A comprehensive look at the reading order of X-men in OHC and Omnibus Format part 1

- This video is more of a love letter to the X-men. Today I show off the collected editions of X-men in oversized Hardcovers and Omnibus editions. Collecting material from 1963 to 1992. I do a deep look as to what the content of the books and talk about what the reading order. I also suggest where to start reading X-men for new readers. Focusing purely on OHCs and Omnis, so keep that in mind, but I do mention where some trades fit in. I realize this video went longer than I originally intended, but that just shows how much I really love talking about X-men.

Maaaaaaaan.... thank God for your reading order videos. I have watched them several times to come back and see what I'm missing after purchasing the cheaper books. I'm pretty much screwed with the Inferno Omni and the two X-men Claremont/Jim Lee Omni's they are definitely expensive books to get. I could kick myself for passing on Inferno at $150 shipped back in October 2019. That books Damn near $400 now. Smh
Be a little more patient on those omnis from Claremont and Lee. :)
Thanks Omar! I was there collecting the comics from my newsstand from #94-168 when I was a kid and those were always the best memories of any of the monthly titles I bought. I'm also still hoping for a volume 4 omnibus to get me past #200. You really are enticing me to acquire some sort of volume that collects those two Omni's containing the Jim Lee stuff. Always enjoyed the soap-opera format of Claremont's writing of all these characters. I always liked that character-driven prose like Stephen King does with many of his protagonists.
You are absolutely right about Claremont's writing style. When I was young, that man was a God to me. I'm sure we will eventually get a Uncanny volume 4 and reprints of the Jim Lee omnis. Your post brought a smile to my face as Uncanny 168 was my first comic.
Xmen were a blast from the past for me. I seriously collected singles for Uncanny at issue #121 where Alpha Flight took on Xmen where I live. I thought it was awesome to have a setting I know about featured in a comic book. I collected up until 2000 when Andy Kubert was pencilling. I had to stop reading comic books all together because I started to take on big boy responsibilities. It kind of freaks me out that I actually read most of that material you presented. 4 years after stopping I started back up. Glad you brought up this stroll down memory lane.

I wish they’d included the extra pages added to the Classic X-Men reprints and the back-up stories. Some of the vignette stories are pretty important to Claremont’s canon. The Volume 5 omnibus is either going to be most glaring gap in the X-Men omnibuses or one of its most important additions. There’s a big chunk of important issues between Vol. 4 and Mutant Massacre, including a lot of the original X-Factor.

I checked him and no fleas just an itchy new collar with his name and phone number on it. He never wore one before so it's bugging him a little I guess. I just got uncanny xmen vol 1 a month or so ago for $36 "damaged" from IST, thanks to your video I went snooping and found vol 2 "damaged" for $37 tonight... don't know whether to say thank you or eff you... so, thank you!

i was a big Jim Lee fan as well. however, the one who really got me started reading/collecting X-Men was Marc Silvestri. you said very little about him. he did a lot for the X-Men and his art style is outstanding! i loved his run on Uncanny and even more when he left with the other guys to start Image with Cyber Force!
His outback years were my X-men years. He draws the best Wolverine so maybe I should make an artist spotlight on him.
2:58 - that time Magneto tried to basically pimp out his daughter(?) who he didn't know was his daughter to Namor.
LOL is she still considered his daughter, I thought that they were inhumans now... I hate most retcons :)

Quick question, if you had to pick would you recommend getting the Wedding of Cyclops & Phoenix OHC or the AoA Companion Omnibus? I have al the main ones besides the reprints that are coming in a few months!
I always tell people to start with the first appearance of Gambit: Uncanny X-Men #266! Awesome jumping on point. Up until #350, that usually gives people a good chunk to work with.
Another great video! I was a huge fan of the 90s cartoon. With that being said, should I start reading X-men vol 1/2 omnibus to see the most Jim Lee art?

hey Omar! just recently started watching your vids and getting into your channel! you have a ton of great content! thanks for uploading and sharing~ Got a quick question, I just recently started getting into the X-Men and got my hands on Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol 1, saw that Vol 2 and 3 are still out of print--you think there's a good chance of these getting reprinted any time soon?
First and foremost thank you so much for watching and commenting and the kind words. I absolutely think that they will reprint those books. Specially since the deal is almost done for the MCU and Fox acquisition. Unless you find them out in the wild, be patient is what I tell people. Volume 2 had two printings and volume 3 has only had one printing.

So I’ve purchased uncanny x men omnibus vol 1 and 2 and can’t find 3 and I’m tired of waiting for a reprint, I’m also REALLY wanting to read legion quest and age of apocalypse stuff, so should i continue from where i am or can i pick up with legion quest or will i be lost?(sorry for making this so long)
You will not be lost. My advice to people is always pick up whats in print. If you luck out pick up the book that's out of print but don't pay over cover, because they will be reprinted.

Forgive me if this is a tedious question, but as a relative X-Men novice whose favorite all-time X books are Remender's "Uncanny X-Force" and Spurrier's "X-Force" (X-Force vol 4), what other related arcs would you recommend for quality of storytelling (i.e. not necessarily historical importance or degree of influence)?
I do remember our conversation. :) I would strongly recommend Kyle and Yost New X-men and then their X-force book which began with Messiah Complex

Sadly probably not anymore since they should have sailed that ship years ago.
Omar, do you recommend Claremont's run for newer readers? I think Miller's Daredevil is the only 70s/80s series that I really love, but after reading and enjoying the newer X-Men runs (Morrison was my favorite), I'm interested in reading the long run that defined/introduced so many of the classic characters.
I 100% recommend it to the new readers. It is the best BEST story I have ever read. Go with Uncanny volume 1.

Wolverine will be in omnibus volume 3 right before issue 172. Skinning of Souls will be right before Wedding of Cyclops of Phoenix.

I'm so jealous right now, need to collect them all & need to read at the start now, X-men has always been my favourite comic, what got me hooked was Jim lee's art work & the cartoon of course. Also having the action figs by toy biz, the collecting cards. I was to young to get the comics but read them later on. What do you thing of all the X titles coming out at this moment? I absolutely love All New Wolverine. I think that's one of the best books out by Marvel. Woverine is my favorite character. So him coming back, I'm happy to see, but also hope it's a good story.
Yeah wolverine always been my favourite, have u started to collect the hunt for wolverine or r u waiting for it in trade. Yeah I also like all new wolverine, but she's going back to X-23. I also wonder what they be doing with old man logan, when wolverine comes back.
There looks to be a complete collection of the Hunt for Wolverine, so I may wait on that. I would be okay with Old Man Logan , Daken and Ultimate Wolverine disappearing for a while.

They don't, but I can see if they can reprint some in Omnibus format.

Hey Omar, lately I’ve been trying to complete the collection in this video(minus the original two omnibus unless they reprint them) I have mostly everything or everything on preorder and opting to get the milestones instead of hunting the OHCs, but I was wondering where new mutants and Excalibur fit into this?

TS Xtina there are a couple of trades out there in the Epic line. Mutant Genesis is probably the most popular one or the upcoming Dissolution and Rebirth. I hope that helps :)

It has parts of Omnibus volume 1 and parts of omnibus volume 2. It's really redundant and if you own those or plan on buying them, it's a skip.

So many places, but some haven't been collected. If you want his origins, you need the Rise of Apocalypse trade, if you want his first appearance you want X-factor Epic volume 1. The best of his stories are either X-factor Endgame, X-cutioner's Song or Apocalypse The Twelve.

I am 36 and have never read comics. I decided to start collecting. I am looking at Uncanny X-Men vol. 2 and it has issues 19-35 and 600. Then vol. 3 has 111-121. I guess that it ok to miss all those issues?
I have been collecting movies, games, music and books since like 03. I really have no space for them now. So I want to collect comics. I guess I have no space for those either. haha But it's something different. I have some of the Ninja Turtles that are black and white and the first four Batman omnibus sets. I have a bunch pre ordered right now. Nancy Drew Omnibus, The X-Men omnibus vol. 1, Ultimate Spider-Man, The X-Men omnibus vol. 2, The Incredible Hulk omnibus, The Thing omnibus, The Amazing Spider-Man omnibus vol. 1, Batman The Silver Age omnibus vol. 1 and Ultimate X-Men omnibus vol. 1. So, A lot. haha
When I was a kid I would watch X-Men. Gambit was always a favorite. I think I have a thing of his also.
I’m here to help. I actually did an updated reading order of X-men that might help. That volume 2 seems to be from the Bendis run of uncanny. So it all gets confusing. The IDW Ninja Turtles are phenomenal, and you should check those out.
How do I start collecting these? Are they planning to re-print some of these omnibus'? I just bought the 'Uncanny x-men vol 1', for a very good price but i saw that vol. 2 is really pricy.. Help
Volume 1 is getting a reprint in January. I'm sure volumes 2 and 3 will follown.

It's really disappointing that Fall of the Mutants and Inferno can't be bought at cover price anymore. I wish they would reprint them :/
