  • Adding a Roof mount and testing some inexpensive (maybe copy) antenna’s against a branded version.
    I purchased a Sharman NR770s antenna for £24.00 and two Nagoya NR770s (maybe copies/knockoffs) at the cost of £6.00 each and wanted to test them however I also wanted to make a roof mount for my car……
    Just for fun

    Cheers

    P.S. do not take my word for it, give it a go for yourself.

    I like these kind of test videos. They are relaxing. No stress watching you do all the work. Thumbs up.

    I love you're calm testing, Mike.

    I did this same test during the C19 lockdown. I tested 10-12 antennas off Ebay and Alibaba. All but one tested under 1.5

    Its a company car, just drill right through the roof, who cares if you take on a little water when it rains, it HARDLY EVER rains in England. All you need now is a 5Kw linear and your ready to be an American.

      I drilled a hole in the roof of my company car 30 years ago. They couldn't have cared less.

    I can vouch for that antenna Mike, working /P with a handheld this morning from Worcester, heard you /M on the Gloucester 2m repeater 5/5 to me on the input!

    Great video Mike. Not too sure I would be happy drilling the rail. As if I did it something would go wrong 😂. I have seen this done though. Nice set up. I use to use a mag mount with a cheap knock off but the mag mount didn't have a boot so now I have a rust ring on my roof. 😂73

    Just a note that people over look when mounting antenna plates on a rail. The rail is NOT grounded to the car body as the fixing mounts for the rail are screwed/bolted into plastic lugs. A mount like this should be given a good ground cable elsewhere. Caught me out a few times.

      Fortunately my rails are grounded. Test before use people.

    Mike, I think all will be revealed after 1 year outside under the UV and wet during normal use. Let's see how the copy stands up for quality ion both materials and manufacture. 73 OM

    I've seen people put a single roof bar on those rails, and mount them on that.

      yes I did look at that option. :)

    The 1-turn coil half way up is not doing anything as the two parts are not seperated by an insulating plastic piece on these cheap antennas, so the coil has no purpose except for looks. I have tested these antennas with and without the i-turn coil and got the same results...John EI2HO

      Interesting John, I didn't remove that coil to test :) thanks :)

    How does the antenna mount make contact to the roof ?, I ask because my roof rails are isolated to de car body, so I thought they were useless without any connection to the body.

    • @mike-M0MSN
      @mike-M0MSN  ปีที่แล้ว

      luckily my roof rails are grounded to the car body so all's good.

    Mike, can you explain what you meant when you said lower SWR less power out, this has confused me in the past when tuning an antenna, surely you’d expect lower SWR = more power out to antenna ? Many thanks.

    • @mike-M0MSN
      @mike-M0MSN  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you would think would you not, however that is not always the case you can get a perfect match using a L/C circuit on a 6inch nail but all the power is lost..... :)

    Really nice mate, I like this antenna and you know why. Thanks again. What do you think of those snail mounts?

      Hi Tom, Thanks mate. snail mounts?

      @M0RMY ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mike-M0MSN the type of coax mount you used is a snail mount.
