, including a Warlock profile. Whatever picks are offered need to be approximately 10mm (.4 inches) longer in the shank than the current offerings in order to reach the deepest wafer on a 10 wafer lock. The shanks would need to be slightly taller to endure the added toque from the longer pick. The picks could also be thicker than .025" because these keyways are usually fairly wide open.
If Sparrows doesn't offer a SPP pick set suitable for automotive wafer locks, I'll check to see what other companies have for picking automotive wafer locks. If I strike out there, I'll make my own. Please don't make me do that.
Love your stuff. Thanks in advance.
