  • This video and the next few that you will see are from the prep work that was done ahead of the public lands cleanup, but I wanted to get the video of the cleanup itself out as quick as possible to show the amazing efforts put in and results gained by the volunteers who came out. So things may seem out of order for a bit, but getting the cleanup video out first was worth it. This video also looks quite a bit different because no one was available to come along and help film, and we had way to much work to do for me to do my normal style of filming by myself, so I strapped a 360 camera on and filmed it @RonPratt style!

    As x tow truck driver please stop picking up vehicles on your sling straps. One day they may rip out of the 6op of your sling and may hurt you or someone else.

    • @CaseyLaDelle
      @CaseyLaDelle  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You’re supposed to lift by the sling straps. The chains are supposed to be loose and are only there as a safety

    • @warrenprezioso3365
      @warrenprezioso3365 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CaseyLaDelle the straps were originally there to protect the old bumpers from getting damaged when being lifted and towed. Your chains are 100 times stronger than the sling belt ever will be. Your doing a gr8 job with the equipment you have. Enjoy your roll back they are a gr8 equipment when used to make your job and life easier.

    • @CaseyLaDelle
      @CaseyLaDelle  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@warrenprezioso3365 no they aren’t. You need to educate yourself on how slings are designed to be used, because you are flat out WRONG.
      The sling straps are NOT simply pieces of rubber. Actual sling belts have three steel cables inside of each one that are looped on the end around the bolt hole on each end of the belt, and the belts for this truck are rated for a working load limit of 6,600 pounds per pair. The 5/16” grade 70 chains are supposed to be a safety backup to the belts, and are rated at 9,400 pounds per pair, which is not even a 30% higher weight rating, let alone “100 times”. But all of that is irrelevant since the winch cables themselves are only rated to a working load limit of 3,750 pounds each, or 7,500 pounds when used as I have then here. But what makes that even MORE irrelevant is the fact that the back of those truck is nowhere even close to any of those ratings so this is perfectly safe and correct.

    A chest mounted 360

      Not quite Ron Pratt style since he uses a GoPro on his hard hat but still your method works in a pinch.

    • @RealJeep
      @RealJeep ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Several wrecker pros use the hard hat and chest mounted cams. The hard hat ones are better because your chest isn't always pointing where you're looking.

      The camera works for outside the truck, but not so much when you are driving. Good job removing all that trash! When do the vehicles get removed entirely from the pit?

    Not that you need confirmation, but what you explained about the weight transference on the wrecker's axles is correct. The only thing that matters is the distance between the pick point and the center of the rear axle (fulcrum point). You get an 'A' from this retired engineering professor! Enjoy your videos Casey, keep up the good work!

      Yeah, the thing people miss is that It makes a difference to the internal stresses and load paths on the truck, but the net result at the tires is dependent only on where mass is, not how it's connected.

However, I know this is well known and observed by you, but one slip up in the process could result in dangerous outcome for you. Plus, many times you are well off the beaten path and working alone. Casey, I believe most states have gone to a similar process as Oregon DMV.
    I know in my state if an item has title, salvage/junk yards are required by law to provide reasonable effort to insure they are not receiving stolen vehicles. Even apparent trash vehicles must be processed through the state’s dmv before any thing that is vin stamped can be sold. I know of a few salvage yards that have been financially (fines) closed due to selling items prior to dmv processing. I have a friend that is a retired Highway Patrol officer that did just that type of investigation prior to retiring.

    I agree, it is totally stupid having to go through that lengths process to scrap those stupid vehicles. But I bet the reason they have to go through that is because somewhere they scrapped a vehicle that someone was "going to go back for", or such and they successfully sued the Forest Service for destroying their property. It's always one jack wagon that causes trouble for everyone else. But thankfully all the hardworking volunteers coming together to clean these areas makes up for the few that don't care. I humbly thank each one of you for keeping Oregon beautiful. Thanks for taking us along. Stay safe and GOD bless

    Back in the late 1980's I knew a guy that lived in the woods on property owned by a relative. He had collected a few junk cars and was using them for parts. I added one to the collection. They were out in the trees out of sight. Several years later I got a letter about an abandoned car in a small town at least 30 miles from where I had left that car. The car was "found" at a scrap metal yard. The property where the private salvage yard was had been sold, and somebody cleaned up the mess. I always wondered how it got in to town from where I last saw it with no engine, or drivetrain. I guess they did it kinda like you guys are doing here. The letter was one of those you talk about from the Oregon DMV. I think they were different then, but I did respond that I would give up ownership. I can't remember all the details.

    I drove wreckers back in 80-90, so-cal and Boston Ma. Carried 2 jack stands on my trucks. For changing flats on the side of the freeway and setting dolly's. on the freeway 99% you pull to the front of the tow/flat, i would hook or wheel lift the easy side then fulcrum/jack stand the other end.... UP. makes for quicker, safer. i was trained by a guy that started driving wreckers in the 60's. the tricks he knew.

    I wrote to u on a previous u-tube about a fixer upper home and property that I bought and cleaned up, an continue to clean up, on the upper Klamath Lake, and next to the Williamson river. I have a neighbor who is female, very elderly, that I see walking to her mailbox with a walker. I believe she lost her husband so there is no one to help clean up her property. I myself am disabled and was barely able to continue cleaning my own property...Her property has a little beat up house, another deteriorated old mobil home trailer, sheds, old farm equipment, an old barn, bags and bags of household trash all over the property, maybe a few old cars and trucks...I'm sure it draws mice and rats. She prob does not have the ability or the money to clean the place up..She could use some help...I think the county has been on her before about cleaning the place up..She lives in the country, on Modoc point Rd, in Chiloquin, OR, just across from Day School Rd....I can just imagine how much trash, rusty metal, and other stuff that is leaking into our water table from this property...Not to mention rats...We are just next to the Upper Klamath Lake and within blocks from the Williamson river...all of the few homes out here are on water wells and it worries me what might be creeping and seeping into our water systems...If u know anyone in our area, that does what u do, that can help...please do.. Our environment is so important..Up Modoc Point Rd there is also a bird sanctuary, parks and hikers path...We need to be helpers and caretakers of the land...I have huge, beautiful Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles that come sit on my fence posts and hunt the cattle fields for mice and snakes. They are beautiful to watch and I fear they will become sick from all the garbage and junk around the area. Was just watching and started thinking….I know Ford made that chassis with a PTO you could order from the factory. Don’t know how hard it would be to find one and install one. Don’t know if it would help you but a PTO winch would be sweet. It’s an International Harvester built motor. Keep the ph of the coolant correct and it’ll last 700,000. Starter relay buy spare. But it can always be started with a screwdriver too. Right under the hood. I was able to fit a banks turbo on one. I don’t know if banks makes it for that motor anymore

    It's pretty cool that you do this kind of thing! i like that you tried the first person video, it worked out pretty good for you. I've wondered if it would be handy to have a robotic camera mount with a joystick or one that can track your movements for your videos. Maybe one of those companies should reach out to sponsor a video or two.
    Do you have any self retracting ratcheting straps that you prefer?

    As often as I drop or just flat forget to pick up things that are rust colored and lose them in the dirt, I would be SOOOOOOO tempted to paint all the chains, and gear some obnoxiously florecent color.
    I already wrap flo orange duct tape on some of my small hand tools that I keep in my truck that are for very specific uses.

    Thanks for taking care of the environment Casey. Oh wow there's a lot of vehicles been recovered, are some of those vehicles from the last time you cleaned up?? If so when do they get taken for a junk yard . How long does it take to go through the DMV process. Yep! Your right it is stupid.

    Pretty cool what you and the other volunteers do, it is a shame you have to do it so often. I was thinking (it hurt) but maybe the DMV process helps prevent abuse? Thanks for the interesting and informative video Casey. Your descriptions and explanations as you're securing the truck for towing are brilliant. Were all of the vehicles at the storage area just from this one clean up or were some from the clean up a few months ago? Also, the short clip of the media interview was great. You present really well 👍

    I don't understand why people question you on how you do things. Since you are good at what you do
